Single mum here and on my own and struggling ☹️
DD7 been just “off” since 22nd when she started with a temp, no other symptoms. quieter than usual over Xmas and since Boxing Day has been really tired, needing to lie down between playing, sore legs, off food and a bit hot with a cough Yesterday she went downhill and hit fevers of 40 and such a terrible cough and congestion. I’ve called Gp who don’t have any appointments so will need to take her to out of hours later, my neighbour has kindly offered to sit with her brother to let me take her but can’t come until 7pm. She gently suggested it’s likely just flu based on the above but I am concerned she’s getting worse not better and is sooo hot.i was thinking it might be a chest infection but I have no idea. I doI have anxiety so find it hard to know what’s right and wrong in times of stress - I have no one else to talk to IRL so wondered what you would all do? Would you take her in or carry on riding in out at home based on likely flu? Thank you x

I'd take her seeing as it's been a week now, if it is some kind of infection she needs medicine.

AuntMarch · 29/12/2023 12:35

Although maybe call 111 and see what they suggest, they'll know better than me!

It could be flu if it's been a week,or could be a chest infection but it's best to ask for advice and will put your mind at ease,I'm sure it is a worrying time for you but give yourself some credit and be kind to yourself, your being a good parent looking out for your daughter.fingers crossed she gets better soon good luck

MissIndecisive2023 · 29/12/2023 12:47

Yes I would also call 111 and see what they say. Have you been giving regular calpol/ibprofen to bring the temperature down? Does it come down with medication? Is she managing to have plenty of fluids? It may well be flu or covid, there is plenty of both around at the moment.

Poppsidoppsi · 29/12/2023 12:52

In your shoes, OP, I would want her seen. Trust your gut - it could be viral / covid but you know your child. I would get her seen for peace of mind (I have awful health anxiety too!). I hope she feels better soon.

Sunbeamsandshadows · 29/12/2023 12:55

Thank you all 💞I’ve tested her for covid and she’s negative….her temp does respond to calpol etc then goes back up again. My neighbour seems to think it’s pointless getting her checked as it’s “clearly” just flu but I just want a chest infection ruled out in case that needs antibiotics.

If I was you I’d just take both children to the hospital and get my daughter seen. Just for peace of mind. Single parents have to get on with it.

Candycurrantbun · 29/12/2023 12:58

I'd take her to be seen.

MajesticWhine · 29/12/2023 12:58

If her chest is crackly then that's a concern, but otherwise I wouldn't go to out of hours, unless she's really listless.

Legoroses · 29/12/2023 12:58

Get her seen if you've already got a GP appointment. She might need antibiotics. And you'll feel more reassured going into the weekend if it's just a respiratory infection that needs to run its course. Hope she's much better very soon.

TomatoSandwiches · 29/12/2023 13:00

My son (7) had a temperature that would come back after calpol wore off, I took him to A&E after his temperature shot up to 40.1°C.
His blood cultures came back positive for Strep A and has started a 6 week course of IV antibiotics.
It can be quite serious and I would always want my child to be seen with a temperature that high tbh.

Sunbeamsandshadows · 29/12/2023 13:04

Thank you all.
No Gp appointments so has to be out of hours unfortunately. I’m guessing it’s viral as she’s congested and awful cough but it’s the super high temp that is worrying me and how easily tired she is after Just 10 mins of playing she needs to lie down for half an hour ☹️x

Sorry I meant to add I don’t know if her chest is crackly- her cough sounds very deep and wet but that’s all I can tell x

How old is brother? How much of a pain would it be to take them both? Pack phone/tablet/headphones/battery pack and sandwiches.

I don't think it's a problem to wait until your neighbour can come, but it will be quicker if you go ASAP, and the pharmacies will probably still be open on your way home so you won't need to go to any trouble to find someone to fill the prescription.

Either way you may wish to call 111 and see if they can get you an OOH appointment in advance so you're not waiting around for hours when you get there.

Candycurrantbun · 29/12/2023 13:08

Take her and then your mind will be at rest.

Jingleballs2 · 29/12/2023 13:19

My son has been the same, we are heading towards 3 weeks of it 😣 no energy, random temperatures that come and go, he's lost loads of weight from no appetite, the cough is awful and makes him sick. She the doctor earlier just to check for a chest infection and she basically said if the gunk he coughs up/throws up is clear and not a gross colour then it won't be an infection and there are some horrible viruses like this going around that linger for a while. Might pay to get him checked to ease your mind, but I've heard of loads of kids having the same sort of thing x

Sunbeamsandshadows · 29/12/2023 13:55

Thank you so much, she’s definitely lost weight too so this sounds very similar. I really hope your son feels better soon x

Tinybirdie · 29/12/2023 14:29

Yep. Exactly the same here symptom wise. We are just back from second GP visit. Chest clear although her could alternates between wet and dry and relentless making her puke. Tummy soft. Urine clear. Said the virus is lasting 4 weeks in some people and half the GPs have it.

Sunbeamsandshadows · 29/12/2023 15:22

Oh really? I’m sorry to hear your lo has it too but reassuring it’s not just us and that it’s not unusual for it to go on for a while ☹️x

OP posts:
Silverbirchtwo · 29/12/2023 15:26

It may have started with a cold/flu but it may well now be a chest infection that will need antibiotics. See a Doctor, talk to 111 or go to A&E (if you are very worried).

Wooloohooloo · 29/12/2023 16:53

People on the internet can't diagnose- phone 111.

Musiclover234 · 29/12/2023 16:56

Lots of flu about this Christmas (
positive confirmed results). It’s flooring lots of people for a while. If concerned get them checked out could be a chest infection that’s developed. .
