Under her iris there is an off white line, about 1 mm thick, just below not all round, white of eye is blood shot under it, she says it’s a bit sore and she can see fine.

Google has drawn a blank, feel she needs to see someone, not sure GP or optician, not sure how urgent it is? Any ideas?

Could you possibly get a picture?

frazzle66 · 05/01/2023 20:08

Call her opticians she goes to and they will fill in a triage form, optician will then call and give advice, tell you to go to drs or ask you to come in or even hospital if needed x

N0tfinished · 05/01/2023 20:10

Optician would be a good start, possibly more accessible right now- at least could reassure you or support your case for doc appointment

watchfulwishes · 05/01/2023 20:11

Unless you think it needs attention tonight, I would go to the optician first thing tomorrow, because you will get seen more quickly. The optician can refer.

Redebs · 05/01/2023 20:12

She needs to be seen by doctor.
Eye infections are potentially serious.
Does she have a temperature?

watchfulwishes · 05/01/2023 20:13

I was just wondering if you should ring 111 as eyes are so weird - NHS advice does say to call 111 if 'worried' I assume because eyes are so easily damaged.

wonderstuff · 05/01/2023 20:14

No temperature, she’s fine in herself, no vision issues.

Our local hospital has an eye A&E that you can just turn up at. Maybe yours does.

Hi there. Have a look at iritis. If you google it, the photos are extreme, but mine didnt quite look as bad as that. I used to get this and it made my iris mis-shapen, so could look like there was a thicker edge at the most affected parts. Id go to GP and they would send me to the hospital with an eye department. Id then be prescribed steroid eye drops. I dont seem to get it any more thankfully. Good luck

wonderstuff · 05/01/2023 20:18

dont feel it’s an a&e issue, we’d probably not be seen until morning anyway. Will call optician in the morning.

(Anterior/intermediatary) uvetitis?

KirstenBlest · 05/01/2023 20:21

uveitis

Allycat · 05/01/2023 20:21

This is kind of what it looks like...

KirstenBlest · 05/01/2023 20:23

from my ophthalmolgist expertise (i.e a quick search only)
i'd say iritis

wonderstuff · 05/01/2023 20:25

Thanks all, that does seem to fit, wish me luck getting a GP appointment! Relief it doesn’t seem to be very serious!

PrincessW11 · 05/01/2023 20:29

May also be marginal keratitis in which case she's need topical antibiotics & steroids. With iritis she'd be very sensitive to light

Xrays · 05/01/2023 20:34

As someone with multiple retinal issues etc you will be better off seeing an optician rather than a doctor. A doctor won’t have the correct equipment to examine the eye correctly. If you need the eye clinic at your nearest hospital the optician can make the arrangements. A doctor can usually only diagnose superficial eye infections - something like this will probably need eye drops to anaesthetise the eye and dilate the pupils and then a proper look at the front and back of the eye with ophthalmological equipment.

wonderstuff · 05/01/2023 20:38

Okay, will call opticians first. Having children is so stressful, you don’t think when you’re planning a family of all the hundreds of ways they worry you!

Definitely go via an optician. I had a small issue with my eye a couple years ago and got referred to an eye hospital for it through the optician. They can also do quite a few tests on site usually also.

Johnnyripples · 05/01/2023 20:47

Definitely go to an optician, I went to one when I had an eye injury and he referred me on. At the time I didn't wear glasses so hadn't realised they are far better at diagnosing eye problems than a gp.

gogohmm · 05/01/2023 20:53

For eyes unless an absolute emergency the best option is eye a&e (which is generally open Mon-fri 9-5!) eye hospitals are only in major cities otherwise go to any high street optician who are trained to spot things that require an ophthalmologist, and can refer to the hospital clinic as needed

wonderstuff · 05/01/2023 20:58

I’ve got eye test booked for tomorrow morning so hopefully they will be able to shed some light or refer us. No idea where my nearest eye a+e would be, I know a friend who lives locally went to moorefields for detached retina so maybe that’s nearest? We’re near Basingstoke.

Definitely get an optician to see asap to be in the safe side. They can refer you urgently if it needs reviewing.

I have a thing called a Pinguecula that I’ve had on my eye since early childhood. I think they are more commonly on the nose side of the eye, but I like to be different, and mine is on the ear side. It slightly covers my iris. Its grown very slightly over the years, but has not got big enough to ever cause vision issues. It’s not anything my optician is concerned about so long as it doesn’t get so big it blocks my view. I’ve tried to get a decent photo of it, but my skills are slightly rubbish, and I’m home alone. It can sometimes look quite bloodshot when I’m tired or if my eye is irritated.

Call optician first thing for an emergency appointment. Don't mess around with GP, who will refer you to optician anyway.

Are you in London? Contact Moorfields Eye Hospital if you can get there. They open at 5am, I think. I've been there several times and they are first class.
