DD 16 no period yet

Dd still hadn’t started her periods. She’s just 16. No health issues and all the other ‘signs’ are there. And have been for years really.
Ive tried to get her a GP appointment for the past year and I can’t even get past the receptionist. It’s not urgent enough. (Don’t even start me off on the appalling non existent service I get at the GP now).

I know she needs to see a GP, I know she needs blood tests but is there a non catastrophic reason she hasn’t started yet? I’ve gone from being vaguely concerned a couple of years ago to pretty worried now.

I was 16 and a half when I started; I was tiny, under 5 ft and only 5 stone something, so wouldn't worry yet.

My friend's DD started her period soon after turning 16. Very slim and also a dancer ( she's a ballet dancer now actually) . But she too was seen by her GP and had tests, scan etc done at the time, all was OK with her and her periods started not long after that

Quick update.
Got the tests results back last week. Blood tests and ultrasound. No obvious issues according to the GP though one reading was low. Referred to the gynaecologist for a more detailed check.

However… period started today. What a relief. Thanks to everyone for the advice.

Mine started at 15 before that she was under 6 stone.

sounds like a weight / fat issue

Weigh her (explain why) and work out her bmi. If it’s low eg 18 she may be a bit underweight. Dancing will definitely have an effect combined with being slim. Keep going with the gp - write a letter. Or change practice. Very slender DSD was 17 when her periods started. They investigated and weren’t concerned they said it was her low bmi. Still irregular as she’s so slim, she is tracking her cycle now as wants to conceive in next few years . I wouldn’t worry unduly .

JaninaDuszejko · 18/12/2022 12:57

I've already checked her DDs BMI on the NHS website and it's fine for a 16yo.

I've heard the weight thing before but DD1 is a size 4, 6st10lb and has been having periods since she was 13. She is only 4'11" though so she's on the 33rd percentile so 'heavier' than the OP's daughter who is below the 10th. It's probably more body fat than actual weight that's the key determinant. As long as it's just being sporty and so a low but healthy range weight then I think it's probably better for girls to start their periods later, my dds friends who started early have had more problematic attention from boys and men because they look older than their age.
