Hi my 2 year old son has been unwell for a while reoccurring temps, crying in pain and laying around. I went through 111 yesterday evening sent us to a&e was sent home told it was viral. Child hasn’t eaten in 3 days and refusing all liquids for the last 28 hours just syringe a couple times but was an absolute fight to do so, went to urgent care this morning sent home again saying it’s viral. He hasn’t moved off the sofa or spoken all day, he’s dribbling his saliva or holding it in and refusing to swallow half the time. I just cannot get fluids into him he’s a had a couple wet nappies but nothing major or normal for us. What do I do! Something is telling me there’s more going on.

Trust your gut. Go back.

IndiganDop · 27/02/2023 19:43

48 hours without drinking, definitely go back.

EllaMaeMc · 27/02/2023 19:46

He also has a rash inside of his mouth that they didn’t pay much regard to… every time he tries to sleep every ten mins he’s wimpering and crying saying ow. I feel like I was fobbed off, I’m scared to go back and just be labelled an hysterical mother I feel they are never understanding.

Go back OP, and you need to force some fluids down him now - use a calpol syringe and apple juice

I’ve been trying the syringe method he’s chokes spits up and screams, he’s taken a couple but I’ve had to literally pin his arms down and pry his mouth open, it’s awful I feel horrible.

If he can't swallow his saliva he may have a peritonsil abscess or bad tonsillitis. Take him back to A&E.

thaegumathteth · 27/02/2023 19:54

This is how my daughters been with scarlet fever and throat infections. How's his temp now? It's good in a way that he has the energy to fight you re the liquids but you obviously need him to drink for dehydration

miraveille · 27/02/2023 20:01

Go back and don't leave until they treat him. If it's viral as they say ask them what virus it is. Viruses have treatments too to alleviate symptoms.

Justmemyselfandi999 · 27/02/2023 20:15

Have you tried ice lollies?

Thea91 · 27/02/2023 20:21

Go back to hospital. I hope he is on the mend soon. Don't feel silly you know him best and if your worried take him back. When my son had tonsillitis in one day I went the GP , called 111 and took him to a&e as I knew he wasn't right . I had to keep pushing in a&e a pediatric Dr finally seen him looked in his throat and took his temp, she said it was bad bacterial tonsillitis. Hope he's on the mend soon x

Lolacat1234 · 27/02/2023 20:23

I'm sure they probably looked in his throat but when my daughter had this last week, the dribbling and not being able to swallow it was tonsillitis? If you're gut is telling you something listen to it, take him back x

Springintoabetterlife · 27/02/2023 21:23

Go back. Things have changed. The paediatrician at our A and E always comes back if your worried.

Chubbycheeks0203 · 27/02/2023 21:36

Does he have a rash anywhere? My 2 year old had hand, foot and mouth a few months ago and he wouldn't eat anything. His rash was mainly on his face but also had some spots on his tongue. Definitely go back and push to see docs. Good luck x

Ihavekids · 27/02/2023 21:43

Another suggestion for Hand Foot and Mouth. When my son had it he stopped eating and drinking for a few days and the rash was painful before blisters appeared. They may be just about to appear for you too.
Regardless, if your kid really has had that little to drink then they need to go back to a and e. Sorry.
Hope he feels better soon.

DutifulDaughterWifeMother · 27/02/2023 21:45

OP, trust your instincts & take him back and make sure they look at him properly. Hope he gets better soon x

StampOnTheGround · 27/02/2023 21:45

Go back! We had something similar recently and they tested DS blood sugar which was extremely low from not eating (and also vomiting what he had had!).

StampOnTheGround · 27/02/2023 21:46

Also, we had been to A&E 4 days prior and the doctors 2 days before - don't worry about going back!

nocoolnamesleft · 27/02/2023 22:28

Sounds like he needs some difflam spray, so his mouth feels better, so he can drink. Brilliant stuff. I wouldn't care about not eating, but not drinking matters.

Artemis20 · 27/02/2023 22:34

i think there’s a nasty virus going around.

Try difflam, calpol and ibuprofen. It’s hard but you’re just going to have to restrain him and keep his mouth closed when the calpol goes in.

Give it 20 mins or so after pain meds and see if he can have an ice lolly / some sips of water or juice.

If he’s not getting better I’d go back as you might need antibiotics.

Copperoliverbear · 27/02/2023 22:38

Have you got another hospital you could go to nearby. X

Emmamoo89 · 27/02/2023 22:38

Definitely go back. Hope he gets better soon x

We’ve been using difflam for 2 days no budge on getting him to drink

Will he have an ice lolly or yoghurt? Something cold?

You're worried enough to post here so I'd push for him to be seen again.

Rachaelrachael · 27/02/2023 22:49

Definitely go back. I'd be really worried about dehydration. I hope he's feeling better soon!

caffelattetogo · 27/02/2023 22:51

Could it be tonsillitis/scarlet fever - there's a lot of strep A around at the moment. Even if not, he might need IV fluids. Please take him back. I hope he feels better soon.
