Hi
Need some advice
My DS7 has come down with diarrhea and fever since yesterday (Sat) afternoon.
He has bad tummy pains also. And fever ranging between 38C to 39C and is quite lethargic and clingy. Not eating much and really have to plead him to have sips of water.
He's got diarrhea before also but never accompanied by fever. I called NHS 111 who has given me a appointment with the pharmacy for tomorrow.
We are in London does anyone who any bug going around now. He has been to his swim class on Friday evening and no outside meal.
Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks

There are sooo many bugs going around. As long as he's having some water and his temp shifts with nurofen I wouldn't be too worried as it's only just 24 hours.

Classee · 16/02/2025 15:34

My son had these symptoms with appendicitis. Is he finding it difficult to walk because of the pain?

Camlinmagic · 16/02/2025 17:34

Thanks for your replies

@Springadorable so the NHS 111 advisor said not to give Nurofen/ Ibuprofen just Calpol...
@Classee Hopefully your son has recovered and better now. My son is not complaining of pain while walking but definitely lethargic and mostly has been downstairs lying on the sofa all day today. I did check if the pain was right side but it seems it's all around the lower tummy - belly button and below.

I know someone who's child had these symptoms and it was campylabactor food poisoning. I don't think they needed any specific treatment though

Camlinmagic · 20/02/2025 11:48

@Midnightlove how did they test to know this like stool test or blood test

May09Bump · 20/02/2025 11:55

How many days has he not been able to keep water down - my son got admitted via A&E for dehydration for a virus. Call 111 again and tell them he's not keeping water down, lethargic, etc and days of symptoms.

Camlinmagic · 20/02/2025 12:07

@May09Bump no water down from this morning. Yesterday was better no poo or vomit for the entire day. Now again started today morning... I called our GP they have asked to come later this evening to check him. I have giving him sips of dioralyte now...
Do you know anything about campylabactor infection ?

Do you have a dog by any chance? Our dog had that and we were advised to wash our hands carefully as we could catch it from her.

Camlinmagic · 20/02/2025 12:35

@JSMill No pets at home. Last Friday was school and later evening swim class and home cooked dinner. This all started on Saturday afternoon and today's Thursday.... My DS looks so weak and low on energy and the telly isn't helping to perk him up

OP posts:
HopelesslyOptimistic · 20/02/2025 12:53

Food poisoning. Is your child at nursery?

JSMill · 20/02/2025 13:14

It can still be food poisoning even if it's a home cooked dinner unfortunately. My ds once was ill with very similar symptoms as yours after eating at MIL's. My dad is a former environmental health officer and was adamant it was food poisoning, although MIL wouldn't have it. He eventually got better on his own but he was 18 so obviously stronger and with better immunity.
There's a definite possibility your ds has picked something up in the pool.
I am glad he's going to be seen by a GP. It doesn't sound like this is going to clear up on its own.
Hope your ds will feel better soon.

Camlinmagic · 20/02/2025 13:23

@HopelesslyOptimistic DS is 7 in year 2

@JSMill as he's off food totally and loosing so much fluid he is all weak and his immune system isn't great as just the week before this he has cold and cough so didn't really get enough time to recover and hit by this. Let's see what the GP says will definitely check on campylabactor/ food poisoning. Did your son need antibiotics then ?

OP posts:
JSMill · 20/02/2025 13:43

Yes I'm pretty sure he got antibiotics. It was 2017 so my memory isn't crystal clear. I do remember how poorly he was. He still brings it up actually.

I'm not sure but it it was through the doctors

Midnightlove · 20/02/2025 14:50

Ah I didn't know he was vomiting too, campylabactor is mainly lots of diarrhoea and fever

Camlinmagic · 20/02/2025 15:09

Will be at the GP in an hour will update then. But just read on BBC that Norovirus cases have reached the highest record ever. I think it's most likely this bug my sons caught but what concerns me is that it doesn't take this long for it to get out from your system. But anyways off to the GP.... I did check with the reception about us going there but they said they would isolate us if needed and that the Dr may want to feel his tummy and general parameters for accessing.

I saw norovirus is still rife earlier 🤢 it does normal clear with in a couple of days though.. has anyone else been ill? Norovirus is highly contagious

Camlinmagic · 20/02/2025 18:36

Back from the Drs....GP said it still looks like Norovirus and agreed it's taking longer... Also the Dr said ds is clinically dehydrated and to up his fluid in take

OP posts:
ImDoneOnceAndForAll · 20/02/2025 18:40

Up his fluid intake?

But his vomiting after every drink of water?

JSMill · 20/02/2025 18:48

Have you tried flat lemonade? I used to work at a school in the Middle East and our school nurse swore by that for tummy bugs. We used to make fun of her because she trotted that advice out so often but when I had my own children, I saw that it worked. The kids are tempted to drink by the taste and the sugar gives them a bit of energy.
Hope your ds feels better soon xx

Camlinmagic · 20/02/2025 21:53

@JSMill thanks for that will definitely try that anything that helps really......
@Midnightlove no one else ill at home

I am not saying the GP is wrong. But just keep an open mind, I would have thought by now another member of the family would have caught it!

user1471538275 · 20/02/2025 22:13

Problem is with flat lemonade - most fizzy drinks are now sugar free so it doesn't work in the same way and sweeteners can make things worse.

OP - it's a bit late now to try this , but you could if he's still vomiting all fluids in the morning.

You can use water or diarolyte. You can try dilute squash but most are sugar free these days.

1st hour 5mls fluid - 1 teaspoon or 5ml syringe every 5 minutes - no more than this. It's enough to be absorbed by the mouth's mucous membranes but should not trigger a vomiting reflex.

2nd hr 10mls fluid - every 5 minutes again.

3rd hr 20mls fluid - you can go down to every 10 minutes at this point

If he vomits, go back a step. Once you've gone past 3hrs with no vomiting, let him drink when he feels thirsty.

Write down when he pees, even if it's a small amount.

In terms of food - leave it until the vomiting has stopped.

If it's just diarrhoea then he can eat whatever he wants. I wouldn't push him - it's best to follow his lead, if he's hungry it's worth trying something.

This has good advice for what to watch out for.

I certainly would have as well!
