My child while he was breastfeeding he was healthy. He had eczema but was healthy from age 0-2 years old. After 2 years old stuff started going south when we introduced cows milk. He developed diarrhoe and then chronic constipation. Now he is in milk alternative and have severe stomachache, looks pale and we just find out his calprotectin is slightly high ( they will repeat it in 2 weeks to make sure it’s due to infection and not bowel disease) . He suffered so much from when he was 2 years old till now ( hospital admission for Klean prep, movicol disimpaction and now he has severe stomach cramp). His belly cramps when he goes for a poop and he is not constipated anymore so we stopped movicol. But since we introduced milk alternative (oat and concunt) he still have severe pain and now the gut inflammation freaked me out.
I have newborn, I was thinking to express milk and reintroduce breastfeeding milk to him and cut off alternative milk and yougurt ?
has anyone done this before. I searched all the forum and I cannot find someone who thought of this

( I was eating dairy while I was breastfeeding him when he was young and he never reacted )

Has he been tested for coeliac? You need to see a specialist. If you wanted to breast feed him that’s up to you but considering he sounds like he has a dairy intolerance (which often goes hand in hand with a gluten intolerance) you could make it worse for him. Good luck, you obviously only want the best for him x

Ohnonotmeagain · 28/12/2024 20:18

He’s 2? Just cut out dairy and see if that helps. not just milk, yoghurt, cheese, any foods with dairy in them. Do it for 2-4 weeks and see if it makes a difference.

personally I wouldn’t bother with milk substitutes.

if cutting dairy works might be worth getting your go to refer you to a dietician to make sure you can balance his diet.

you could try breast milk if you have enough supply but is that really a long term solution?

The thread title says he is 6

No you can't breastfeed your 6 year old. Too old for the boob

Alwaystired2023 · 28/12/2024 20:23

Of course if you want to give him breast milk that's up to you and sounds fine, but just to check why does he need a milk substitute at all if they aren't agreeing with him? Can you not just cut both? My little one is allergic to milk and after I stopped bf at 1 they just didn't have any milk of any description or replacement and they worked fine

He is 6 years old. I meant expressing milk and adding it to his serious. His problems started after I stopped breastfeeding him when he was 2 years old

Expressing is fine!

3WildOnes · 28/12/2024 20:25

I would absolutely try giving him your expressed breast milk.

Mummiessss · 28/12/2024 20:25

Yes he was tested twice for celiac, I cannot find the other trigger. My the only other things added to his diet is milk and yougurt alternative 😭 I want to help my child because it’s going downward and gp referred us twice to dietitian and we go rejected because apparently he does f fit criteria

If he is allergic to cows milk what is wrong with oat/almond/soya? He can’t have breast milk all his life!!!

frenchnoodle · 28/12/2024 20:27

Go for it. You'll get lots of hate but it's your business not theirs.

Jollyjoy · 28/12/2024 20:28

Definitely worth trying expressed milk. Only thing is it won't be tailored to him in the way it was when he was small and feeding directly from the breast, but it can't hurt to try.

BananaSpanner · 28/12/2024 20:28

Surely you just have to get to the root cause of the problem or learn a method of living with it rather than giving breast milk indefinitely to a 6 year old?! What happens when he’s 8 or 10 or 12?

BookGoblin · 28/12/2024 20:29

Does he need a milk substitute though?

suburburban · 28/12/2024 20:29

Can you start lactating again once you have weaned your dc

I thought your milk supply dried up?

Thanks

MsCactus · 28/12/2024 20:29

If he's allergic to diary could breastmilk also cause symptoms? I ask because my brother had similar symptoms with diary and breastmilk caused him extreme pain to digest.

I think finding the cause of his stomach issues will be more valuable than giving him breastmilk

Ahhhh

MolkosTeenageAngst · 28/12/2024 20:32

I’d question why he needs a milk alternative at all? Unless he has a very restrictive diet can’t you just remove all forms of milk and yoghurt from his diet? Do you really need to replace with breastmilk?

minipie · 28/12/2024 20:32

It’s going to be very very hard work trying to BF a newborn and express for a 6 year old.

I would say by all means try a bit of expressed milk to see if it helps but it won’t work as a long term solution.

Why not try, it won’t do him any harm and might introduce some healthier gut bacteria. Please don’t tell him you are doing it though, if he lets slip to a friend that he is having breast milk then he may get bullied.

Nodlikeyouwerelistening · 28/12/2024 20:33

I’m not being funny but if he has a dairy or lactose intolerance breastfeeding won’t help. You can’t breastfeed him forever. You need to get to the bottom of the allergy/intolerance so he knows how to deal with it through his life, not delay it. You can’t exactly send him off to uni with expressed milk for his cereal.

hardhatready · 28/12/2024 20:34

I agree, give the expressed bm a go

personally I wouldn’t advertise i was doing it but from your experiences and circumstances i would definitely give it a shot.

if testing isn’t coming back with something try excluding the common allergens in turn. Testing isn’t always that reliable. Theres some good Facebook support groups. Though careful as with all these things some can be quite militant and you can end up going down a rabbit whole.

I think the order of commonality in children is something like milk & soya, egg, gluten then others. Tomatoes and other nightshades can be a common one too as high levels of histamines.

OP says she has a new child so has started breastfeeding again and plans to express some.

Miloarmadillo2 · 28/12/2024 20:35

There’s a lot of cross reactivity between cows milk protein and soya protein so don’t use soy alternatives. Have you had a dietician appointment?
