Damaged stomach from antibiotics? Any Dr's here please

My daughter was given tetracycline ( lymecycline) for acne.
These came as capsules, but she couldn't swallow them so took the powder out and took it like that for 2 months ( we told the gp this)
All was ok for about 6 weeks until When she started to complain about feeling nauseous.
She stopped the antibiotics after 8 weeks exactly a week ago as he feels sick and like having heartburn or feeling something in her throat.
Now for about a week she gets this weird nauseous feeling when she feels she needs and can't burp and even if she burps and relieves it, the nausea returns few minutes later and same repeats every evening/ night, she sits in her bed until 2am crying that she needs to burp but can't.
Obviously ww will go to GP but we are away for 14 days so can't go Dr.
I bought her some strong prebiotic and prebiotic here, it seemed working immediately but symptoms returned after few days?
She has no any other issues, just the non burping feeling.
She is scared to drink or eat everything, also this only happens at evenings. She seems OK during the day.
I'm worried that the antibiotics seriously damaged her stomach, as I spoke to someone here locally and that's what they suggested. Please advice kindly.

Try the double strength tablets. It may also be things she's eating or drinking upsetting her stomach. Needs to stay off fizzy drinks & fatty foods.

endofthelinefinally · 24/08/2024 18:26

Tetracycline is awfully hard on the stomach.
Probiotics and antacids will help, but it will take a while.
Speak to the pharmacist to get the correct meds and how to take them correctly in terms of amounts and timing.

Issuesninsp · 24/08/2024 18:37

Thank you.
Yes the tetracycline atbs are quite nauseous,

I had Doxycycline myself for a 10 days few times before and I was so sick on them from a day one!
She was doing really well on them and acne face cleared well, so we were happy as she was unhappy and sad about her face.
And now this...
She had the double strength Gaviscon and has quite strong prebiotic and probiotics.
She was ok for few days and yesterday for the first time got an icecream and wham, felt sick later on.
I'm just puzzled why this starts at the evening..

She will recover, but it will take time - several weeks, maybe a few months. DS (flucocacyline as a baby) and I (doxycycline) have both had major digestive issues due to antibiotics. She needs to eat a very bland diet and probiotics for a while.

Cyantist · 24/08/2024 18:46

Your Dr should have told you not to take the powder out of the capsules. Medications are formulated how they are for a reason, your average patient might not realise that but a Dr should.
She will get better though, just might take a little while

Elsewhere123 · 24/08/2024 18:47

See if she likes live natural yogurt. Very soothing on the digestion and helps with the gut biome (with a tsp of honey if she has a sweet tooth).

Issuesninsp · 24/08/2024 18:49

@MollieHill that's what someone here ( pharmacist) suggests that the antibiotics could cause the ulcer and that what I worry.
Do you think it's wise to give her omeprazole a low dose?
As gaviscon does nothing..
She is scared to drink now ( normally drinks 2-3 litres water per day) she had hardly a 0.5 l today as she thinks will need to burp and she can't..

@Cyantist when the gp gave her the atbs, I asked especially for a liquid form but gp said these don't come like that, only hard capsules.
She said try to take them and will see how she gets on, DD was ok for 6 weeks, so we were not worried..

This. The capsules should not have been opened as the contents are known to cause irritation to the oesophagus and stomach. She needs to go back to the GP to have a check up but antacids or a PPI (omeprazole or lansoprazole) may need to be prescribed for a while if she's developed an ulcer. Very bland, mild foods as well.

Also, if she's 13 she needs to start learning to swallow tablets and capsules as liquid formulations are very very expensive so prescribers are not keen to use them, even if they do exist (which lymecycline doesn't). Start with tic-tacs and work upwards. Tablets should be swallowed by tipping the head backwards. Capsules are easier to swallow when tipping the head forwards.

pico1 · 24/08/2024 19:00

She needs to stay upright for an hour after taking them as they can irritate the oesophagus. Is she lying down or going to bed after taking them? Agree that emptying the capsules is likely to cause the problem as the outer coating of the capsule is designed to make sure the active medication gets into the stomach and is absorbed more slowly, if that makes sense.

Issuesninsp · 24/08/2024 19:01

I just gave her omeprazole 20mg ( i had some of mine) so hopefully it would help her feel better..
We are in Europe now but it's 35 degrees here the whole week, at home she would drink nonstop, here she refuses as thinks will be sick or bloated from drink.

Oh yes! I missed that you had been taking the powder out of the capsules. The GP should have told you not to do that as soon as you mentioned it to them.

Issuesninsp · 24/08/2024 19:04

@pico1 she first used to take them around 6pm after dinner, then she moved it later and later just before bed time 9am, I think that's what made it worse.

OP posts:
Issuesninsp · 24/08/2024 19:04

@pico1 I meant to say 9pm ( not 9am)

OP posts:
pico1 · 24/08/2024 19:05

Probably. She definitely needs to make sure she is not lying down after taking them. If she can’t swallow the capsules she probably needs a different treatment tbh.

Omeprazole takes several days - weeks of regular doses to start to work. Under the circumstances you would be better to get some standard antacid mixture or chewy tablets for her to take regularly as it works quickly to protect her stomach. You shouldn't take omeprazole and antacids together because the antacid stops the omeprazole from being absorbed.
