Molluscum

Hi! Waiting to get a call back from the doctors. But for anyone who has expressed molluscum. Does this look like it? I noticed a small spot on my son's back about 2-3 months ago and thought it was a skin tag! But I said I would keep an eye on it.

Looked the other day again and now he has 4. How can I stop this getting any worse if it is it? I would rather stop it in its tracks now before it spreads. He's not bothered by it and doesn't realise it's there.

Yes it does look like it.
we used Molludab and it went away very quickly.

wandawaves · 17/01/2025 08:53

Oh no, yes it looks like it. Nothing worked on DS's and they spread like wildfire and persisted for 2 years. We ended up having to get the dermatologist to freeze them off.

Fawn68 · 17/01/2025 08:56

Oh crap! This is my worst nightmare 😭😭 I'm scared to use anything to treat them incase I make it spread because there are so little! I don't know what to do.

Just use molludab on the individual spots. The sooner you treat, the less likely they are to spread.
Be cautious with towels, bedding etc.
My kid had them for a couple of years until I tried Molludab which someone on MN recommended and they cleared up very quickly.

MikeRafone · 17/01/2025 09:09

My dad had these and they just eventually went away, she had quite a few and in areas that could be seen. Nothing was prescribed for them by gp

Muchtoomuchtodo · 17/01/2025 09:12

Looks like it to me. DS had them in his armpit. Nothing seemed to get rid of them until one got really red and angry and finally burst. Then the others all disappeared too. He’d had them for several months.

loveev · 17/01/2025 09:20

My daughter had this for a year , tried all sorts . The only thing that worked for us was tea tree oil cream , applied twice a day. Went within a couple of weeks .

Fawn68 · 17/01/2025 09:47

Thanks everyone!

I have to take him to the doctors this afternoon and once he confirms I think I would like to treat, as he only has 4 of them.

@loveev when you used the tea tree oil did you then have to cover each spot? My absolute fear is them bursting and then spreading everywhere! I have 2 other kids too.

My daughter had lots and lots of them , I covered them all with tea tree cream , they did burst but that was the first sign of them going away . They have left scars unfortunately, she was 3 when she had them and now 13 and you can barely see the scars . My son did get them , but I used the cream and immediately and he didn't get as many or scar .

Fawn68 · 17/01/2025 09:58

@loveev thankfully they are on his back so I don't mind too much about the scarring! I just want them gone at this stage. They are quite small, and they look larger in those photos. Did you have any spreading once they burst? What tea tree cream did you use? Can I just use straight tea tree oil on them?

From what I can remember I don't think they spread once I used the cream . I think I just got it from Boots or Holland and Barrett. I don't know about the oil , as I used the cream .

Muchtoomuchtodo · 17/01/2025 10:13

Essential oils need diluting. They shouldn’t be applied neat to the skin.

yeshimabet · 17/01/2025 11:26

Mullusab works! But the applicator is a pain, I used a fine paintbrush and dabbed on a tiny, tiny amount on the spots. They dry up and go, dot it morning and evening. More do pop up but you can get them early so it works.

Outlookcloudy · 17/01/2025 11:31

My daughter had them quite badly. We went to a dermatologist who prescribed crytacide cream to stop them spreading. To get rid of them we used molludab per the instructions and crystacide cream over the area plus clean sheets and pjs each evening. It was a complete pain but really worth it, probably took around 4 weeks for them to go.

mewkins · 17/01/2025 11:35

My son had lots at one point and molludab works really well and quickly. The doctor may tell you that it doesn't work (it's not available on the NHS as too expensive) but it does.

Fawn68 · 17/01/2025 17:08

The doctor confirmed it is molluscum and has prescribed molludab! I'm really really hoping this works and that it doesn't spread the spots

GP won’t do anything.

we tried everything including molludab and nothing worked. They went away on their own.

DD took 4 months
DS took 18 months

neither was at all bothered by it

TeddyBeans · 17/01/2025 17:27

I found molludab to be a bit traumatising for DS when he had molluscum. Tea tree had the same sort of effect but what really whacked it out was my son catch HF&M and triggering his immune system. Molluscum sits on the skin and their immune system doesn't realise it's there for ages

Fawn68 · 19/01/2025 21:50

So far my son is tolerating the molludab. We are on day 2 of it and one is starting to turn red! But my god it is so hard to get any liquid onto the spatula of the molludab.

Im ensuring he has new pjs every night and will change his bedding every 2-3 days!

Does anyone know if I cover the spots with a plaster once inflamed incase they pop? And also once red how long until the spots disappeared for you? I'm am praying my other 2 kids do not get this but I know how contagious it is.

SweepTheHalls · 19/01/2025 21:52

Tea tree and lavender oil baths cleared up my daughters spots. Honestly, it really worked.

StuffedFullOfFromage · 19/01/2025 21:53

Kindly, I think you need to chill OP.

It's a very very common childhood condition, it'll go away eventually but may (or may not) take ages.

Obsessing about others catching it and clean PJs etc is not going to help it on its way.

You just need to wait

FrogsLoveRain · 19/01/2025 21:54

My son had this. Seemed to last forever. Advice I had, which we did, was to find the biggest one you can see - the queen - and squeeze the ball out of it. This should encourage the immune system to recognise them and then they'll all disappear.

FrogsLoveRain · 19/01/2025 21:55

Apparently v contagious but no one else in the family contracted them.

wandawaves · 20/01/2025 01:26

No one else in my household caught it from DS either. And they shared everything all the time. Hopefully this is the case for you too OP.

Fawn68 · 20/01/2025 11:31

Thanks everyone 😀
