4 YO screaming with abdominal pains

Hello,

Not really sure why I'm posting here but probably just looking for some guidance.

Thursday night my DS4 woke up around midnight crying with pains "in his belly button" kept waking at around 45 min intervals until he started screaming with it at 5am. Off to A&E we went. We were the only ones there so were in and out within half an hour with 'probable stomach bug'.

He's been the same since, all through yesterday so phoned GP who called me and said plenty of rest and pain killers.

He's been taking paracetamol suppositories every 4h and kind of taking ibuprofen in between but really struggles taking oral tablets.

He's screaming/ crying out in pain. Would you take him back to A&E? Watch and wait?

Thanks in advance

I'm thinking appendix but there's also something where the glands in the stomach swell up and cause pain, my dd had this and it was really painful and the Drs thought it was her appendix.

katem98 · 01/07/2023 16:59

@Girliefriendlikespuppies Yes. I think it's more likely to be this if I'm honest but I'm not a doctor!

@katem98 I don't want to scare you, honestly. We're out the other side now and everything is fine but do get the ultrasound.

katem98 · 01/07/2023 18:36

@MollyRover Thanks.

He's been cannulated and had bloods done. We're waiting for results and review by the surgical team.

@katem98 that is great that he is having bloods done - will give an indication if it is appendicitis.

Hope they have also given some pain relief?

katem98 · 01/07/2023 18:57

@SpringOn. They haven't yet. They said they will prescribe some more suppositories so that's good as they cost me £75 last time!

Is he more comfortable with his knees folded up? That and my lack of appetite as well as the pain were my main indicators of appendicitis.

Hope he is ok!!

katem98 · 01/07/2023 21:00

All bloods look normal inc CRP which is reading a 1.

Has he had any viruses recently @katem98?

katem98 · 01/07/2023 21:04

@MollyRover No none

What about an ultrasound?

katem98 · 01/07/2023 21:06

@MollyRover He hasn't had one, just the bloods.

@MollyRover Please tell me. I'm a huge sufferer of anxiety and would really rather know what's on your mind or I'll fixate!

Is he still having pain? I would push for the ultrasound if you can, especially if bloods are normal.

Make sure you're getting enough to eat and drink too, and some rest if you can xx

katem98 · 01/07/2023 21:09

@MollyRover He has been asleep for 2h. Not complained or woke up with it at all. The pain is intermittent.

My DC presented the same, they checked for appendicitis but following ultrasound suspected something called intussusception. Has your DC had these symptoms before?

katem98 · 01/07/2023 21:14

@MollyRover Thank you for sharing. I'm glad you're out the other end now. I've just googled symptoms and some fit but many don't. He's been opening his bowels normally etc. no not had these symptoms as such before. The doc is due to come around though so I will ask, thank you for that.

My DC had symptoms (only symptom in our case was severe pain) for about 12 hours 8 months ago after a virus, then nothing until a month ago after another virus. It was a bit more complicated than intussusception in the end but the fact that DC could be completely symptom free for so long in between makes me wonder. Wishing you the best outcome Flowers

Do migraines run in the family? My ds had this type of pain periodically as a young child and it turned out to be abdominal migraines, but wasn't diagnosed until he was 8 or 9 and had had head migraines diagnosed first and then they finally figured out that it was probably abdominal migraines. When we gave him the medication for the head migraines, the tummy pain cleared up, so that's how he finally got the correct diagnosis.

katem98 · 02/07/2023 05:54

@SofiaAmes Funny you should say that. I suffered horribly with stomach migraines as a child! I've never met anyone who even knows they exist!

Poor thing. I hope you get answers soon. We were in with my DS but his pains weren't as severe. He had some sort of infection. And had a few days of antibiotics. Has he a temp?

katem98 · 02/07/2023 06:05

@Polkadotpjs I hope your DS is better now. Absolutely no temp at all.

There is a lot more awareness of abdominal migraines these days. Please make sure you tell the doctors that you used to have them AND get a consult with a neurologist. Migraines are inherited and it could well be what he has, but it's rare enough that it won't be their first diagnosis unless they know that you got them as a child.

katem98 · 02/07/2023 08:39

@SofiaAmes Thank you. It didn't even cross my mind if I'm honest. Mine would only last 2 days max but I do remember rolling around on the floor asking my mum if I was going to die.

@katem98 how's he doing now?
