Diabetes? Something worse? 😢

Please talk my overtired brain down.
DS8 has had a run of illlnesses /
fevers lately. Fevers/ sore throat that last a few days, get better, then a new fever within 5-7 days. Been going on a couple of months. GP says viral as she has a few “well” days in between. I noticed today when I took her picture that she looks thinner and when I weighed her was a bit worried to see she’s lost nearly 1kg since January rather than gaining it as her growth chart would suggest. She’s also tired a lot - comes home from an activity and wants to get into bed which is odd. she does drink quite a lot and has a good
appetite so why is she losing weight? 😢I’ll obviously make yet another gp appointment but I need some reassurance tonight as I know unexplained weight
loss + fatigue are red flags for cancer 😢I’m on my own so just super stressed.

So… little update.
GP nice and had at least read the
history before calling us in. He admitted he’s unsure. Said it’s not diabetes having gone through her drinking intake during the day over the last week 🤷‍♀️he did say he’s concerned about blood cancers with the significant weight loss (he looked it up and she was 23.5kg in Jan and is 21.9 now) that coupled with the recurrent infections and fevers is concerning him. He said his hope is her immune system is just a bit low and she’s catching virus after virus and her weight has dropped due to this, but can’t rule out the more serious stuff. He’s referring for urgent bloods but that’s 2 weeks away at the children hospital as they can’t do paeds bloods at the gp. If she spikes another high temp (39.5+) in meantime (which I said was nearly a 100% given) I’m to take her to a&e and say the gp has requested urgent bloods. Feel pretty worried 😢

You've got her in the system now. I'm so sorry she's having such a rough time xx

Bimblesalong · 02/05/2024 19:41

So sorry things are so hard. I hope you soon have answers and it’s not so scary.

NewishT1Mum · 02/05/2024 19:45

Crossing everything for no bad news when the bloods are done.

Answersunknown · 02/05/2024 19:46

It’s not a classic diabetes story and sounds like you’ve had a urine dip - so no glucose and no ketones.
a temperature also isn’t in keeping.
it may well be a run of viral infections but it doesn’t do any harm to talk it through with your gp.
on mumsnet you’ll get a lot of, demand this, entitled to that, - you’ll get much further discussing your concerns, next steps etc like an adult conversation

Answersunknown · 02/05/2024 19:47

Just seen your update! Sounds like a good outcome.
hopefully bloods will be okay, even if the waiting is a worry.

Thank you all for your kindness 💞

Try to remember there are lots and lots of reasons other than cancer, that cause these symptoms. Doctor is trained to rule out sinister causes first. And the internet is very skewed towards worst case scenarios, as they are more reportable anecdotally.

Likelihood is it is some underlying virus, there are lots of things like glandular fever that can take a while to recover from.

Superscientist · 03/05/2024 10:20

Entering the two week pathway is scary. My mum has been on it more than once and had a clear result each time. Another time my granddad was told by a GP the test results will show oesophageal cancer and it's unlikely to be good. He couldn't have been more wrong as the endoscopy showed a stuck bolus of food mostly meat and once they removed that all of his concern symptoms disappeared.

If the GP was really concerned you would have been sent to the hospital last night. My daughter has been sent to paeds by the GP once, had referral to the paediatric nurses outpatient service once and was on the verge of being sent to paeds on another occasion.

Stay strong and keep talking as with these things the more time you spend stuck in your head with "what ifs" there more scared and anxious you will feel. You are moving in a positive direction to hopefully get to the bottom of what is going on. Much love 💕

Fwiw my DD has had a run of viruses and has eaten very little during that time. I'd be surprised if she hadn't lost weight. Fingers crossed it's just that for your DD.

NewishT1Mum · 24/05/2024 23:00

How are things OP?

Telllmeitsok · 24/05/2024 23:09

You’re so kind to ask.
so….shes definitely a lot better, eating more and has more energy and a better colour. Working hard not to keep weighing her. She does still complain of feeling sick every day and has a sore head about 3-4 times a week so I’m still on edge although gp isn’t….they think the strep A she had in April really knocked her immune system and it will get better with time, I just hate that I’m failing to snake my worry it’s something else ☹️
