High heart rate, temp and resp rate

Mumoftwo2022 · 25/02/2024 22:37

Hi

i I know everyone is going to say take him to hospital but I’m thinking cos of the doctor strike can this wait til morning. Little boy is 16 months

temperature since friday
gone down hill this evening , temp at 40, bad cough, resp rate 60 heart rate 162.
given him some Nurofen so think I’m gonna see if that brings it down as last time dr said high heart rate is linked to high temp
he is currently asleep so if he was really unwell he would be more unsettled right?

I hate wasting doctors times and don’t really wanna be waiting hours when I think he is ok but then I doubt myself 😢

Breathing and heart rate are way too high, I wouldn’t risk it. Take him in

hayley013 · 25/02/2024 22:40

Give 111 a call, I think hd would need checking out with that heart rate if paracetamol or nurofen aren't controlling the temp and bringing everything down

I wouldn't hold off because of doctor strikes, the ward will be as prepared as possible and sick children will be seen.

Hope he feels better soon

DistingusedSocialCommentator · 25/02/2024 22:43

OP
For reassurance at the very least, call 111 and take it from there.

Have you tested DC for Covid? Either way, at least 111 call is needed

TeaKitten · 25/02/2024 22:44

Call 111 and then take him in, the resps are too high and your duty is to your child, not the NHS. Strip him off in the meantime to help cool him down

Mumoftwo2022 · 25/02/2024 22:46

No not tested for covid, I don’t have any tests I do think I’ve not done one for about 2 years

thanks for your replies going to check him in 15 mins and see if the Nurofen as brought the heart rate down if not I will ring 111 as you’ve said . His oxygen sats were 92 but I don’t know how reliable this oxomiter I have is especially cos his fingers are so small.

Maybeicanhelpyou · 25/02/2024 22:50

His breathing rate is fast, and 92% is getting too low

VanillaImpulse · 25/02/2024 22:51

He could be at risk of sepsis, he needs to be checked out asap

GrassWillBeGreener · 25/02/2024 22:51

We'd not be happy with a respiratory rate of 60, no-one will think it inappropriate if you take him to A&E. Your plan to review him in 15 minutes sounds good but if I were you I'd start packing a bag to take with you while you wait.

DistingusedSocialCommentator · 25/02/2024 22:51

Good luck IP, its always harder to work out what's what with young children/toddlers/babies

Also, be aware and extra careful tonight if DC throws up or wants to throw up -

Heavenssakes · 25/02/2024 22:51

Call 111.
Now.

olderbutwiser · 25/02/2024 22:52

Normal range at 18 mo this would be resps 25-35 and heart rate 110-150. Temperature is obviously pretty high. If he has a cough then how is the quality of his breathing? Is his nose flaring, or chest dipping, or any funny noises?

I suspect 111 will send you in and a sick toddler will get fast attention in A&E whatever the circumstances.

TeaKitten · 25/02/2024 22:52

Pack your bag while waiting your 15 mins OP then you are ready, and charge your phone if needed.

Fingerscrossedfor2021HK · 25/02/2024 22:52

Take him in right now. The NHS is here to help us and not vice versa. Do not let anyone fob you off - your gut is telling you something is wrong so listen to it. Fingers crossed for your little one.

RampantIvy · 25/02/2024 22:52

I'd be ringing 111 now TBH. It does sound like this needs medical attention.

TeaKitten · 25/02/2024 22:52

Oh and phone 111 while waiting

strugglingnd · 25/02/2024 22:54

Straight to AE . HR very high ,Resps very high . My son had aspiration pneumonia with similar symptoms. Go now please !

Workbabysleeprepeat · 25/02/2024 22:56

I agree - don’t wait. Young children become very poorly very quickly and 92% saturation with high temp and high heart rate should be seen asap. Call 111.

VanillaImpulse · 25/02/2024 22:58

Any rash at all?
Has he had normal amount of wet nappies today?
Has he eaten or been drinking normally?

TurquoiseDress · 25/02/2024 22:59

By all means call 111, but from what you've said I think he definitely needs to be seen tonight in A&E for full assessment

If you wait for 111 it may be some time before they get back and they will likely tell you to go in given the observations you've reported

Regardless of doctor strike, a sick toddler will still take priority in A&E

Kitkatcha1 · 25/02/2024 23:00

You need to get him to hospital, resp rate, o2 and heart rate very worrying. My daughter has been admitted via ambulance every time she's had the same symptoms

justasking111 · 25/02/2024 23:01

My DS had a seizure and went floppy when this ill. He was in hospital for three days. Please call 111.

Mumoftwo2022 · 25/02/2024 23:02

Will do, temp still 39.5. Hr 165. Poor little man

OP posts:
kookit · 25/02/2024 23:04

Ditto please call 111 or just head to A&E - my DD had these symptoms twice in the space of 4 weeks back in Nov/Dec and was admitted for a week each time. I don't mean to scare you but my daughter was also at 92 oxygen and around 169/170 bpm and she was put on oxygen almost immediately when we got to hospital and IV antibiotics. She was grey, poor love. Thinking of you both Flowers

RampantIvy · 25/02/2024 23:13

After your update please just go to A & E.

lentafortuna · 25/02/2024 23:23

Pack a bag and take him to A&E. 92% in an 18 month old will get seen quickly. Hope he feels better soon
