Hi my 2 year old son has been unwell for a while reoccurring temps, crying in pain and laying around. I went through 111 yesterday evening sent us to a&e was sent home told it was viral. Child hasn’t eaten in 3 days and refusing all liquids for the last 28 hours just syringe a couple times but was an absolute fight to do so, went to urgent care this morning sent home again saying it’s viral. He hasn’t moved off the sofa or spoken all day, he’s dribbling his saliva or holding it in and refusing to swallow half the time. I just cannot get fluids into him he’s a had a couple wet nappies but nothing major or normal for us. What do I do! Something is telling me there’s more going on.

Yes my daughter also did a lot of spitting/dribbling when she had scarlet fever, she said she had a yukky taste. I understand the not wanting to be seen as hysterical as I tend towards thinking like this too, but honestly stand back. Who gives a fuck if anyone thinks that of you? It’s not true, you are a concerned mum with a child who is likely to become dehydrated swiftly at this rate. The worst thing that can happen is you getting sent away again.

nocoolnamesleft · 27/02/2023 22:57

Oh dear. What's his urine output like? Is he looking dehydrated?

Have you tried ice lollies?

Another vote for lollies. DS used to get horrible viral throat infections and could not swallow/drink etc. the only thing that ever worked was an ice lolly. After that he was calm enough to take some painkillers.

But I do agree with others - trust your gut if you feel he needs seen again.

SausageMonkey2 · 27/02/2023 23:39

Another vote for ice lollies. Apple juice and a syringe. 5ml every 10 mins is what they gave my kid in a similar situation as they were worried about dehydration etc. she ended up on a drip overnight.

samqueens · 28/02/2023 00:37

Agree - you should go back. A&E docs always say they’d rather see a worried parent with a not seriously ill child, than miss seeing one who does need their help. Throat infections can become serious so it’s worth checking out, especially if he is very unwell/unhappy in himself.
Hope you manage to get seen sharpish, and that your little one is on the mend soon.

How are things today OP? X

The majority of paediatric admissions to hospital in the winter are due to viruses. Viruses can be serious.

iloveyankeecandle · 28/02/2023 19:46

Big hugs to you. My friends child has been like this and was poorly for days but is on the mend now.

YukoandHiro · 28/02/2023 19:47

Go back and say you've brought him because he can't take liquids

YukoandHiro · 28/02/2023 19:48

Just seen you've had an ambulance out - really hope you get some answers and proper support soon.

ltscoldonthesidelines · 28/02/2023 19:52

I very much hope you get to the bottom of this horrid illness, your poor son. You must be sick with worry.

caffelattetogo · 27/02/2023 22:51

Could it be tonsillitis/scarlet fever - there's a lot of strep A around at the moment. Even if not, he might need IV fluids. Please take him back. I hope he feels better soon.

My son was like this with tonsillitis which he got regularly. Spitting instead of swallowing and I was told viral every time I took him. Sent him to the doctors with his dad who came back with antibiotics and a referral for removal 🙄 Don't get fobbed off xxx

notthisagainforest · 28/02/2023 20:05

You need to get calpol into him to make drinking more comfortable. Have you tried ice lollies

Itsrudemeghan · 28/02/2023 20:24

Honestly I’m so angry, he’s being kept now for a chest infection severe tonsillitis, low blood sugar and dehydration. I told them 5 days ago it’s not just a normal cold, and I had to have an ambulance for my poor baby to believed and listened to properly

poppylock · 28/02/2023 22:21

I'm so pleased he's finally getting the treatment he needs. So many children are dismissed and then it turns into sepsis, honestly boils my blood.

Hope your boy has a speedy recovery

samqueens · 01/03/2023 01:09

So glad he’s getting medical attention now - never be put off from going back. Well done for hanging in there - I hope he is feeling much better soon 💐💐

RogersOrganismicProcess · 01/03/2023 03:19

Hope he picks up quickly op. Thank goodness you are being listened too.

tobi21 · 01/03/2023 07:16

How awful being fobbed off like that. Wishing your LO a speedy discovery Flowers
