Any tips please for awful dandruff that's appeared out of nowhere on my 9 year old.
We've tried e45, nizoral? And head and shoulders and it's not budging. She's getting super embarrassed.

I thought it was where she wasn't washing shampoo out properly, but I've gone back to washing her hair for her and it's getting worse if anything!

T-gel? My Dd uses this and it seems to work.

longdistanceclaraclara · 15/05/2024 18:35

Cradle cap s sebhorraid dermatitis (sp?). Have you spoken to a pharmacist, start there and then go.

21andon · 15/05/2024 18:37

T gel shampoo and really good brushing / combing every night (nit comb to really get all the flakes) while the dandruff is bad. Then keep up with the t-gel. It is hormonal and a pain but this routine works very well.

branvan5000 · 15/05/2024 18:50

Thank you. I'll order some t-gel. We are probably guilty of not brushing enough. She usually has tight braids which stay in for a couple of days.

I used to add bicarbonate to T-gel and then scrub the scalp to exfoliate. It really helped with the greasy feeling

GoneIsAnotherSummersDay · 15/05/2024 21:35

if Tgel fails, try Mediceuticals dandruff kit (it’s a set of 3 bottles). It costs a bomb but it works for me and once it's under control you only need to use it every ten days ish so the cost works out not so bad.

I'd tried in excess of twenty products, some on prescription from GP and hospital dermatologist, none of which worked. I eventually saw a trichologist privately who got me onto the Mediceuticals.

Turquoisa80 · 15/05/2024 21:39

Dandrazol from Amazon works well for me, you have to keep it on the scalp for a few minutes for it to work, then use it every 2 days for maybe 3 weeks or until it clears. I also dry my hair quickly to prevent the dandruff/fungal infection from growing

Tootingbec · 15/05/2024 21:44

T-Gel worked for us. The full on coal tar brown one. Or ask your pharmacist- they can recommend something as well. Keep up with it - normally only takes a couple of washes to sort it out but might need a weekly maintenance wash with medicated shampoo. It is hormone related due to puberty

Littlemisscatlover · 15/05/2024 21:54

You can buy a shampoo called nizoral. It’s brilliant and first use often fixes the problem. It’s anti fungal and anti-dandruff. Far stronger than recomendations already given

TeenLifeMum · 15/05/2024 21:58

My 12 yo went like this after using Aussie shampoo (her twin also had a reaction but hers was on her face with swollen eyes - Aussie shampoo went in the bin).

This Vichy I’ve made a big difference after one wash and now her scalp is clear.

The GP prescribed dermax for my son after all over the counter shampoo's did nothing. Be careful not to use the dandruff shampoo on every wash as overuse can make the situation worse. The best thing for my son was actually buying a nit comb and using it to scrape the dandruff out in between washes as this helps his confidence.

branvan5000 · 16/05/2024 07:33

So last night I used head and shoulders. I left it on her for 10 mins before washing it out. Then I dried her hair and scalp fully as quite often she lets her hair air dry. I used a nit comb to scrape off some of it close to her scalp and it looks 80% better but still not amazing. I'll read through the recommendations as I suffer myself with a flaky/scabby scalp.

Ginger shampoo from the body shop was the best thing that works for DS.

sashh · 16/05/2024 08:55

Remember you need to wash the scalp, not just the hair.

Yes.
I have chronic dandruff and found the ginger shampoo and conditioner to work well.

I also find whenever I think I have found the magic solution it only tends to work for about 6 months.

I alternate between different brands every few months. I use the body shop ginger, t-gel and a medicated one from the GP.

florenceandthemac · 16/05/2024 09:03

Nizoral is the only thing that cleared mine and my DSDs

chilimartini · 16/05/2024 10:14

I keep returning to head and shoulders and Philip Kingsley dandruff shampoo

You just need to keep going with this routine. Really good comb nightly and washing regularly. When dd’s has got bad, a week or so sorts it out completely.

35965a · 16/05/2024 16:25

Wash every 2 days, brush twice a day, properly scrub the scalp when washing, nizoral twice a week, t-gel at other times. Once it’s under control head and shoulders is great but you still need to wash regularly and really thoroughly and maybe do a t-gel once a week. Blow drying the hair at the roots seems to help as well.

YesYesAllGood · 16/05/2024 16:29

As it came out of nowhere is there any chance the skin in her parting got burned in the sun? This happened to me years ago and the skin flaked really badly a couple of days afterwards. Just a thought!

mitogoshi · 16/05/2024 16:30

We got prescription shampoo in the end. A nit comb helps (sounds odd but works)

Rayna37 · 16/05/2024 16:38

I've started getting it since I stopped blow drying and switched to air drying, so I recommend along with the treatments you try to ensure she always dries her hair. Something to do with the damp environment allowing the fungal infection to thrive?!

brainexplorer · 16/05/2024 16:42

The only thing that worked for me (after 20 yrs of battling it with nit combs and hiding it with updos!) was the ginger scalp serum from the body shop. It doesn't have an ingredients list on the bottle so I don't know why it works/what the active ingredient is, but it cleared things up rapidly for me. It is water/gel based so no residue after hair dries.

Mine was chronic and didn't respond to steroids like the eczema elsewhere on my body, so I believe it was seborrheic dermatitis but it also looked a lot like psoriasis at times. Anyway, the ginger scalp serum fixed it.

Twylitette · 16/05/2024 16:43

I went like this at puberty and tbh no dandruff shampoos worked at all. Only bpdy shop ginger shampoo or baby shampoo dont irritate my scalp! Try less washing and being really gentle with it
