High Temp, sick with any medicine

Worryismything · 20/07/2024 17:32

I have never been able to get medicine in my little one, since he was past 1year old.
He is sick as soon as any medicine goes in his mouth or if he tries to swallow it.
I have tried putting it in other things, food he likes, drinks, small amounts with a syringe...nothing is working and no medicine is getting in him.
He is currently poorly with a temp of 38 and I am worried if it gets any higher.
Has anyone else had this problem with their child?

My dc has sensory difficulties, we use paracetamol suppositories. But at 38° I wouldn't be too concerned. Let the body do its job. Keep them hydrated and resting.

longdistanceclaraclara · 20/07/2024 17:42

38 doesn't need medication. Let him get on with it

thaegumathteth · 20/07/2024 19:21

I wouldn't worry at 38 although it's a shame if he's feeling rubbish and you can't help.

I have in the past used disprol in a forbidden fruit shoot which worked 😂

For emergencies you can get suppositories but I've never used them

Worryismything · 20/07/2024 19:43

His temp is no 39.7 and he is currently sleeping.
He is only sipping water when he woke about an hour ago

How old is he? How was he when awake? Lethargic?

Worryismything · 20/07/2024 19:46

He just seems like he wants to sleep, he watched TV for 10 mins and said he throat hurt then went back to sleep 😔

Worryismything · 20/07/2024 19:46

Do you live in the UK? If so you can't get paracetamol suppositories OTC but you can get them on prescription. I think pharmacies usually have to order them in. So it won't be a quick fix for this time but worth getting the prescription ASAP so you have it for next time.

PoopedAndScooped · 20/07/2024 19:48

Just keep him cool and try get water into him

MumChp · 20/07/2024 19:49

We used paracetamol supp.
And trained to take tablets with sweets quite early.
Hope you lo feels better soon!

thaegumathteth · 20/07/2024 19:51

Look up the fever pain score and it should help you ascertain if the throat needs antibiotics or not

Worryismything · 20/07/2024 20:08

Do I just let him sleep? If I wake him all I can give him is water as he won't have medicine without sicking it back out 😔

At 39.4 you really need to be getting that temperature down - anything above 40 can cause febrile seizures.

If you really can't, then I would call 111 for advice who would likely send you to A&E

PoopedAndScooped · 20/07/2024 20:20

When did u last try him with medication? What happens if he needs oral antibiotics?

MidLifeWoman · 20/07/2024 20:24

Keep him cool, you might want to wrap damp towels around his legs. Let him drink anything he wants or eat ice lollies.
You should also get some suppositories.

PoopedAndScooped · 20/07/2024 20:25

DO NOT WRAP HIM IN DAMP TOWELS

Christ, you will send his body into shock

Worryismything · 20/07/2024 20:35

He will just sick any medicine back out, with every time we have given him medicine he just vomits it back out as soon as he goes to swallow.
I currently have him lay in bed with just his pants on and nothing else.
And doing temp every half hour, it has gone down to 39.3 since last checked.
In past times I have rung 111 and nothing happened until following day where they told me to take him to out of hours gp to then be told its viral and still left with nothing

Worryismything · 20/07/2024 20:38

I understand it is hot in England at the moment too which isn't going to be helping either with bringing temp down.
I have fan circling from other side of room and both windows open to bring in fresh air too.
We are still waiting on referral to ears nose and throat specialist as he has always struggled with throat and glands when ill and is normally sick with a cold
So I think it is partly the reason why he cannot take medicine.

Have you looked up the fever pain score

Balloonhearts · 20/07/2024 20:40

Would he swallow half a tablet? I have a child who pukes up medicine but she can swallow tablets so I just give her half a normal paracetamol.

febbabies2023 · 20/07/2024 20:40

Yeah please do not wrap him in damp towels or put him in a cool bath or anything like that. As PP said you will put his body into shock.

I personally would call 111 for peace of mind, particularly if he's very sleepy and doesn't want to be woken or anything

Other things to look out for
Cooler hands and feet
A stiff neck
Being agitated
Extremely drowsy etc

I'm sure you know all this, but I would always be cautious especially with children

Plus it's Sunday tomorrow - so probably no GP?

MollyButton · 20/07/2024 23:04

If any of those symptoms above do not just phone 111, but go straight to A&E.
Otherwise do phone A and E.
I got cool patches from the pharmacy for my kids, which helped with headaches.

UpgradedTitanCameraMan · 21/07/2024 07:37

How was he over night @Worryismything

This is bad advice and misunderstands the link between illness and febrile seizures, in a small number of children.

Hi OP if this is still an issue Call 111. Don’t ask random people online. You’ve already seen a major disagreement in what treatment is suitable or safe.
