I’m not sure what’s going on or if it even is nappy rash I’m dealing with my baby pooped today and was in her poopy nappy for about 10 mins probably less, as I’m probably over estimating the time it took me to fill her baby bath and get her towel and clothes, it definitely was not long enough time to get nappy rash, my baby is never ever left in a dirty nappy and has only had nappy rash twice the 2nd time turned out to be thrush, but I’d say the last 2 weeks she has been getting nappy rash frequently nothing has changed apart from her diet when I took her nappy off I noticed her bum and private area was red and I was very confused because she definitely was not left in her nappy long enough to get nappy rash she pooped as I was getting her bath, towel and clothes ready, the part that confused me the most is she screamed and screamed so hard when I wiped the poop when it only looks mild there isn’t even an actual rash just the skin is a little red, I am worried it might be something she has eaten or an allergy I don’t know what is happening with her or now to stop this I don’t think this is normal before the last 2 weeks she only had nappy rash twice in her life, and now it is happening more frequently in id say around the time I stopped feeding store bought baby food and started almost exclusively giving home cooked food and also doing blw I contacted HV today and still haven’t got a reply I’m going to make an appointment with my GP tomorrow my baby is really uncomfortable I think something might be wrong I am really worried she does eat a lot of solid food during the day and I have noticed she is straining harder than usual to poop too I am not sure if that is connected to the nappy rash

Also she pooped again a few minutes ago and I changed her straight away once again she screamed as she was being wiped, and she just pooped again as I am typing so I am going to change her now I don’t think she was finished pooping when I changed her

If the skin is really sore I use always swear by metanium

momamama · 10/01/2024 17:55

The yellow one

ClumsyNinja · 10/01/2024 17:55

What are you using to clean her? Cotton wool and water or baby wipes?

Lollibert · 10/01/2024 17:57

@momamama I put some on when it happened today and it was still sore for her when I changed her just now I’m making an appointment tomorrow with GP also the nappy rash appeared very suddenly I’m not sure if that might be a symptom of an allergy

Nappy rash skin feels like a burn, so wiping it hurts like mad, so no wonder she’s screaming. Try cleaning her with cool water and a flannel instead of wipes. And put the cream on the inside of her nappy instead of on her skin.

Lollibert · 10/01/2024 17:58

@ClumsyNinja kirkland fragrance free wipes

Firstly, in the kindest way calm down!!

Nappy rash is really common and more often than not it isn't something to panic over.

How old is she? You mention solid food so guessing over 6 months. Is she teething?

Teething often causes poop to have a higher concentration of stomach acid. I think our hv said something abiut over salivating etc being the case but it was 10 year ago!

The acid can "burn" the skin quite quickly so given how fast it has come on etc I would say this is probably likely to be the cause.

I would try and let as much air get to her as possible after her bath, as pp said metanium is amazing stuff, maybe try a bit of talc and try not to let her get to hot and sweaty down there as that can cause it to become thrush.

Be kind to yourself!!!+

Denimdenimdenim · 10/01/2024 18:00

Very gently dab the area with cotton wool and water when it's very red, rather than wiping with a baby wipe. Lots of bepanthen and it should clear in a day or so. Keep it nice and clean and give them some nappy free time to let the air get to it.

DS had nappy rash bad once and it worked really well to clear it.

MirrorSignal1 · 10/01/2024 18:02

Even fragrance free wipes irritate skin. Better to use water and cotton wool very gently. And 1 second metanium. In fact a base of metanium with sudocrem on top is great. Btw I found that ten minutes in a poopy nappy was enough to cause nappy rash. Poo can really irritate the skin.

Sunshineclouds11 · 10/01/2024 18:06

I always allowed some nappy free time when DS bum was sore and it helped

Lollibert · 10/01/2024 18:06

@Onceuponaheartache yes teething, with tooth about to erupt, and also she doesn’t swallow her saliva it all comes out of her mouth she drools a lot, can fruit cause acidic poop? She has fruit with every meal

As much air as possible, clean with lukewarm water and cotton pads, gently pat dry with a flannel and then metanium. You don’t need to panic, it will be a bit sore but nothing to worry about.

Really air is the best thing for it, let her hang out without a nappy for as long as possible. When DS was in NICU he had terrible nappy rash due to pooping constantly and the nurses did “exposed nursing” which was literally just leaving his bum out to the air. Amazing how much it helped- he’d had surgery in that area and it was very sensitive but really helped clear it up.

idontlikealdi · 10/01/2024 18:08

Yes fruit can. As does teething.

Lots of nappy free time and yellow metanium.

Don't leave her sitting while you fill the bath.

Yes fruit absolutely can cause a rise in acid being excreted.

Unless the skin breaks abd becomes infected there is no need to go to the gp.

All the advice given here is what I followed, dd had a particularly awful set to with it when she first developed lactose intolerance, her skin became so thin from it that even the slightest touch would cause it to split and bleed.

Honestly, it is a normal part of being a mum with a baby I promise!!! I am guessing you are a first timer?

Cool water, cotton wool, balls of the big packs where you rip a chunk out is better than the pads as they can scratch.

Whatever barrier cream you have. Bepanthen, metanium etc..I would avoid sudocream as I found it made dd worse but you can only try and see what works for your dd.

Air time...plaster your floor in puppy pads and let her roam free as much as is realistically possible.

It will clear in a day or 2!

Lollibert · 10/01/2024 18:16

@riotlady i am going to make an appointment with GP tomorrow as I worry it could be a feed allergy because before this she never ever got nappy rash

Blahblah34 · 10/01/2024 18:18

This sounds weird but drying the bum with a hairdryer on the cool setting before putting a new nappy on can really help.

SwayingInTime · 10/01/2024 18:20

If yellow metanium doesn't work it could be thrush. My only parenting tip!

Lollibert · 10/01/2024 18:20

@Blahblah34 i don’t have a hair dryer 🙈 I have put her on a a towel with no nappy and the redness has already reduced significantly 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

Put the yellow cream on her, it will help immensely. A really thick layer & do it every single nappy change.

Be warned, it stains & doesn't wash out so don't get any on your clothes, but it is a game changer for nappy rash.

How long between the poop and her last eating?

What did she last eat?

Lollibert · 10/01/2024 18:29

@Onceuponaheartache literally a few minutes after her last eating she poop that’s why I was getting her bath ready because she was covered in food, she had apple and strawberry’s and some squished raspberry’s. (Her snack) before that she had a few spoons of weetabix with some strawberry purée mixed in (she wasn’t hungry so didn’t eat very much) and when she pooped again after that it was around 20 mins after having an Ella’s kitchen chicken casserole pouch

This is a classic teething symptom. I could always tell when a new tooth was coming because of this!

What cream are you currently using?

Completely agree with the wipes being too harsh, warm water is all you need. And with the nappy free time. Give her bum some air.

Onceuponaheartache · 10/01/2024 18:36

Assuming this isn't the first time she has had those foods I would say that it is massively unlikely to be a food allergy if this is the first time she has had nappy rash in this manner.

The fruit will have increased the acid, but won't have been digested fast enough to cause the issue.

Weetabix- gluten allergy doesnt present with poop being the first issue normally. More painful bloating, gassy etc.

If there was milk on the weetabix dairy allergy could cause the issue you are having (i am dairy allergic & lactose intollerant) BUT i assure you, you would have known long before now if she had either a lactose intolerance or a dairy allergy!!

Teething is the far more likely cause.

Honestly. This is not something to go to the gp about. If you are concerned ring your HV but otherwise you are going a bit ott.

EverybodyLTB · 10/01/2024 18:37

I remember all this worrying, it’s awful! Next time see if you can really gently shower her off without going directly on the affected area, let the water run down her back, and then literally don’t touch just lay her on a big towel and waft something to dry her. All of mine never had nappy rash apart from the odd time here and there and it felt like the worst thing in the world, it is upsetting. You’re doing everything you can, just air and try not to touch or cover at all if avoidable, it’ll start to fade soon.
