Vaginal pain in 5 year old at night only

My daughter for the past 6 months or so has complained of pain in her vagina at night. It comes in phases and we’ve been to the doctors twice - no infection.
We’ve treated for threadeorm even though pretty sure it isn’t that, it hasn’t helped anyway.
She only wears nighties to sleep in.
She had baking soda baths but now just has plain water, no soap/bubbles.
We wash hair in the shower so the shampoo is gonna fast.
She screams the house down, beside herself crying saying it hurts. The doctor helpfully told us “girls just have pain down there sometimes”.
she has a prescription cream that we use when it flares up but not to use all the time.
she has an ice pack on her vulva which seems to help but also there’s no visible swelling/redness etc.
If anyone has any advice or any idea what it could actually be please let me know!

How many times have you treated for threadworms? My DDs had this and every time it was worms. They didn't have any symptoms other than the pain in the vagina.

Lougle · 19/05/2025 21:47

It's almost always worms.

Birdh0use · 19/05/2025 21:48

Worms

Orangemintcream · 19/05/2025 21:48

Have you also treated for thrush ?

Moominmama0 · 19/05/2025 21:48

My first thought was worms.

Blondebrownorred · 19/05/2025 21:49

My immediate thoughts was worms.

SuffolkBargeWoman · 19/05/2025 21:50

Worms.
No symptoms except the pain, we had to treat repeatedly.

Catlady724 · 19/05/2025 21:50

My dd had this and treating properly for worms did solve it. I never saw any evidence of worms but I think it probably was this. Your dd may be getting reinfected regularly as it’s passed round at school easily. I would treat with Ovex and monitor closely.

The fact that it is at night really does point to worms - that's when the little buggers come out to play!

And no, girls do not "just have pain down there sometimes” for no reason!

CountryQueen · 19/05/2025 21:50

Worms. Treat her again and make sure she’s handwashing properly

My daughter had this, I noticed a pattern where it was worse after swimming lessons.
Dr prescribed thrush cream for immediate relief, and emoliant in lieu of soap for the shower/bath.

Swim free weeks it does not happen so we think its sensitivity to the chemicals.

tsmainsqueeze · 19/05/2025 21:53

Worms from me too.
My daughter had them quite a few times she had the same symptoms at night .
I never missed the follow on dose of ovex and would sometimes give a 3rd dose 2 weeks after the 2nd one.

Another vote for worms. If you treat on Monday, by Tuesday they can be reinfected. The medication is reactive not proactive.

Rockfordpeach · 19/05/2025 21:55

Not to pile on but i agree with worms. My daughter used to get really bad vaginal pains at night and treated for worms a few times until it went. No other signs

Mountainfrog · 19/05/2025 21:56

(cancel the cheque) worms

BellesAndGraces · 19/05/2025 21:57

Fact it’s at night makes me also think it’s worms. MN advice I got here that actually worked when my daughter was screaming bloodcurdling screams in the night was to wipe her anus with a wet cotton pad and then rub a thick layer of Vaseline on her anus. Do this before bed and during any night wake ups as apparently worms secrete a liquid that stings and the Vaseline provides a skin and they can’t move very well in Vaseline.

tsmainsqueeze · 19/05/2025 21:59

I know this is awful and intrusive but have you looked at her anus at night when she has the pain , i did and you could see the little bastards squirming around, truly horrific.
Vaseline acts as a type of barrier to stop them moving around as much.

tsmainsqueeze · 19/05/2025 22:00

Sorry, i see someone else suggested this,

Attendreetesperer · 19/05/2025 23:00

Not to hijack. But I don’t have children. And after every bath at night I have vaginal pain but I’m not itchy. It just stings and burns. Thrush or worms?

Superscientist · 20/05/2025 10:47

My daughter gets vulvitis which causes her pain at night. My GP said it's quite common in young girls as they don't always clean themselves properly after wees. We keep a close eye on it now and it doesn't cause her the same discomfort it did before she was diagnosed.
Ibuprofen in the night helped with the pain and bathing the area with some warm water and cotton wool

My daughter 6 going on 7 is exactly the same. Im taking her the doctors on Tuesday as we had a bad night last night one of the worst we have experienced. This is probably the 7th time its happened but last night was horrendous, 1am and I had her in a warm bath.
I have changed so much to try and help 0% perfume washing powder, bamboo non fragrance natural toilet paper, barrier creams, change in diet as the first time we approached the doctor with it, it was just the same as some other people have said "Some girls are more sensitive down there". Im at my whits end with it because I feel so helpless. So im taking her back in the week and demanding they look into it further as they have never said about worms to me but I am wondering if it could be that as I have tried so much to help stop it happening.

Is the pain mostly after she is asleep, maybe 11pm-1am? This is peak worm time in my experience as it's when they come out to lay their eggs. I would give her an Ovex tablet (or Boots do their own one) and treat the rest of the family. It won't do any harm to have a dose. She will need a follow-up dose in two weeks.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 03/08/2025 12:24

It'll be worms.

We had to treat my daughter over and over and over again.
