Ever seen a rash like this!? (Child)

My 11 year old son has developed this rash on his chin. It isn't itchy or raised. I've never seen anything like it!
At first I thought it was due from some sweets he had after school, but it's now got worse and clearly isn't washing away!

Any ideas?

Does it fade under a glass ?

Panda8383 · 10/03/2025 23:30

Has he vomited?

fortheloveofbooksandchocolate · 10/03/2025 23:34

@Dodgyshoulder it doesn't fade under a glass

@Panda8383 no, he's not vomitted

This might sound silly, but has he maybe created suction on a glass around his mouth, i.e. put a glass over his mouth and sucked the air out so it would stick without holding on? Silly stuff kids do. That could cause some light bruising like this.
Or maybe rested his chin onto something firm/hard?
If he is well in himself and has no other areas with this rash/bruising, I would think it's probably a mechanical cause like the ones I suggested.

Dodgyshoulder · 10/03/2025 23:43

Has he been itching the area? I get these rashes come up when I have a bug bite or something and I itch really hard. Is he well otherwise ?

Agree with this. My DS was about 9 when I was getting his PJ’s on him
(he has SEN) and I noticed a similar rash between his knees so was panicking. Turned out he’d been scratching an itch there for several hours before and had bust some tiny blood vessels.

POSTC123 · 10/03/2025 23:49

I’m going with plain old acne. Or if you stimulate it by rubbing over it gently does it get redder and raise slightly?

If so maybe immune cells on the surface. I have them in a patch on my stomach. Very rarely triggered (ie. Not every illness) but it’s odd when they do.

Pinkandcake · 10/03/2025 23:51

Definitely keep an eye on it OP to see it if spreads because that’s what a meningitis rash would look like, that’s why a PP was asking if it disappeared with a glass, however, it can have other causes, like the reasons in the above posts. It’s mostly likely something straightforward but keep and eye on it and see if it spreads.

POSTC123 · 10/03/2025 23:51

Oh it doesn’t fade!

Scratch that response above I completely misread. You need to go to an and e do you not?

Non fading rashes are potentially meningitis!

rivalsbinge · 10/03/2025 23:53

Looks like teenage acne to me with large pores.

Completely depends on how the cold is.

farmlife2 · 11/03/2025 00:02

Has he sucked a glass in against his face? Or container? I have seen that before, although it looked more bruisy than that.

fortheloveofbooksandchocolate · 11/03/2025 00:02

Thanks all for the ideas. He can't recall doing anything to his chin, although the cup suction does sound like something he'd do!!
He doesn't feel unwell, no fever or anything like that, just tired and wants me to stop bugging him lol.

Wouldn't he feel poorly with meningitis??

It's really strange how it came about, his face was clear when he went off to school this morning, then when he got home he had this rash, but only slightly on the sides of his chin, and now his whole chin is almost covered.
I wonder if something happened at school or the park that he's forgetting about (adhd brain!). But I doubt I'll sleep tonight now worrying😅

Has he had a go at shaving? Not that he has any facial hair, but boys do that sometimes, and it could be barber’s rash.

coxesorangepippin · 11/03/2025 00:29

Has he been snogging???

rivalsbinge · 11/03/2025 06:35

Snogging and shaving.. brilliant suggestions. Can you image your first snogging session and mum taking you to a&e.

Op let us know how he is? Assuming it's gone down, my understanding is that meningitis would be a body rash and feel generally unwell, rather than an isolated face rash.

Sassybooklover · 11/03/2025 07:31

As someone who has had bacterial meningitis and septicemia, I can tell you that your son would feel very very poorly. If he has no cold, temperature, no sickness/diarrhoea, no cough, no aches/pains, dislike of bright lights etc, then no it's not meningitis. The rash usually appears on the lower body (sometimes on the trunk) (sometimes there is no rash), and it can be the last symptom to appear. Yes, a person can contracted viral meningitis, rather than bacterial but again, your son would feel unwell.

Sassybooklover · 11/03/2025 07:50

It looks like he's scratched himself and it's caused a Petechiae type rash on his chin. Often mistaken for a septicemic type rash, as they look similar.

fortheloveofbooksandchocolate · 11/03/2025 09:20

He was horrified at the idea of snogging, so I can safely rule that out😂

Today he has a sore swollen throat along with the rash, and a bit of a headache & tummy ache (still no fever). I have kept him off school and got a GP appointment for 10AM.
Thanks for all your messages

Definitely the right call to take him in. I hope he feels better soon.

Panda8383 · 11/03/2025 10:21

How did your son get on at the docs 🥰

fortheloveofbooksandchocolate · 11/03/2025 10:46

He's got a viral infection... prescribed rest and fluids, no major concern. Phew!!

Thanks for all the messages🤩
