My child while he was breastfeeding he was healthy. He had eczema but was healthy from age 0-2 years old. After 2 years old stuff started going south when we introduced cows milk. He developed diarrhoe and then chronic constipation. Now he is in milk alternative and have severe stomachache, looks pale and we just find out his calprotectin is slightly high ( they will repeat it in 2 weeks to make sure it’s due to infection and not bowel disease) . He suffered so much from when he was 2 years old till now ( hospital admission for Klean prep, movicol disimpaction and now he has severe stomach cramp). His belly cramps when he goes for a poop and he is not constipated anymore so we stopped movicol. But since we introduced milk alternative (oat and concunt) he still have severe pain and now the gut inflammation freaked me out.
I have newborn, I was thinking to express milk and reintroduce breastfeeding milk to him and cut off alternative milk and yougurt ?
has anyone done this before. I searched all the forum and I cannot find someone who thought of this

( I was eating dairy while I was breastfeeding him when he was young and he never reacted )

It's really not natural. Imagine it friends found out. Would get bullied for it

Why would they get bullied. A friend breastfed her daughter until she naturally weaned at 7. She has always been a very popular little girl- never bullied. I know quite a few who breastfed until 4.

It is a possibility. And I bet they didn't know tho

It's possible to be allergic to something other than the "main" allergens. My child is IGE to milk and non-IGE to coconut. It took us months to figure out why he was screaming and writhing with stomach ache every night, and it was because so many of the milk-alternative products we were giving, are made with coconut. Plenty of others on the CMPA FB group have the same.

I'd try eliminating things until you get an answer, while being aware that non-IGE reactions can occur any time from one hour to up to a few days after consuming. I'd also get some decent child-friendly probiotics.

Why would her friends know? Her mum breastfed her at night before bed. I doubt many 7 year olds are discussing their bed time routines with friends. But I doubt many children would care either way.

I never thought about coconut being allergen, he eat coconut yougurt daily omggggg! I will definitely cut it off.

he was investigated for celiac twice and we never cut out gluten or wheat. Also IBD he is being investigated at the moment, but all his doc think very unlikely because calprotectin never pass 200, they say less than 250 indicate infection or allergy but they still investigating it. They waiting for the second calprotectin result and they said if above 50 they will scope him. So yes I done tons of research and made sure he had every investigation possible. He even had 3 x rays to make sure not constipation as well as blood tests, ultrasounds, etc 😭. I went private too to see Mike Thompson which is famous gastro consultant. All he told me I have done good for treating his chronic constipation and he looks well and need no treatmen.

thank you everyone for your input and anyone who defended me. I was hoping someone had similar situation 😭

@Mummiessss My DM never stopped giving me dairy. This was the 1970s when dairy made up a lot of my diet! I know a lot of people with IBD who can't tolerate it though, along with a ton of other foods. It's different for everyone though. My gastro nurse says that diarrhea is more common with IBD, something I never get.

Do you think you got IBD because they never eliminated the allergen ? @menopausalfart

He’s 2? Just cut out dairy and see if that helps. not just milk, yoghurt, cheese, any foods with dairy in them. Do it for 2-4 weeks and see if it makes a difference.

personally I wouldn’t bother with milk substitutes.

if cutting dairy works might be worth getting your go to refer you to a dietician to make sure you can balance his diet.

you could try breast milk if you have enough supply but is that really a long term solution?

Read! 6!

You are saying his weight and palour are an issue but consultants are saying he is well? Maybe he is just a skinny pale child? What did the consultant say about the stomach pain?

It isn’t relevant what the consultant thinks about weight and skin colour as they have no previous reference point. I had similar with one of my dc once had lost weight, looked really ill to me. I was told repeatedly she looked fine and why did I want there to be an issue (I didn’t!) but I’d seen a huge change and was terrified she had a life threatening condition (she did) but it took 2 weeks to get a diagnosis and in that time I was called everything from over anxious to attention seeking. Parents can often see changes a dr won’t recognise as don’t know the child .

I would think that a consultant can look at weight charts and understand a parent who is saying the child is much paler than they used to be. How much more reference do they need? FWIW, my dc was a massive chubster as a baby/young toddler and became a skinny child. No health concerns.

However I do agree with you that parents will know when there is something ‘up’ which is why I was asking what this highly renowned consultant gastroenterologist said about the constant stomach pain in the dc which couldn’t be easily discounted or explained.

In my experience I had a consultant shouting at me that my child looked fine and it was ‘just her skin tone’ when I said she looked grey and pale compared to normal. They just aren’t interested and I have friends who had similar reactions. They see a child especially in an and e and they made a judgement on that snapshot in time. Yes weight charts can be looked at that’s true but in terms of pallor it’s hard to judge if you don’t actually see the child often as to what’s normal or not

menopausalfart · 29/12/2024 13:21

@Mummiessss I have no idea what has caused it. There are a lot of people in my family who have autoimmune diseases: arthritis, Behçet's, MS, and Psoriasis.

Kids can be ruthless. Would get bullied for it

Mummiessss · 29/12/2024 18:13

I won’t tell him about it. I decided to do it. I will 2 weeks to ensure inflammation investigated then start from there. One drop first day and then one small spoon every day for one week then increase two etc till one cup a day.
i know it’s not long term solution but if he can have one year of being healthy and heals his gut because I know breast milk has good bacteria. Then after I can start milk ladder or something. Seeing my child sick is not easy. He is my first boy and honestly I am seeing him get worst everyday with no answer

You can also give probiotics for the good bacteria

Mummiessss · 29/12/2024 18:15

As a mum I tried everything. He eats 100% unprocessed food. I make his bread and burgers and lunch for school everyday and try always make it colourful and he prefers lunch boxes then school meals because I make it so delicious but everything I am doing is not helping him. The only processed food in his diet is the alternative stuff hence my decision to breastfeed

OP posts:
Mummiessss · 29/12/2024 18:16

I do give him BioGaia probiotics but not helping him. Movicol disimpaction ruined his gut. He was disimpacting for 3 months, which wiped off all his gut flora

Kefir?

PlopSofa · 29/12/2024 20:31

Try this one, I’m away currently so it’s a foreign website but it’s human strain bifidobacteria.

bifidobacteria longum 536, isolated from a breastfed infant.

https://de.iherb.com/pr/natural-factors-travel-biotic-bb536-10-billion-60-vegetarian-capsules/71125

Travel Biotic is its name but it holds the well researched BL 536.

there is a ton of research on this one

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1756464619300684

from personal experience it produces marvellous 💩😆😆😆

Not sure what’s in Biogaia but it’s too low and not effective enough from memory.

Optibac have a baby drops. This is a good human strain bifido breve.

and yes, could try chuckling goat kefir. Has had some very good results. Go low and slow with all of them. Especially the kefir.

PlopSofa · 29/12/2024 20:33

And you may need to supplement for months. It takes time to turn things around. BL 536 plus breast milk would be interesting. You may see quicker results with that combo because the BL will be able to use your breast milk as rocket fuel for bifido growth.

Arthien · 29/12/2024 21:02

I wouldn't give goat kefir if he has milk allergy. We were advised to avoid all forms of animal milk, no just cows' milk.

achangeofusername · 29/12/2024 22:19

He could have an oat or coconut allergy, or something like coeliac.
Breastmilk won't give him what he needs aged 6

Mischance · 29/12/2024 22:22

Yes do it. I had a very delicious cup of hot chocolate with my breast milk!

Hahahaha you made me giggle. Honestly this forum made me more confidence. I am waiting out them to rule out bowel disease and then I’ll start😢 it’s only temporary till his gut heal and I do diary ladder

Movicol is made of propylene glycol. It’s awful bad stuff for the microbiome.

Can lead to IBD.

seriously OP if you want to heal your DS you need to get yourself on Pub Med and read all about infant immunity and bifidobacteria and the scientific studies and evidence which support the usage, which I’ve been banging on about here post after post.

I’ve done a ton of research myself as I have a DD with six autoimmune diseases. Anyway, good luck.
