Vulva vaginitis in my 2 and half year old

I am going insane with this!!!!

Initially we thought our daughter kept getting UTIS and kept taking her to the dr for it. The screams when she would go to the loo were triggering for me and I couldn't cope with it. Every-time we went the drs would look at me funny and say "oh it's probably nothing." Finally we took her to urgent care (trice) and a dr mentioned that the previous sample came back negative and what she could be suffering with is vulva vaginitis! I mean wtf is that even? She didn't really explain it to me - just said to ride it out.
Ride it out.... how on earth do you get a 2 and half year old to ride it out!!! She is beginning to be petrified of going for a wee and will refuse to drink water because she is scared it is going to cause a sensation.
Things we do are:

  • wash with water after any form of urination or poop
  • sudocreme
  • toilet trained day and night
  • only drinks water lots of it too
  • cranberry juice daily
  • loose clothing
  • showers only
  • she can wipe from front to back but we often revert to wiping her ourselves
  • make her come off the toilet and go back on to make sure she is completely empty.
  • childminders use cotton wool and water to clean her

Like I don't know what else I can do?
When people have asked for this to be investigated further - how have they gone about it? What have the drs said?
Sorry very frustrated and just really heartbreaking watching her go through this.

DH needs to man up and look after his daughter properly

urrrgh46 · 08/07/2024 12:35

@naemates those were somewhat my thoughts also! This is a medical condition in a very young child that needs treating - the bodily part involved is irrelevant!

This has been soo helpful! Thank you very much! ❤️

Ps. The swab should have picked up thrush if it was that.
My gp also gave epimax cream to use as barrier and also for washing instead of soap.

No dr has ever swabbed her - just checked her - saw redness and then have given antibiotics for uti. Now hopefully we'll be on the right path and be able to sort it out.

Can she put the sudocream on herself. My DDs did this during changes when they were sore. They'd be lying down and I'd hold the pot. It meant they could put what they needed but I wasn't hurting them more.

Bless him he does understand the severity of it and will do it when I make him - as a male he just feels like it's being invasive.

He takes the bulk of the childcare and does a lot with the kids.

This has been carnage when we've got her to do it herself! She ended up slathering it all over her hair and body as all she wants to do is cream herself. And trying to get Sudo crème off hair is a nightmare!

We will get her to do it more as she gets a little bit older

You or DH hold the pot. Put her hand in the right place on her body. And wipe her hand straight away. There’s no way if you control the circumstances and she is lying down that she should get it everywhere.

Sudocreme is good for bottoms, but I wouldn't put it on a little child's vulva, especially if the skin is already sore. It is very difficult to wash off and isn't as good a barrier cream as epaderm.

SwordToFlamethrower · 09/07/2024 09:57

Make sure it's pure cranberry juice from the health food shop, not the kid that's been processed with added sugar.

You have to water it down because it's very tart.

Favouritefruits · 09/07/2024 10:06

Unless your giving 100% cranberry juice I’d knock that on the head the juice you buy from supermarkets(such as ocean spray) has tonnes of sugar in it that will make the problem worse

ContentSolitudinarian · 09/07/2024 10:15

If your own treatments aren't working and you need more help, I'd take her to a dermatologist.

It's what the dr told us to do! Which is why we've been doing it - I have an appointment with them regarding this next week so will query it then

If this continues, I would push for an ultrasound on her kidneys and surrounding area. Sometimes unfortunately we need to go Lioness mode and really push. Good luck.

We've had an ultra sound and everything was clear - no blockages and her Bowles were empty after she went for a pee so there is no residue left ... just want it to be fixed! 😭

@Sh33tuC87 I would suggest a trial of NOT using sudocreme…my kids and I all react badly, some people can be allergic to the ingredients and it itself can lead to itching and burning! You then end up in a vicious cycle . I would certainly never use it on the vulval area as the skin is so delicate, ask your pharmacist about alternatives.

endofthelinefinally · 09/07/2024 10:51

The whole cranberry juice/tablets idea has been debunked following clinical trials, as far as I can remember. I agree about the sugar. Lots of plain water is probably better. I will try and find the research.

LauderSyme · 09/07/2024 10:58

I agree that your dh needs to deal with his personal feelings of discomfort and step up to properly help his very young daughter treat a medical problem she cannot manage without him.

Thank you

You're welcome. It worked for me and I had recurring utis when pregnant.

Bettergetthebunker · 09/07/2024 11:22

My dd gets this often. We have found it’s pretty much predictable that after a bath with bubbles she will get it.

Amongst other triggers but certainly bathing is a big one for some reason.

dantewest · 09/07/2024 11:19

This isnt very useful, it's an extract from a full article, provides limited analysis and seems to be saying that they tested 26 people who had a suspected allergy to something in sudacrem and found that 18 reacted in some way.

26 is a tiny sample and all were allergic to something and had been identified as using sudacrem before entering the study so were likely to show a reaction.

Is it possible that OPs daughter is allergic to an ingredient in sudacrem, I suppose it is possible but given how any use it regularly and have no negative reaction, it's unlikely.

Wizardcalledoz · 09/07/2024 12:58

I just want to clarify to @Sh33tuC87 that using the water during urination is to help with the stinging sensation - women are told to do it after birth when it is very raw down there and the urine can sting. A sports bottle or jug in the toilets to use each time will help. If dd is worried about stinging during urination this might help in the short term while you wait for it to be properly diagnosed/treated

Greatmate · 09/07/2024 13:05

Have you tried bicarb baths. Id use unscented everything.
