Any warm drink will soothe his or her throat. It’s only 2 weeks but I’d stick to the guidance personally and offer warm milk, water etc.

😂😂😂😂😂 this is why you don’t get advice on food from MN.

Difflam throat spray is the best thing for sore throats imo, children under 1 can take it. I don’t think 2 weeks would do an awful lot in terms of the botulism risk, but as a PP said warm drinks of any sort will help if you’re worried of the risk.

Oh for goodness sake. It's honey not crack. OP - it's fine. Two weeks will make no difference.

It isn't fructose it is a mix of several sugars, mainly glucose and fructose.

Honey is not suitable for children under 12 months old as it can cause botulism. Saying that, most shop bought honey contains very little real honey and is mostly sugar syrup. Still, I wouldn't recommend any honey under 1 years old.

Is this true? I buy cheap honey and it says 100% honey on the packaging. I was surprised as I keep seeing people saying it's not honey 🤷🏼‍♀️.

I know you have to be careful with maple syrup as that's often sugar syrup.

Jinglingallthewaytochristmas · 08/12/2023 12:08

Nothing magically is going to happen in the next two weeks to make honey safer so I wouldn’t worry about honey but sugarydrinks tend to dry out the throat so aren’t very effective.

I'm a beekeeper and it's well known that supermarket honey is blended from different countries - usually China and Ukraine - and sugar syrup is added. Hence why it's so cheap.

As PP have said, I doubt 2 weeks would make much difference but definitely wouldn't give it to the baby.

Thanks for the article, but it doesn't specify any brands. Do you know how we can reliably buy proper honey? Not everyone can access farmers markets, I usually buy Littleover Apiary from supermarkets.

Isn't fructose the type of sugar found in fruit? I doubt it's that bad for you.

tempnameforadvice · 08/12/2023 13:14

Honey has some natural vitamins, and sugar has more fructose and glucose than honey.

Homesweethome93 · 08/12/2023 15:50

Thanks for your replies. My little one has water and breast milk no juice. My next door neighbour gave me some honey for him and I looked it up and it said not to under ones but obviously it's 2 weeks away, the lady next door said she's given it to all her grandchildren when they have had a cough but I still wasn't sure...

Buy honey which states the origin and doesn't say 'blended'.

Local facebook groups/marketplace will often have beekeepers or bee clubs selling their own. I think M&S did some. Worth a check.

Real honey won't be 49p from the supermarket either. Real honey has many antibacterial properties and can be used in lots of ways medicinally. Here is something I found on Google but I'm sure there's lots out there.

@johnworf thank you :)

@johnworf but this states 100% honey. Is that a lie then?

@johnworf I will be looking for proper local honey though!

I'm not sure which product the label is from.

Supermarket honey can be labelled as pure honey even though it is blended and doesn't contain pollen. It really needs sorting out as its misleading.

tiredandolderthanithought · 08/12/2023 21:51

@johnworf it's Sainsbury’s cheap one.

After I had heard about sugar syrup I started looking at labels. It's awful if they can do that and stare 100% honey!

GeorgiePorge · 08/12/2023 22:08

High fructose corn syrup is the devil... Fructose consumed as part of fresh fruit is good for you.

Processed fructose drinks especially in excess are documented to have negative affevts on your body's sugar responses.

Real honey in moderation is a very natural food source that humans will have been consuming for thousands of years and requires little to no processing .

seen a few different documentaries about 'honey' from China being just flavoured sugar syrup and basically is a massive racket to the point that any blended honey from non eu is unlikely to be honey.

Local honey can have huge health benefits.. including helping with hay-fever.

Vets prescribe medical grade honey for open wounds on animals because of its antimicrobial properties.

I have found honey and hot water to be far better for a sore throat than anything else... but no idea if it would help a cough.

If your child is a good size and general health for their age the 2 weeks isn't going to make any difference.
