Sedative for baby?

Rainyspringflowers · 02/04/2024 19:03

DD (8 months) has the most horrendous nappy rash. That barely does it justice, the skin on her genital area and bottom looks like it’s been scalded. Have seen doctor twice and given two different creams, neither have been effective. Have also been using metanium (not sure of spelling, the yellow cream.)

She is absolutely beside herself. Is there a safe sedative? I’m obviously not suggesting knocking her out but desperate for her to be a bit more comfortable Sad

Why would you need a sedative? If she is in pain then I would give Calpol.

TheShellBeach · 02/04/2024 19:07

Do they still sell phenergan for babies or has it been discontinued?
Okay I've just checked and it's available, but not for under two years.

Rainyspringflowers · 02/04/2024 19:07

We have but it doesn’t seem to be making her any more comfortable. Her skin is raw.

Why sedative - because she’s beside herself screaming and fighting Sad

I’ll google, thanks.

It isn’t suitable for children under two, unfortunately.

Lots of nappy free time and making sure the area is clean and dry is a much better idea than knocking your baby out! You need to address the root of the cause not a quick fix

Rainyspringflowers · 02/04/2024 19:09

@Favouritefruits I really have. Like I say she’s seen the doctor twice.

Besides Calpol or Nurofen there isn’t anything unless prescribed by a doctor.

my baby had horrible nappy rash as well, our GP told us to use Cavilon cream with each nappy change and to stop using wipes, just use water and cotton wool as we had when he was a newborn.

Ask the doctor for the right dosage of Phenergan for your baby. I'm going back a few years, but there used to be a table on the back with dosages for quite young babies. So it's possible.

LunaTheCat · 02/04/2024 19:11

No, , you can’t use a sedative it increases risk sudden death.
It may be worth taking baby back to GP in case there is a secondary bacterial infection needing antibiotics.

Rainyspringflowers · 02/04/2024 19:16

Yeah we have thanks @VisitationRights . It’s awful for her.

She has had two creams with an antibiotic in, it just doesn’t seem to be clearing it up very well. She must be in so much pain, it’s really upsetting as she isn’t a screamy baby and she has been absolutely inconsolable several times today.

I do sympathise. My wee one probably around the same age as your one had terrible nappy rash, it looked like a burn it was that bad.
The only thing that helped was the pharmacist gave me an anti fungal, kicking myself because I can't remember the name of it but it was a behind the counter treatment. The pharmacist was so helpful. If try asking for an anti fungal.. and then you put a top layer of barrier cream to seal. Good luck x

trousersearch · 02/04/2024 19:20

As much nappy free time as possible. I have also said friends say that Pampers nappies made they're babies nappy rash worse

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 02/04/2024 19:21

Have you introduced a new food group recently? Could it be a reaction to that?

May09Bump · 02/04/2024 19:24

Call 111 and talk to a nurse, tell them how distressed she is - her skin could be infected. We had eczema caused by a dairy allergy and it presented similar / GP initially thought it was nappy rash. Worth raising with GP as an avenue of investigation.

It's horrible not being able to sooth them, hopefully 111 will help.

GanninHyem · 02/04/2024 19:25

Have you tried an anti fungal cream? If not, Go to the pharmacist and ask for one like canestan. The only time DD had a nappy rash that wouldn't go with a smidge of metanim, canestan cleared it up.

Piriton syrup can make babies sleepy.
Conatrane was the best thing when mine was little. Poor wee thing

Wehavealaughdontwe · 02/04/2024 19:34

My DD had this and after trying everything we were prescribed steroid cream as they realised it was a type of eczema

littlecreeature · 02/04/2024 19:37

We’ve been there. Metanium, cream from GP didn’t do a thing. Bepanthem was a god send. I remember my little girl used to sleep without a nappy on a change mat and towel to give her bum a break. A dairy and egg allergy caused our issues.

TFMinx · 02/04/2024 19:43

Poor thing. My DD had it like that and the nurse practitioner we saw prescribed Timodene. It's a miracle cream in my view. She spent about a week with no nappy on and our living room covered in puppy pads. Only wore a nappy overnight with plenty of Sudocrem to stop it from rubbing. Honestly, ask for Timodene; we still use it now as soon as we see that she's flaring up and it stops it in its tracks.

Hope your little one is better soon ❤️

Infected nappy rash is so so so painful, I’ve nursed a few babies with severe rashes that weep and bled and they must’ve been so in pain. Unfortunately op at this age there’s not much can be given except max dose pain relief - you could ask for paracetamol and Ibuprofen to be prescribed using her weight to make sure she’s getting optimal doses but we wouldn’t routinely sedate a baby, it’s not safe. You can’t give piriton under a year ott and I wouldn’t use for what you want it for.

Unfortunately it’s just plenty nappy changes, keep things clean and dry, wipes can sting too the water wipes are nice sometimes in the fridge too, I liked bepanthen for bad nappy rash but we used metanium in hospital which is ok just gets everywhere. Nice soothing baths might help. However if you find she’s no better, she’s got a fever or you’re worried about her @ 8 months absolutely get her seen again. As others have said think about anything new in her diet that might have triggered this, sometimes teething can. It’s not nice and I really feel for you.

Oh, apologies, I did not realise piriton was not suitable for babies under one.

Misscloudycat · 02/04/2024 19:53

Breastmilk on it can do wonders

Optimistic66 · 02/04/2024 19:56

My son was like this and i had to revert back to cotton wool pads and warm water for a few days and it would help.

then yellow metanium cream to heal

he would get red blisters and it would bleeed - honestly was so upsetting.

baileybrosbuildingandloan · 02/04/2024 19:57

Please don't sedate your baby without medical advice.
