Any idea what this is on son's leg?

This mark/bruise/blood blister has appeared on my son's leg between his knee and hip. Any ideas what it may be? He hasn't knocked it and it doesn't hurt. It's slightly raised.

Notoriously hard to get a doctors appointment and not sure if it merits an appointment or if we should wait to see if it goes?

The yellow around the edge looks like bruising, so I’d give it a week and see what it looks like then.

Summerflames · 19/06/2024 07:22

I'd be off to the doctors with that. Just to be safe.

boombang · 19/06/2024 07:23

I would say that needs a doctor to look at it today

WonderingWanda · 19/06/2024 07:26

I'd go to the Dr too, I think the bruising is a red herring as he might be rubbing it which could have caused the bruising.

DirtyDensDog · 19/06/2024 07:29

Yes I would go to the doctors with that.

Jinxyjo · 19/06/2024 07:30

Its just a bruise imo, caused by a minor trauma that he probably forgot about, like banging it on a table corner or something.

endofthelinefinally · 19/06/2024 07:37

If it is difficult to get a GP appt, I would either do an e-consult and attach the photo, or get an appt with the nurse who will ask a doctor to look at it if necessary. Are you sure it has just appeared suddenly or do you think it has been growing for a while and you just haven't noticed?

guavajuice23 · 19/06/2024 09:53

Weirdly, my DD had something similar a couple years ago (she was around 6 I think). It was on her leg and I immediately panicked as she said she could not remember hurting it and it was not sore. Called 111 who sent us to A&E - we saw an old school paediatrician who said it was just where she had banged herself and was nothing at all to worry about. He was right - it did fade after a couple of days and, strangely enough, she hasn't had anything like it since!

Cheeesus · 19/06/2024 09:54

I would wait a few days and see if it goes.

DuckDuckGoosieGander · 19/06/2024 20:42

Thanks all for commenting. It's definitely not a normal bruise and it's more raised today than before. I'll give it another day and see but will contact doctors on Friday. We don't have e consult and have to go through a queuing system at 8am to try and get an appointment unfortunately.

DS thinks it's been there a couple of weeks now. I only noticed it as he was wearing shorts.

Well, now it looks like a squashed raspberry! <Not helpful I know>

Velvetbee · 19/06/2024 21:31

I think that needs a doctor too. E consult with the pictures you’ve posted here.

@Smidge001 now you mention it, I can't unsee it!

I think it's the 'pips' that have made me wonder about it but it's definitely changed since yesterday and more raised.

That looks exceptionally worrying. You need to take him to a doctor asap

Summerflames · 19/06/2024 21:46

Second doctor ASAP! Please don't delay

Killerqueenie · 19/06/2024 21:46

Definitely would be getting that checked out. The fact it's been there a couple of weeks suggests it's not from banging it against something and not remembering about it as surely it would have faded massively by now.

Summerflames · 19/06/2024 21:47

Agree, I'd take him a&e now

Incakewetrust · 19/06/2024 21:49

I'd call the drs first thing tomorrow morning. If they run out of appointments, I'd ask for an emergency one.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 19/06/2024 21:50

Don't wait till Friday. At the latest I would phone the GP to get seen tomorrow.

I'd also be considering calling 111 tonight if it were my DC.

Eta: I mean call 111 tonight as they can make an appt for you at the GP / send the GP an instruction to see him tomorrow, bypassing the 8am queue only to be told there's no appts situation. There's also out of hours GP that they might think is suitable.

Summerflames · 19/06/2024 21:47

It's highly unlikely to be life threatening so what could A&E do?
It's neither an accident or a life threatening emergency.

It is neither an accident nor an emergency.

OP phone the doctors tomorrow and ask for a same day appointment if you can just to be safe.

Summerflames · 19/06/2024 21:52

Yeah very true re a&e. Please don't wait til Friday OP. Doctors tomorrow.

TheKoalaWhoCould · 19/06/2024 21:52

Umm, no @Summerflames .

OP, please don’t take him to A&E for a mark that’s been on his leg for several weeks! It’s not an acute issue so all you will do is sit in the waiting room for an age before being told you need to go via the GP for a 2ww appointment with dermatology. If this has been there a number of weeks though, please do make an urgent GP appointment, and be sure to mention that you think he needs a 2 week wait referral to a dermatologist.

TheKoalaWhoCould · 19/06/2024 21:53

How old is your DS?

TheKoalaWhoCould · 19/06/2024 21:54

Can I just say though - the fact there is a bruising halo around it, and also a small mark that isn’t joined to the main mark is good - it’s more likely to be an injury than anything sinister
