Sedative for baby?

DD (8 months) has the most horrendous nappy rash. That barely does it justice, the skin on her genital area and bottom looks like it’s been scalded. Have seen doctor twice and given two different creams, neither have been effective. Have also been using metanium (not sure of spelling, the yellow cream.)

She is absolutely beside herself. Is there a safe sedative? I’m obviously not suggesting knocking her out but desperate for her to be a bit more comfortable Sad

I saw a very good doctor when my 8-month old had nappy rash and this was his advice:

  • no fruit or acidic foods like tomatoes
  • clean bum with a cotton pad soaked in olive oil
  • leave nappy off as much as possible
  • use metanium cream with bepanthen on top

Im assuming you’re not using wipes? Just cotton pads and warm water. Dab dry. Nappy off as much as possible.
If it’s really not clearing then keep going back as may be another kind of rash!

Thanks so much. It really is awful. Have been a bit teary myself, it’s horrible not being able to help.

I wouldn’t dream of using anything (except obvious calpol etc) without medical advice Smile

Unfortunately I stopped breastfeeding at 6 months, wish I was still producing milk! Were just using water but it really is so so sore, weeping and blistered Sad No new food groups recently and I’ve just been giving her very plain food.

You know you don’t have to remove the metanium every time? Leave the layer. You can use an emollient such as zero base or even olive oil to clean rather than water.

Has your GP checked it’s not thrush? My son got thrush when he was little and it was awful and he was in so much pain. We were also prescribed a cream but it didn’t work and then an anti fungal which within 2 nappy changes you could see an improvement

MoorGirl · 02/04/2024 20:20

Have you tried ilex? It worked miracles for us, with a thin layer of Vaseline on top. It forms a seal and actually allows the skin to heal. Good luck, it's horrid I know.

Rainyspringflowers · 02/04/2024 20:25

Thanks for all these suggestions. @OurChristmasMiracle the doctor has prescribed some cream for thrush. It’s hard because we are told different things!

Honestly it sounds more like thrush than nappy rash but I’m not a doctor.

I hope little one feels better soon.

BlackKittyMama · 02/04/2024 20:32

As others have suggested, could it be an allergic reaction? My LO has a reaction like this when he has soy. Have you noticed any other spots?

RandomMess · 02/04/2024 20:35

Insist the GP does a swab, one of mine had peri anal strep - it was grim.

Get on prescription or just buy "Sprilon" spray - it's for bed spores it's amazing when it's this bad as you don't have to touch them to apply and it's thin and breathable.

I hope so and the cream works, she’s so sore Sad

@BlackKittyMama i haven’t and she hasn’t eaten anything much recently … she had some pasta with some chicken and mixed veg. And some toast.
