Spider Angioma/Spider Naevi

DD has a Spider Angioma on her cheekbone. It's been there for 4 years.

It doesn't cause any other issues, but it is extremely obvious and she's recently become very conscious of it and has asked if it can be treated.

Because it's cosmetic, we'll need to go private, and that's fine - but I don't know what specialty we need to refer to.

Can anyone tell me whether it would be dermatology or cosmetic surgery?

How old is she? My DH had one removed by laser but it was very painful. He saw a dermatologist.

Twitch45 · 02/08/2023 17:47

How old is she?
DS1 had a couple on his face. I took him to the GP when he was 7 and GP said they would be gone by the time he was 14. He's 13 now and they have been gone for a while with no scar or mark left behind...

LancreWowhawk · 02/08/2023 20:57

Ah, she is only 8. Maybe it will be too much for her at the moment?

Other kids have started to comment and it's upsetting her.

Could you use a few dabs of green concealer to cover them?

StuntNun · 04/08/2023 07:54

I don't think my 8-year-old would be able to deal with it. You might have to wait until she's a teenager. Or if it's really obvious and causing comments, maybe the summer between primary and secondary school. I had eczema as a child and had a few unkind comments about my skin; it can be very distressing.

DS2 has a spider angioma on his cheek, which appeared about 3 or 4 years ago. I asked about it when he was at the GP surgery about something else and the nurse just happened to be a former employee in the dermatology dept at our local hospital. She said that she saw them fairly often and that it would likely self resolve by the time he was in his mid teens. He's almost 11 and I definitely think it has faded. He hates it!

LancreWowhawk · 04/08/2023 13:37

Yes, this is the problem. I completely understand that there are so very many worse things that she could be having to deal with, but she absolutely hates it. It's been there 4 years already and counting. I'd love to be able to fix it for her, but I strongly suspect that I can't and that breaks my heart a bit.

LancreWowhawk- I totally understand your distress. My dd age 9 has had spider veins below each eye for 18 months now. We finally got a hospital referral and after waiting 6 months we have just found out we have been rejected. This referral was for laser treatment. It also breaks my heart that there is seemingly nothing I can do to help and the thought of having to wait years for them to go is awful. I do also though almost feel guilty for making such a fuss as she is totally healthy and it's probably not a big deal in the grand scheme of things but it does get me down x

Puddlelane123 · 04/08/2023 22:05

Could you try concealing it with Vichy Dermablend Camoflage Concealer (they do a standard one and a medical grade one which lasts 14+ hours and is waterproof). I have seen it used to excellent effect on people with various scars / facial differences such as port wine stains and it can be absolutely transformative. I know many will say that your daughter shouldnt see it as an imperfection or be made to feel like she needs to cover it up or change herself in any way, but the reality is that she is clearly upset by it and this would be alot less invasive than laser surgery etc. Worth thinking about OP.

Hi,
I totally understand how you feel. My 8 year old son has these spider veins on his cheek. They developed after chickenpox, he had a very bid spot on his cheek and it obviously injured the skin and left these red lines. It's been a year now and GP was of no help. I think another one has developed and I'm so worried they are going to spread across his cheek. Any advice 🙏

ficon · 10/06/2024 22:25

Hi,
It's great to hear the spider veins cleared up on your child. My 8 year old got them as a result of chickenpox. Did you use anything on them? I think they are spreading on my son and I'm very worried they will spread across his face

AAAA44 · 17/06/2024 20:19

Did you use anything on it to get rid of the spider angioma?

AAAA44 · 21/06/2024 21:43

I am very worried my daughter has one any advise would be helpful thank you.

ficon · 22/06/2024 08:52

No I haven't used anything, GP just say it's cosmetic and there's nothing that can be done except laser but I'm not doing that for a child. I'm still hoping someone might have some advice suggestions of how to help them fade or prevent more coming. Please comment if you have any experience or knowledge of this.

DD had a large one of these in her forehead that looked like a bindi. It appeared when she was small and i realised the other day that about 8 years on it’s totally disappeared.

Caferouge · 22/06/2024 09:07

My child had one but it disappeared before they turned 11.

ficon · 22/06/2024 20:05

Hi, can I ask everyone if anything caused the spider veins or did it just appear for no reason?

Swollenandgrouchy · 22/06/2024 20:09

I had one on my nose and had it removed with a single IPL treatment.

Pigeonqueen · 22/06/2024 20:18

I have one on my cheek and I had laser treatment for it when I was about 8 - I’m 43 now. I don’t remember much about it helping get rid of it, it just seemed very painful and being honest I think my Mum was more bothered about it than I was (I know that’s not the case here). It came back afterwards too so either I don’t think it was done well or maybe there’s a chance of that happening? Concealer is the way to go. Dermablend as others have said if she really wants to cover it up.

AAAA44 · 23/06/2024 20:54

Do you think it will just clear up when she hits puberty?

LancreWowhawk · 24/06/2024 09:48

I didn't realise there had been a lot more comments, so I thought I would update. We saw a dermatologist privately, who confirmed it's a spider angioma. He said it could quickly and easily be resolved with laser treatment, and that it would be uncomfortable rather than painful. However, because it is very close to her eye, they would have to restrain her head quite firmly to make sure she didn't move. We discussed it with DD, and she didn't like the idea, so we've put treatment on hold until she either raises it again, or it resolves naturally.

We're nearly a year on from my original post, and she hasn't mentioned it, but neither has it faded yet.

How do you stop worrying about it I just won't it gone any advice so you think they are caused by hormones? My daughter is 12.

AAAA44 · 26/06/2024 19:42

Is there any cream you can use to help?

ficon · 26/06/2024 22:46

I'd love to know of a cream or natural remedy that could help. It's horrible not being able to do anything to help my child

AAAA44 · 28/06/2024 19:52

Should it clear up by it's self?
