Help with identifying rash? Worried? SF?!

Waiting for a callback from 111 although I called them at 11am and they said it could take 14 hours.. DD has had a rash/this on her belly for about a week and has had a temperature around 39 for the last 3 days. As soon as calpol and nurofen is out of her system her temp shoots back up and she says her body hurts and becomes very upset also tells me she's freezing even though she's burning up. Obviously with the amount of scarlet fever around im now worrying.. maybe unnecessarily. Has anyones child ever had a rash like this and what was it please.. it itches her and feels like sandpaper. No changes in the house or allergen wise.

Take her to go get seen.

HTruffle · 03/12/2022 22:44

I’ve no experience sorry but I would take her in given the rise in cases, I am sure she will be fine but best to get checked.

unambiguousbeard · 03/12/2022 23:16

My daughter has had scarlet fever twice and this is the same kind of rash. Feels like sandpaper. Please don’t panic (I know that’s not helpful) it’s not necessarily a serious illness but she will need antibiotics. Dd was quite ill but not seriously ill and I’m sure yours will be the same

HattyBatty · 03/12/2022 23:24

My son has the same rash although he hasn’t had a temperature. I was wondering why his eczema was flaring for no reason but it isn’t eczema is it 😣

Insheerpanic · 03/12/2022 23:44

111 just rang back and said it would be another 4 hours. Shes waking up crying. Taking her to a and e. Hoping were not time wasting but can't deal with the worry bugger it. I convinced myself it was nothing as the rash doesn't really have colour but something is screaming at me to go get her seen and she isn't getting any better. I know 111 are overwhelmed as is our nhs but its been 12 hours since i rang them about my poorly 3 year old and nothing its scary.

8 hour wait at childrens a and e. How bloody scary.

PineappleVision · 04/12/2022 03:41

I take it you’re at A&E now? Yes it does look like the rash. How are her tonsils? I hope she gets seen soon.

Insheerpanic · 04/12/2022 03:45

Yes. Been here 4 hours and no movement in waiting room its like a horror movie children screaming and rammed. So scary.

OP posts:
minipie · 04/12/2022 03:51

Yes that is what DD looked like with scarlet fever. Antibiotics will sort it.

SF is highly contagious. If she can wait till tomorrow then it would be a lot better (for her and everyone in the waiting room) to get her out of A&E and get seen by the GP tomorrow. Or look into out of hours GP for tonight.

Hope you can get her the ABs soon either way.

DD at 11 months old had this rash. The next day it was red & blotchy & didn't blanch under the glass test.
Rang our GP who told us to come straight over. The GP rang Paediatrics at our local hospital to get DD admitted.
I wasn't worried it was meningitis but I knew it wasn't something quite right as her tongue & cheeks were bright red, her legs & hands had gone puffy & she was lethargic.
Anyway got her to her hospital & she was put on antibiotics as it was confirmed that she had Strep A.
She spent a day & night in hospital (more to keep an eye on her) & then we went home with a weeks worth of antibiotics & strict instructions to call the hospital if we were worried.

It was a very stressful time as I'd only been back at work 2 weeks after maternity leave finished.

Insheerpanic · 04/12/2022 03:57

Really worried now and feel awful shes had the rash for about a week but because it wasn't like sunburn or anything and I hadn't known about sf before the news she hadn't been seen. I feel awful. Guessing my one year old is now at major risk too. Not leaving a and e. Been trying to get medical help all day, waited 12 hours for a callback for them to say you can go a and e to be seen quicker, cancelled my dr callback and when I rang 111 back they said they wouldn't help us because we were at a and e. No way to access medical care on a weekend any other way. Shes 3 too so no online gp or any options. I wish I could take her home shes in pain, crying, can't sleep. Its hell. My priority is my child but my god the poor NHS staff really do feel like its going to collapse.

Bloody hell OP. It's a shambles. Your poor girl. Hope she's been seen now. You did the right thing. Hope she's got the treatmenr she meeds and you can both soon go home to bed.

Insheerpanic · 04/12/2022 04:13

I feel like such a shit shit mum. If it is sf judging by this thread it is and its been untreated so long what if its already damaged my little girl. I'm so bloody scared. I've nearly lost her twice already to sepsis. Been seen by a nurse and now a very long wait to see a dr

OP posts:
1Sky · 04/12/2022 04:35

You're not a shit mum. We're all conditioned to try and get them through viruses. No one can tell immediately whether it's bacterial. You're in the right place now. Make sure she's drinking fluids in the meantime and fingers crossed she'll be seen soon.

HattyBatty · 04/12/2022 07:54

Hope you’ve been seen OP and hope your LO is doing ok

Insheerpanic · 04/12/2022 08:19

Thankyou. 8 and a half hours and counting.. Still sat in the waiting room! There's someone here who's on 9 and a half hours too

packedlunchlife · 04/12/2022 09:07

Op I feel for you, you're doing the right thing by your dd though as awful as the waiting must be.
How is she ?
Have you been triaged or still waiting to be seen by someone ? Sorry if you've already said and I've missed it

Insheerpanic · 04/12/2022 11:57

We're home thank god. On watch for her deteriorating but shes got antibiotics, the dr said tonsillitis (said she had spots on her tonsils) but didn't rule out scarlet fever but didn't say it wasn't either.. so abit confusing but we have antibiotics anyway so should treat whatever it is. Shes so up and down. Just trying to keep her fluids up and medications and hopefully we'll see an improvement!

Justwingingitox · 04/12/2022 19:18

I hope she's a bit more settled at home now OP. I'm glad you got antibiotics in the end, be it a very long wait. X

Remmy123 · 04/12/2022 19:38

A&E will be rammed if people are going with a minor rash I can barely see it!

Potentially not just a minor rash though is it.. SF is killing children recently.
Understandably parents emotions/anxiety/stress is going to be heightened when everyone's talking about it/reading it or seeing it. Better to be safe than sorry IMO.

@Remmy123 shes had sepsis twice and nearly died. The a and e dr has told me go go straight back if she doesn't start tonimprove. It isn't just a rash you can't see or I wouldn't of gone. Were on day 5 of a temperature that's hard to get under control, shes not herself, shes fine one minute and screaming in pain the next. Shes 3 years old and the only way to get medical care was to go to a and e. I dont actually care if that wasn't the right thing to do it was the only way she could see a dr and start the treatment she needed. I will be going back if I need to as told to by the dr. Shes at risk of sepsis as the infection could go to her blood and having this twice previously makes it more dangerous for her. Sorry if that annoys you.
