6 year old refusing to take earrings out!

rootsandwings89 · 11/10/2023 19:23

My daughter got her ears pierced for her 6th birthday after months of begging. It's been almost a year and she refused to take them out! She's only supposed to keep them in for 6 weeks.

She won't do it, wont let us near her to do it, can't be bribed, we've taken away her iPad, nothing works. She scared it will hurt.

Any ideas what we can do???

Do they need to come out?

Moomoomo · 11/10/2023 19:33

Why can't she just leave them in?

They can be taken out after 6 weeks but certainly don't need to be. I have a piercing that still has the original jewellery in it after 13 years.

rootsandwings89 · 11/10/2023 19:50

Tbh I just thought they'd need to come out because they'd been in such a long time and the earrings might get infected - is that not the case??

No

Moomoomo · 11/10/2023 19:53

Not at all! They'll be fine.

I'm sure she'll decide to change them at some point in the future anyway but you don't need to stress about it.

dementedpixie · 11/10/2023 19:54

I have had the same earrings in for months and months. There's no need to remove them if she's having no issues. You keep the earrings in for at least 6 weeks not a maximum of 6 weeks.

Why would they get infected? It's been a year. If they were going to get infected that would have happened ages ago. The holes are long healed by now. I really don't get what the issue is.

Just leave her be.

YellowChrysnthemum · 11/10/2023 19:54

I barely ever take mine out. As long as they're clean it's fine - and just washing in the bath or shower is fine once they're healed.
Dd had hers done in July and we've only taken them out twice - she sleeps in them, and so do i.

Gymmum82 · 11/10/2023 19:55

Why does she need to take them out? Just leave them until there comes a time where she has to take them out. Which will happen eventually, school swimming lessons being the most likely place.

I haven’t taken mine out for about 10 years. They are still fine

Were they done with a needle and medical grade titanium by a proper piercer? Or with a gun with some coated nickel by a teenager in a hair dresser? If the latter they probably need changing for something decent, if the former leave them in.

Parakeetamol · 11/10/2023 19:55

Just use a cotton bud with some earring cleansing stuff to clean around them if they're needing a clean.

angelopal · 11/10/2023 19:57

If it's studs just make sure you can rotate them to make sure they are not stuck.

DaisyMaisyFaisy · 11/10/2023 20:04

As long as they are nice and clean it’s fine

I use micellar water on mine which also removes any bits of hair spray. My daiths been in coming up to two years now OP, other will have been in for months I only remove to change the jewellery

C152 · 11/10/2023 20:56

I think you might have misunderstood, OP. Earrings need to stay in for a certain period after the ears have first been pierced, to stop the holes closing up again (at least, that's what I was told). During the first 6 weeks you're supposed to put whatever antiseptic liquid the ear piercer supplied so the new holes don't get infected. After that, you can leave the earings in or take them out, as you wish. I've had mine in since I was a child (not the exact same earrings!) and have never had an infection from them.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 11/10/2023 21:13

My DD has only just started to take hers out and she had them done a year ago. They had to be taken out a couple of months after being done as hair got trapped around one of them and then it got pushed too far in (by me) so we had to go to a tattoo place to get it out. So she understandably didn't want any faffing after that. She can do then herself now but the first time I had to take them out she was screaming that much I'm surprised the police weren't called.

No because you usually have to do the regular turns and use the ointment etc don't you, so that prevents infection etc. So it should be ok

crumblingschools · 11/10/2023 22:14

Maybe she was too young to have them done if she can’t cope with the idea of taking them out

2023shady · 11/10/2023 23:07

I have 3 lobe piercings all with hoops in. They've been in for 6 years. And only came out in 2017 as I had to have an MRI!

Fifthtimelucky · 11/10/2023 23:10

I'm surprised her school hasn't insisted that she take them out for PE.

Do they just put a plaster over her ear lobe?

CherrySocks · 11/10/2023 23:35

Buy her a new pair?
Get someone else to demonstrate how they take theirs out without it hurting?
Buy a type with bent wire rather than the butterfly stop thing at back - I have some of the latter which do hurt to take out because they are stiff and the back thing fits in the notch too well and it pulls on the lobe.

octodrive · 11/10/2023 23:36

She's only supposed to keep them in for 6 weeks.

I have read this before in a very similar thread about a child not wanting to take their earrings out, but it was an infected ear.

Why do you think they were to be removed after 6 week?

This. Perhaps she really likes them. No need to change them.

Exactly what I was thinking. Regardless of whether the earrings actually do need to come out or not, her mum was telling her they did, so there's a real immaturity in her refusal.
