4 YO screaming with abdominal pains

Hello,

Not really sure why I'm posting here but probably just looking for some guidance.

Thursday night my DS4 woke up around midnight crying with pains "in his belly button" kept waking at around 45 min intervals until he started screaming with it at 5am. Off to A&E we went. We were the only ones there so were in and out within half an hour with 'probable stomach bug'.

He's been the same since, all through yesterday so phoned GP who called me and said plenty of rest and pain killers.

He's been taking paracetamol suppositories every 4h and kind of taking ibuprofen in between but really struggles taking oral tablets.

He's screaming/ crying out in pain. Would you take him back to A&E? Watch and wait?

Thanks in advance

@MollyRover Thank you for asking. He's been fine all day, really quite chirpy and mostly back to himself. He did start complying again at about 5pm but has been asleep since 5:30. Definitely much better than yesterday that's for sure!

I'm so glad he's feeling better

Polkadotpjs · 03/07/2023 10:39

Thanks. Ultimately he's been diagnosed coeliac and we think it was a flare of some sort. How is your little one today?

SofiaAmes · 03/07/2023 18:04

What a relief that you got a diagnosis! Celiac isn't great, but is so much more manageable when you know what it is. And often misdiagnosed, so it's great that you got the diagnosis this early on!

Update: started complaining of pain again yesterday, woke in night with it again and been pretty lethargic and intermittently complaining again today (plus keep going to be sick but not actually going). Called 111 9am and advised a HC Professional will call within 6h so I'm awaiting that. If it was a bug surely it would've subsided by now . @MollyRover I'm beginning to worry about what you said it could be due to your experiences. I think I may ask OOH GP for a scan or hot clinic referral maybe?

Definitely ask for the ultrasound, don't leave without one, mention intussusception and Mechels Diverticulum.

katem98 · 09/07/2023 10:18

@MollyRover Thank you. We spoke to OOH GP last night. He was very convinced over the phone and video chat that it isn't what your DC experienced. I am taking him back to A&E today as he's screaming again. I will really push for ultrasound before they want to take more bloods as that was pretty traumatic last time!

Out of hours GP thinks an abscess on his appendix. I am taking him to A&E now.

I had a Meckles Divertculum diagnosed and operated on as an emergency in my 30s.... never found anyone else who'd heard of it!

Hope OPs DS gets symptoms properly investigated... it's been going on a while now.

Olivia199 · 09/07/2023 12:36

Hope all is okay OP, and with that potential diagnosis you should at least get a scan! Thinking of you both.

katem98 · 09/07/2023 15:38

We've just left. They had a good feel of his tummy and doc said he's 99% sure not anything to do with appendix. Also worth mentioning my DD and DP now have gastro bugs which probably explains the whole situation.

OP posts:
MollyRover · 09/07/2023 20:20

@katem98 they've sent you home without any answers again? If it was gastro surely he would have obvious symptoms?

katem98 · 09/07/2023 20:22

@MollyRover Their reasoning was the now temperatures, sickness, diarrhoea and family members now also having these same symptoms.

OP posts:
MollyRover · 09/07/2023 20:23

@allnewname wow, did you have any symptoms throughout your life? Can't believe you would have made it so long without serious difficulties Shock

MollyRover · 09/07/2023 20:24

@katem98 I just think that it's going on too long for it to be gastro. In any case I hope he feels better soon, the poor little thing Flowers

katem98 · 09/07/2023 20:26

@MollyRover Hmm, believe me it is stressing me out. I do work in a GP surgery and one of theGPs said it's not unusual for the symptoms to last up to 2 weeks and even longer if they were right about the suspected swollen abdomen lymph node (also just learned this is a problem in my partners side of the family, although not immediate family).

How is your DS now @katem98? hopefully it was just a stomach bug and he’s doing much better now x

Fraaahnces · 16/07/2023 15:37

Get them to check his testicles. Torsion can manifest this way.

katem98 · 16/07/2023 16:08

Thanks for asking, @Boatshoes! He's absolutely fine now. All in all, it went on for 14 days. It was horrible but yes, definitely all fit with a gastro bug in the end.

OP posts:
katem98 · 16/07/2023 16:08

@Fraaahnces Yes, he had his testicles checked a couple of times.

OP posts:
Fraaahnces · 18/07/2023 08:22

That’s a relief. This has happened to two of my friend’s boys and it’s horrible. (They checked with ultrasound)
