I always thought y shouldn’t eat than go for a run because it can lead to digestive issues
in schools they always eat first and then go for a run

Well no harm has ever come to my child from eating and then being active and she's done it many times over the years

DUsername · 19/04/2025 16:02

Depends what they've eaten. A bucket load of food might make them feel sick/be sick or get a stitch. A small snack will be the perfect fuel.

CarpetKnees · 19/04/2025 16:21

If I've read your post right, you mean doing what all children do - playing outside after their school dinner ?
In which case there is no problem.

If you were talking about Olympic level track or road events, then sitting down for a big 3 course meal immediately before probably isn't going to get you the best race of you life, no. But the two situations are so far apart, they aren't really comparable.

WhatMe123 · 19/04/2025 16:30

Not sure about your kids but mine eat so little at school I'd doubt it would make and difference 🙈

CurlewKate · 19/04/2025 16:33

In my experience-and the no swimming for an hour after eating is to give the parents a break!

Octavia64 · 19/04/2025 16:36

Many athletes do carb loading where they do exactly that.

my mum always said no swimming or running after a meal but I think she was wrong.

sunshineandshowers40 · 19/04/2025 16:41

They really don't eat much at school, I'm not sure this is a serious post.

Crazymumse · 19/04/2025 16:52

My son take packed lunch and usually it’s full so worried this will lead to digestive issues! Like reflux 😢

Absolutely fine to exercise after eating. We should all do it.

Newmeagain · 19/04/2025 16:59

Reflux?? No OP - unless he is running a marathon, it’s good to get light exercise after eating. Isn’t that what children have done for thousands of years?

Thelondonone · 19/04/2025 17:02

If your kids packed lunch is going to give them reflux, I think you need to take a long hard look at what you are giving.

Topseyt123 · 19/04/2025 17:03

There's nothing wrong with running about after eating. It's a packed lunch he had for school, not a huge three course meal.

My parents used to say no swimming for an hour after eating lunch when we were on holiday, but I don't eat massive lunches and think they were wrong. It's one of the numerous "rules" of my upbringing that I have ignored as an adult.😃

Crazymumse · 19/04/2025 17:07

These lunches he takes and he is 6 years old
it seems like I do everything wrong 😩

His lunches are fine. It is also fine for him to run about after his lunch. He will come to no harm at all.

SummerInSun · 19/04/2025 17:15

Totally weird idea, where on earth did you pick it up from?!? Most schools have lunch followed by break in the playground, don’t they? And kids just running around a bit isn’t hard core exercise requiring the advice of a sports nutritionist. As PP have said, if you are an adult about to do a triathalon or a marathon you are advised to eat eg a banana, crackers and peanut butter, protein bar, beforehand and to refuel mid event.

All that said, personally I prefer to exercise on an empty stomach and occasionally if I have breakfast first and then go really hard core I can feel slightly nauseous, but if so I just slow down slightly and it instantly passes.

Truly, OP, I wouldn’t lose a moment’s sleep over this.

AnnoyedByAlfieBear · 19/04/2025 17:15

I work lunchtimes in a primary school. That’s a normal sized packed lunch. If he’s feeling full, he won’t run about and will play more sedate games. I’ve never known a child to get ill from playing at lunchtime after eating (unless there’s already an underlying issue).

jonahpops · 19/04/2025 17:16

Are you thinking of eating and then swimming?

Crazymumse · 19/04/2025 17:22

He started clearning throat and two days ago something came to his throat and he never had history of reflux so obv I am doing something wrong. I am thinking this can be the cause, eating then running. Also today he ate and then Went garden to play with his brother and running and he looked like he was clearing throat ! I’m doing something wrong to him.

doodleschnoodle · 19/04/2025 17:35

You sound very anxious, OP. Kids are forever eating and then exercising, it’s totally normal. Are you okay?

Crazymumse · 19/04/2025 17:41

No I am not ok. I give him water in empty stomach I find out that can cause reflux
I follow doctor advise and give him 1.5l-2l water and that make him just burp and sick.
I reduce water he get constipated and withhold. I use laxative movicol he goes and then goes too soft and I reduce and he get constipated again.
I thought since he suffer from chronic constipation, going to the park after lunch should help his bm and now he seems he is developing reflux which is worst than constipation. I think I am failing in everything's and making it worst for him

I think you are just fretting over everything and there is no need at all.

Also, I highly doubt that a 6 year old needs 2 litres of water per day, and I would never have been able to get that much into mine when they were that age. I'm not surprised it made him burp and puke. It's far too much for a child that size. Maybe half that, and that would be pushing it.

Stop worrying. He seems to be eating fine. Let him run about if he wants to. He'll drink when he needs to. Just offer it regularly, but don't push and make a big song and dance over it. If you notice him getting constipated then give a dose of movicol but maybe not every day.

No, they don’t.

carb loading would be done days before an event to maximize glycogen stores. It wouldn’t be done immediately before.

you eat light before training.

Carb loading is not done right before the endurance event.
