Myopia Management

Hi there

My son is short sighted and 5 years old. Have recently been recommended to try myopia management.

I was going to do some shopping around to see what is a good price for the lenses (in glasses). Miyo-smart seem to be quite
popular although wondering if they are ok for 5 year olds

Anyone else in a similar boat and advise on whether they went for a high street or private opticians?

Any advice appreciated

Thanks

My dd got myosmart lenses about 8 months ago. We used to be with Boots opticians for check ups, but they weren't doing the lenses at the time, just the contact lenses, so we went with an independent. £300 for the lenses, checkups every 6 months, if the prescription has changed at the 6 months we get free replacement lenses. My dd had just turned 8 when we got them. Can't see why they wouldn't be ok for a 5 year old, unless they lose them. They are meant to be really durable so hopefully they won't break.

Thank you for sharing. Very useful. Would you be able to share if your daughter is nearsighted and what the prescription is? I've heard there's an ideal prescription to try this but I can't find what that ideal prescription is. Any help would be gratefully received. And I hope the glasses have helped your daughter.

the slight worry with a 5 year old is that Myiosmart does cause peripheral blur and a 5 year old is still within the time frame where they could develop amblyopia so at that age you want the image on the retina to be as clear as possible. But developing myopia at that young an age is also a concern.

Are you getting him to spend a chunk of time outside every day and limiting close screen use?

@Seekinginfolady the clinical trials were done on prescriptions up to around -5.50. But they are available in a higher RX.

Thanks so much

My dd prescription is
Right: minus 1.25
Left: minus 1

So not too bad but the optician said with her being young, her eyes will get worse as she grows & the glasses will slow the progression

Both my DC are myopic. DS is currently - 15 and DD is - 9.5. We tried hard contact lenses for DS for a year but he could not tolerate them and it became traumatic. Plus, difficult to see if they slowed the progression of myopia or not. Currently using regular lenses in glasses at home and soft contacts for school. Works well but DS has started puberty and his eyes are getting worse.

Hi! This is a problem that also affects my son, he sits for many hours doing his homework or at the PC. I've heard about a product with sensors to be placed on the desk that emits a voice that reminds the child to keep a proper posture every time he bends over the desk and also reminds him to turn on the light whenever the environment gets too dark. This sounds very interesting, as it covers precisely the two main causes of myopia. What do you think about it? It could be very useful in my opinion...

@Veronica19 is the actual close work that can cause a physiological response in the eye to become more myopic, not posture or the intensity of light. He needs to be having plenty of regular breaks and also spending at least an hour or two outside everyday
