Diabetes? Something worse? 😢

Please talk my overtired brain down.
DS8 has had a run of illlnesses /
fevers lately. Fevers/ sore throat that last a few days, get better, then a new fever within 5-7 days. Been going on a couple of months. GP says viral as she has a few “well” days in between. I noticed today when I took her picture that she looks thinner and when I weighed her was a bit worried to see she’s lost nearly 1kg since January rather than gaining it as her growth chart would suggest. She’s also tired a lot - comes home from an activity and wants to get into bed which is odd. she does drink quite a lot and has a good
appetite so why is she losing weight? 😢I’ll obviously make yet another gp appointment but I need some reassurance tonight as I know unexplained weight
loss + fatigue are red flags for cancer 😢I’m on my own so just super stressed.

It does sound the same as my ds when he was diagnosed with diabetes aged 7. He lost weight, was run down, tied and weepy. He then started to drink loads.

don’t delay in seeking medical help. Hope it’s not but if it is diabetes it needs urgent attention.

I’m sorry to hear this ☹️do you mind sharing any other symptoms he had? And how quickly did they come on?

Sounds similar to my DS who was diagnosed type 1 at 5. Please seek medical advice urgently.
Weight loss, tired, trouble sleeping, blurry vision, dry patches of skin, hungry but losing weight were all symptoms but the thirst was the alarm bell for me.

Badatmostthings · 30/04/2024 23:36

To add it snuck up on us almost, it was only once he was on insulin and, in his words felt normal again, that he could then articulate how he'd been feeling and he'd had blurry vision etc.

Bimblesalong · 01/05/2024 07:08

The blurry vision, bed wetting and excessive thirst came on in the week before he was diagnosed.

Please get your LO seen today.

determinedtomakethiswork · 01/05/2024 07:21

I really hope she is okay. I agree with the others that you need to see a doctor ASAP.

likepebblesonabeach · 01/05/2024 15:08

My DC was diagnosed with type 1after I took them to the doctors as they were getting up every night to go to the toilet.
Dr tested her blood sugars and they were unreadable, off the scale.
Within 20 mins they were admitted to hospital and given their first insulin injection, was awful as apart from going to the toilet they seemed actually fine but were in DKA, their organs were actually shutting down.
Please take them to a&e immediately, I don't want to scare you but if it is type 1 it is life threatening, They absolutely will not think you are wasting time given the symptoms

Telllmeitsok · 01/05/2024 18:23

She’s come home from school having finished 2 bottles pf
water which is unlike her and it’s not been a hot/active day. Also running yet another temp of 38.1 and says she feels nauseous and last temp only ended on Sunday. I’m simply lost
shes Not really peeing more than usual but she is getting up sometimes which isn’t like her and she’s literally so hard to wake for school which again is odd. something isn’t right but I’m not sure it’s diabetes. Gp keeps saying viruses ☹️

MeMyCatsAndMyBooks · 01/05/2024 18:26

My ds8 has diabetes.

He was very tired, dry itchy skin, constantly wanted water would scream if he didn't have any (literally minutes after downing a 500ml bottle of water!), constantly needing the toilet, very irritated. He was in DKA with extremely high blood sugars.

Can you not get your hands on a glucose monitor? Diabetes is extremely dangerous I'm suprised the gp didn't test?

MeMyCatsAndMyBooks · 01/05/2024 18:27

Another sign they don't talk about (but what got my ds diagnosed!) is bubbly urine from the body trying to get rid of sugar.
What's her urine like?

WinterDeWinter · 01/05/2024 18:28

Op, it's crazy that the GP is still saying viral after this time and the weight loss. Get her straight back and get bloods done including diabetes. You'll know pretty quickly what's what.

FYI you can actually insist on this at any time (I mean, it's not the law, but if you've got no history of wasting their time and you say you want bloods done, IME they do it without arguing.)

GinandGingerBeer · 01/05/2024 18:33

You can ask the pharmacist to check his blood glucose (while waiting for gp) that way you'll know if it's an urgent a&e situation or not.
Did the GP do any bloods previously?

Telllmeitsok · 01/05/2024 19:25

Hmmm urine looks clear to me, don’t think it’s bubbly?
i wouldn’t say it’s excessive drinking at all but definitely drinking….and repeated infections for sure. And weight loss. And nausea daily. GP seems non plussed having dipped urine and says the fact she’s ok between temps /exhaustion tells him it’s just viruses. But no one in the house or school has this many ☹️says he doesn’t want to pit her through invasive tests for no reason and referral for bloods is 8+ weeks. I’m pretty much at breaking point with worry now

Telllmeitsok · 01/05/2024 19:46

I should add the gp dipped her urine 2 weeks ago to exclude a UTI and said it was fine - surely diabetes would show up as excessive sugar in urine? Or am I wrong?

If it was causing symptoms like this, then the urine dip would of shown ketones which is part of diabetes.

So I don't think it sounds like diabetes.

Have you gotten a second opinion?

Telllmeitsok · 01/05/2024 19:50

No, my gp surgery is Just call at 8am, wait for 2 hours on hold
and get allocated duty dr appointment and it’s been the same one each time we’ve gone the last few weeks. To see another one you have to make an appointment in advance and that is a 2-3b week wait😵‍💫

OP posts:
Badatmostthings · 01/05/2024 19:50

Only a finger prick will check blood sugar levels. A urine dip may have been used to see if she had ketones. Please get her blood sugar levels checked. It might not be diabetes but if it is then time is of the essence. Better go and get checked and it not be than leave it.

Unseenentity · 01/05/2024 19:53

The best blood test for diabetes is the fingerprint one, you don't need to wait for mother kinds of test. If you say in the consultation "I am worried about diabetes" the most likely outcome is having that specific test then and there, so everyone is on the same page.

On the whole January-May is a bit of a long timescale for diabetes to present in a child so that aspect is reassuring (though occasionally things can go different).

Telllmeitsok · 01/05/2024 20:15

I’m fretting if it’s not diabetes it’s cancer as what else would cause weight loss and repeated infections every week? 😢

OP posts:
foodtoorder · 01/05/2024 20:22

If she is still the same 24hours later and you cannot access gp services (with a concern of t1 diabetes) you have a very clear reason to go to an urgent treatment centre or a&e.

foodtoorder · 01/05/2024 20:22

I say that as a healthcare professional and a t1 diabetic.

pinkwaterbottle9 · 01/05/2024 20:24

@foodtoorder this

Bimblesalong · 01/05/2024 21:04

@Unseenentity just as a heads up, my child rumbled for about seven months before dx and went to the gp twice before the time it was picked up (he was in dka).

NewishT1Mum · 01/05/2024 21:06

Just go to A&E OP.

I hope it’s not diabetes OR anything worse.

really? Would you mind sharing the rumbling symptoms?
she is just asleep wjth low temp so reluctant to wake her and her autistic brother to go to a&e now, I think I’ll try and get an emergency gp appt in morning and be more pushy for a referral for bloods, and if I fail I’ll just take her straight to a&e I think?
