Daughter age 9 spotting blood

summer90x · 30/03/2025 20:58

Hello!

Just came on here as today my daughter age 9 has been spotting bright red blood in knickers and pjs.

would this be spotting due to hormones? If this was her period starting (if I remember correctly years and years ago 🫣) it would come on very heavy with lots of blood like the beginning of period when coming on. I am really hoping it’s just spotting as I have heard this can happen year or 2 after spotting as she’s so young 🙁

I will obviously check how things are tomorrow and il find out I am sure. Just wanted some advice on it as I’m sitting here thinking and thinking!

she’s got a sanitary towel in right now xx

My first period was very light, my daughters too. That seems more common that a first heavy period. Does your dd have other obvious signs of puberty ?

Miffsmum · 30/03/2025 21:10

My periods started age 9 😱. I was an early developer and now post menopause but I remember my first period was pretty light.

summer90x · 30/03/2025 21:11

Oh really ok then thank you! Yes she does, her boobs have come and also she has pubic hair (doesn’t get dressed in front of me anymore!) bless her. It’s so young to start! Xx

@MiffsmumOh was you! It’s so young, she’s nearly 10 but I remember being 13 when I started so was quite a shock! Il see how things go for her, will it be a normal heavy one on the next one next month? Il be sure to tell her teacher and pack lots of towels for her xx

I remember it being quite a scary time as I had a basic knowledge but no real understanding, if you see what I mean.
I hope it is much better for your DD

summer90x · 30/03/2025 21:18

@Miffsmum oh me too!! I only have basic information- I am going to actually read up online about it all so I can explain better and give more advice on everything! I just didn’t expect things to come this early! Xx

I really can’t remember although I do remember really heavy periods while at school and I was always worried everyone could smell it-I could
Funny, but I remember that happening so clearly and I’m 59 now!

summer90x · 30/03/2025 21:21

@Miffsmumi know I’m 35 now and I honestly cannot remember that far back! I remember my first one though and being in toilet at school and really panicking and being worried! Im glad this didn’t start at school for her! Xx

I started my period when I had just turned 10. I think mine were regular from my very first one (long time ago so can’t remember exactly!) but it’s very common for them to be irregular for months, if not years. Light spotting is normal.

You sound like a lovely, caring Mum. Smile

TeaIsNice · 30/03/2025 21:22

My teen got her first period aged 10. Early, but not uncommon.

summer90x · 30/03/2025 21:24

@WetBanditsAhh thank you ♥️ I’m just panicked I haven’t explained things ok and would hate her to be worried and scared! So trying to reassure her as much as possible!

Ok looks very common for this age then, she’s 10 in June bless her. Just seemed so young as I thought when I started was young at 13!

thank you so much tho everyone xxxx

If she is a reader get her The Period Book: a girls guide to growing up. My dd started early and for the first couple of years would pull this book off the shelf in her room as she got her head round everything.
I also recommend period pants, the primark ones work just as well as the more expensive ones. My dd is a teen now and puts a pair on in the morning, changes after school and before bed. No worrying about having to use the high school bathrooms.

Sassybooklover · 30/03/2025 21:51

You will find the toilets at school for the upper primary/,junior schools have sanitary bins in them nowadays. It's not uncommon for girls to start their periods at 9/10 years old. Normally schools do keep a supply of sanitary towels, as well. By the sounds of it, your daughter has started puberty, and I believe the body has to get to a certain weight before the hormones are kick started to induce periods. Make sure you tell her teacher, and keep sanitary wear in her bag. Make a note on your calendar, so you can keep a track of her periods! She may be irregular to start with, I know I was. I started at 12 though.

Jollyjoy · 30/03/2025 21:53

Milli Hill’s period book is another good one op, my DD is 9 and I’ve left that with her. She recommends getting a nice box together with period pants, pads, all the san pro options you think may suit for her to try, plus a few nice treats like chocolate and bath stuff. I started one for my DD for when the time comes as I think I would have absolutely loved that.

MissHollysDolly · 30/03/2025 21:53

If she’s 9 she needs to go to the doctors now. She might need hormones for precocious puberty

Applesandpears23 · 30/03/2025 21:54

My first period was so light my mother didn’t believe it was really a period but exactly 28 days later I had a proper one so it became obvious the spotting was my first one.

One look at the NHS website will tell you that’s blatantly untrue.

WhatMe123 · 30/03/2025 22:28

Mine started as quite light like spotting op

ByGoldDreamer · 30/03/2025 22:42

99.9% likely to be period but just double check with her she hasn’t had anything worrying happen to her .

thismummydrinksgin · 30/03/2025 22:45

Period pants and period swimwear are great for young starters, lots of options out there x

Sourwitch · 30/03/2025 22:47

My niece started at 9 and it was suggested it was due to her being very overweight. Her mother is a large lady and I think it must be somewhat genetic as her younger sister is very slim. Not saying your DC is overweight OP but there are factors which can affect it.

Thank you so so much everyone for your helpful comments. Really made me feel at ease! I was a bit worried last night! Also what a lovely idea to get a box together for her - I will purchase that book!
today as come around and she has 0 blood at all!? So strange! I think I am going to call doctors and just check that’s normal and maybe it will come along soon as maybe her body is getting ready? It’s all very confusing! I am going to pack towels for her in school bag just incase anyway xxxx

@summer90x period pants are good for younger ones as there's no messing with pads etc. You can get starter kits with different flow pants in them. Loads of options on the internet 😁

summer90x · 31/03/2025 21:03

@WhatMe123yes i saw these, someone on here said about they. Do them in primark! So do they leave them on all day and not change them? Until the evening? And do we chuck them after or wash them? Sorry new to these pants! But such a good idea. She hasn’t bled anymore so I’m wondering if it’s just her body getting ready for it xx
