My 18 month old keeps reacting to sun lotion, we've used kids 50+ in nivea, tesco soleil, and lidl own brand but she gets a rash with each one. Don't want to buy an expensive one without doing some homework!

Tropic Factor 50 is brilliant- none of my children nor I react to it and contains no nasties, is reef safe etc. quite expensive but worth it imo.

DD has eczema and the only one that doesn’t irritate it is boots own brand, Soltan.

Green People sunscreen is the only one I’ve found that doesn’t irritate my skin or bring out my eczema. They have a range for children too.

My daughter is allergic to the sun and almost all sun creams. The issue for her is that most of them are not photostable. The way they protect your skin is by reacting to the UV light rather than blocking it. We forked out for Ultrasun for 15 years, which was amazing but expensive. One application did last all day though . We recently made the switch to Altruist, which she much prefers and is so much more cost effective. She says it feels much lighter. Good luck in your search!

La roche posay, the kids range for sure. I react with loads of them, I use this and so does DS.

We have always used Calypso sun cream for my children with sensitive skin and it’s the only one I will use on my eldest who has eczema and reacts to everything.

Heliocare gel - Spanish brand. Amazing!

Try altruist.

Frayalight · 20/06/2025 23:02

I reacted badly on my neck and chest to Altruist, burning sensation red skin with raised areas. It's now a process of elimination but my pharmacist recommended a non drowsy daily antihistamine (Fexofenadine) during the summer months. I'm now trying this and a small amount of altruist. So far I think the antihistamines are helping. Perhaps you could see a pharmacist and get some advice.

I've had reactions my entire life, hence my neck is really crinkly as I was never able to put anything in my neck or chest, and this was only with SPF's of 6/12/15 way back when.

Prickly heat was insane... Literally covered with red rash and bumps. Everyone used to say, oooohhh you are burnt, no, that's actually rash......

Anyhoo, kids came along, and they are the same, and we found Amber Solaire the family fav. The bog standard SPF30 lotion. I know it's not got all the ultra stars, but maybe that's why none of us react to it.

Ultrasun also brilliant, but expensive.

Less sensitive older DD now uses Piz Buin Sensitive and she says that's also been fine.

We were exactly the same with our son, tried every suncream going and they all brought him out in terrible eczema. The only thing we found that didn't was SunSense, by an Australian company but you can buy it on Amazon. He still uses it 10+ years on!

Piz buin allergy used here

Slight update, I had to pick my daughter up from the our childminder on Friday as she thought she might have chickenpox. When I saw her though it was very much like heatrash which she tends to get, and its not developed like chickenpox. I know the childminder uses boots soltan sensitive but I'm not sure if she had put any on before the spots came up or not, I will double check next week. Anyone else's get heat rash?

We all get heat and sun rash. As noted above, everyone used to say..... You're burnt. No it's heat rash. Or prickly heat. Heat rash tends to be just a red patchy rash, or often a cluster of red marks, and often a long clothes seams or patterns, almost like a blood bruise. Prickly heat from the sun reacting with the sun cream comes with additional bumps and painful prickles.
