I’m not sure what’s going on or if it even is nappy rash I’m dealing with my baby pooped today and was in her poopy nappy for about 10 mins probably less, as I’m probably over estimating the time it took me to fill her baby bath and get her towel and clothes, it definitely was not long enough time to get nappy rash, my baby is never ever left in a dirty nappy and has only had nappy rash twice the 2nd time turned out to be thrush, but I’d say the last 2 weeks she has been getting nappy rash frequently nothing has changed apart from her diet when I took her nappy off I noticed her bum and private area was red and I was very confused because she definitely was not left in her nappy long enough to get nappy rash she pooped as I was getting her bath, towel and clothes ready, the part that confused me the most is she screamed and screamed so hard when I wiped the poop when it only looks mild there isn’t even an actual rash just the skin is a little red, I am worried it might be something she has eaten or an allergy I don’t know what is happening with her or now to stop this I don’t think this is normal before the last 2 weeks she only had nappy rash twice in her life, and now it is happening more frequently in id say around the time I stopped feeding store bought baby food and started almost exclusively giving home cooked food and also doing blw I contacted HV today and still haven’t got a reply I’m going to make an appointment with my GP tomorrow my baby is really uncomfortable I think something might be wrong I am really worried she does eat a lot of solid food during the day and I have noticed she is straining harder than usual to poop too I am not sure if that is connected to the nappy rash

This is completely normal with teething.

You need to clean her only using water and cotton wool (no wipes) and dab her dry with a muslin. Apply the thinest layer of the yellow nappy cream (begins with an m).

Lot of nappy free time without any nappy cream on.

Do this and it will be gone in a couple of days.

@Onceuponaheartache literally a few minutes after her last eating she poop that’s why I was getting her bath ready because she was covered in food, she had apple and strawberry’s and some squished raspberry’s. (Her snack) before that she had a few spoons of weetabix with some strawberry purée mixed in (she wasn’t hungry so didn’t eat very much) and when she pooped again after that it was around 20 mins after having an Ella’s kitchen chicken casserole pouch

It’s a reflux to poo after eating. It takes appropriate 24 hours for food to travel through the digestive system so today’s poo is from yesterday’s food.

Are you breastfeeding? If you are, pump a little and put it on the affected area and let it dry. Echo the no wipes comments, cooled boiled water and cotton wool!

Smartiepants79 · 10/01/2024 18:45

My Dd used to do this occasionally. Sudden and very nasty nappy rash that appeared very quickly.
We decided in the end that it was possibly too many tomatoes.
It only happened a few times and she is not allergic or intolerant to any foods that we know of. She does have more sensitive skin than average though.

Lollibert · 10/01/2024 18:51

@Smartiepants79 yes she has sensitive skin too! Today some blueberry juice got on her cheek and that cheek went red the other cheek with no blue berry juice was fine

Every time I've had a child with nappy rash that's problematic there has been a fungal element to it. I would speak to gp and suggest this.

FoulWrinkledWitch · 10/01/2024 19:07

Definitely try Metanium, as pp suggest, and use lots of it. It's very thick and waterproof and seals the skin from contact with contents of the nappy. One of my DC had extremely sensitive skin as a baby and it was the only thing that prevented very bad nappy rash.

Shopper727 · 10/01/2024 19:11

I’d second metanium although it gets everywhere and stains we used it in hospital. Even when you think they aren’t swallowing saliva they absolutely do, as someone else said, air her bottom when you can - you could get some pads - I used puppy pads for my son as they were cheap. Just let him have loads of nappy free time. Clean with plain water and use plenty cream, either metanium or betpanthen. It will pass but it is really horrible for them.

TooBigForMyBoots · 10/01/2024 19:14

Both my DC suffered nappy rash when teething. The most effective thing for them was whisked up egg white. It didn't drag like creams and I kept it in the fridge so it was immediately soothing and cooling.

Bum meringue worked for us.Grin

Marilla1966 · 10/01/2024 19:18

Metanium worked within hours on the worst nappy rash on my kids. Always surprises me it’s not behind the counter in the chemists…..it’s soooo good.

MrsMarzetti · 10/01/2024 19:44

Aqueous cream with calamine

Lollibert · 10/01/2024 21:23

@TooBigForMyBoots I’ve never heard of bum meringue lol

Agree. My GP told me about it. Magic stuff.

As much air as possible, clean with lukewarm water and cotton pads, gently pat dry with a flannel and then metanium. You don’t need to panic, it will be a bit sore but nothing to worry about.

Really air is the best thing for it, let her hang out without a nappy for as long as possible. When DS was in NICU he had terrible nappy rash due to pooping constantly and the nurses did “exposed nursing” which was literally just leaving his bum out to the air. Amazing how much it helped- he’d had surgery in that area and it was very sensitive but really helped clear it up.

Bless him, that's made me so sad. I hope he's doing OK now.

Justhereforaibu1 · 10/01/2024 21:43

Just a thin layer of metanium OP. Echo a previous poster that there could be a fungal element. My dd suffered terribly and the only thing which worked was a combined hydrocortisone / antifungal from the doc.

Wanna17 · 10/01/2024 21:45

Is she teething?

GreatGateauxsby · 10/01/2024 21:47

momamama · 10/01/2024 17:55

If the skin is really sore I use always swear by metanium

yep…

Continued use of a thin layer of metanium.

regular changes as well…

teething can do awful things…

OooohAhhhh · 10/01/2024 23:03

It's just the body getting used to food/weaning, it happened to me when I started weaning mine. Her bum was red raw, so red it was shiny and no nappy rash cream would go on it as the skin was slippy and it just slipped off. The change in poo due to the new diet literally took the skin off.

Lollibert · 11/01/2024 08:42

@Wanna17 yes teething terribly
