So basically this started about 2 weeks to be exact. My daughter of 8 years old Suddenly started to wee a lot and started to go to the toilet frequently I went out of hours the very next day where she was prescribed antibiotics for uti since then it has cleared up and she still has the urge to pee and keeps going every 20-30 mins I’m really upset and don’t know where else to take her after several trips to out of hours and gp she also got prescribed a thrush cream which has not helped I’m really scared I hope she grows out of this but atm I don’t understand what I can do can anyone relate to this and re assure me just a little 😢😢

My friends dd had all these symptoms and it turned out to be thread worms, might be worth treating just in case.

this is confusing cos when this first started she was prescribed the antibiotics trump ( sorry don't know all the name ) this one was resistant to the bacteria she had in her urine then she was put cefalexin sorry think I spelt that wrong too. She was on cefalexin for 3 days which didn't seem to work much but the doc at this point checked her urine and said it didn't show signs of infection but said he will prescribe it again for 7 days just incase

If she’s already on the antibiotics when she’s being tested that can give you a false negative - that’s why generally they make sure you the test before you start the antibiotics. Cefalexin is the daily long term antibiotic I am on, you need longer than 3 days of it to do anything.

Jotkaur · 06/07/2024 22:16

Oh really I wasn't aware of that doc said 3 days was fine also the dispenser at the chemist said it may be the wrong dose??

That’s the normal dose for a child. (I am on 500mg either once a day long term as a preventative or 3 times a day for an acute infection).

There seems to be a new thing where they only seem to give out 3 days worth now but really most infections require at least 7 days, and certainly it’s a thing we regularly discuss in the urology groups I’m in. Most people can’t shift an infection in 3 days worth of antibiotics.

I think it’s worth considering the other ideas in the thread as well - worms etc - but it may just be you need a longer, different course of antibiotics.

Jotkaur · 06/07/2024 22:29

I hope this does shift with a longer course hope she's a on a road to recovery now I think its upsetting her and us too can hardly concentrate on anything else just want her to be OK.

As PP mentioned, my experience from adult UTIs and also recently with my DS - they prescribe 3 day courses of antibiotics but I've always needed to go back for a longer course (usually of a different antibiotic too as the usual one just doesn't shift it!). I have tested negative on dip sticks and still had symptoms too.

Lighttodark · 06/07/2024 22:38

You sound very anxious and your DD might be picking up on this too
hope the new course of antibiotics helps. You can also look in to d mannose, it’s a supplement that can help with utis

Jotkaur · 06/07/2024 22:42

Yeah really has made me feel like this my mum says try not to make an issue out of it but I find that its a bit late for that. She reakon she will grow outta it

Not read all the replies OP but my DC started with this about 3 years ago and like you, I was beside myself with worry etc. sent a couple of samples to GP and came back fine…. Turns out it was a habit. DC would get excited (example it started just before Christmas and DC wanted to make sure they had a wee before seeing what Santa brought them). Then a holiday to Florida, they kept needing to pee…and playing board games, they’d go to the loo as they were scared they’d miss out!

Dry through the night so it’s not physiological and there’s no infection etc as it’s been so long so it’s basically excitement and habit! But bludy stressful for sure as you don’t know!

Monkeys 🙊

My DD had similar issues that went on for a few months. Was treated for UTI but symptoms returned, second/third urine tests were negative but then lab tests showed growth. Final course of antibiotics cleared it up. In between, drs thought it was vulvovaginitis which is also common in young girls. It’s stressful but it should clear up. Try to explain to dd these things happen and it’s not forever. Drink lots of water and try d mannose

Ensure teachers are aware and that DD has pads etc to help with any urgency/accidents at school

CeruleanDive · 06/07/2024 22:50

Negative urine dip tests are not very accurate. She may still have infection with a negative dip. If she has to have another urine test, ask for it to be sent off to be cultured again, to be sure.

Anxiety can only make things worse. You really need to get some perspective and address your own anxiety about this, OP. She will pick up your anxiety. That's not fair on her. Of course it's unpleasant for her, but your her adult, you need to be showing her calm and positive: 'this is annoying, but we will make sure it gets better.'

Elisheva · 06/07/2024 22:56

It was mentioned by a pp but just to repeat, it may be worth treating her for thread worms. They can cause these symptoms.

littleapplecottage · 07/07/2024 02:10

Not read the thread but I'm sure I've read on here that the labs aren't great at detecting infection in urine samples.
Get the correct antibiotics from the Drs - get them for 10 days, UTIs can be very persistent, and can make you incontinence when you have one, even a mild one.

Jotkaur · 07/07/2024 03:36

I'm beside with worry now but I will show a more calmer attitude towards this I think she is OK at school teachers haven't mentioned anything as yet! Hope it is just a phase like slot of people have mentioned on here and just passes I am currently giving a 7 day course of antibiotics will get that finished by weds and see how things are progressing xx
