I really don't like the look of this?

I've just gone to bathe my toddler and seen this and I really don't like the look of this? I panicked meningitis but it doesn't look like that. Does it oook like finger bruises? That's really concerning to me too we carry him on shoulders but if it was from that/him bruising easily it would be on both legs. He goes to childcare so I'm worried there too. What does this look like?

Not sure whether I phone 111 or not. My husbands saying he bumped his shin on the patio doors yesterday, I do remember my son crying and mentioning it but that wouldn't leave a bruise that shape it surely? I'm really concerned someone's done this or it's something serious/illness related?

In all honesty that looks like fairly normal toddler bruises.
I wouldn't say finger bruises either-they've banged the front of their leg.

And one thing on meningitis (ds used to get non-fading rashes regularly) is that the rash is typically a later sign. I was told that by the time the rash comes out they normally would be obviously very ill. Don't wait to see if it's a rash if you think it's meningitis; get them to A&E asap.

That's not saying if they have a non-fading rash don't get it checked out (ds was always sent to have bloods done with his) but more do the other checks (light reaction-that's normal daylight, you don't need to stick a torch in their eyes; can they bend their neck-get them to kiss their knee; are they lethargic etc) if you have any thoughts of it being meningitis and don't think because they haven't got a rash they can't have it. Meningitis doesn't always give a rash as well as it being a later symptom.

That looks like someone is squeezing his legs too tight to stop him wriggling during nappy changes. DH managed this with one of ours once and I was not happy.

dementedpixie · 04/10/2022 19:02

Does he play football at nursery?
Looks like he's hit it off something

MrsLargeEmbodied · 04/10/2022 19:04

does he have bruising anywhere else
i remember being so concerned about the bruises of dd legs but there was no bruising anywhere else
i would visit HV

notsureabouttthis · 04/10/2022 19:41

No bruising anywhere else
He burst into tears for no reason around 1pm and when I asked why he said his head felt tight. We didn't know what he meant, I assumed a bit of a headache he drank some water and has been fine all day since but then I saw this and now I'm overthinking everything!
He doesn't wear nappies so there's no reason for anyone to of held him down Sad
He's always covered in bumps and bruises I've just never seen one quite like that, that dark and that size/shape.

notsureabouttthis · 04/10/2022 20:29

Call 111. It's what they are there for. Children are SUCH a worry but it's so often nothing. Hand hold.

lljkk · 04/10/2022 20:32

I'd lean towards fairly normal. Nothing you described is remarkable.

lljkk · 04/10/2022 20:33

How tall is your son? Because the picture makes his leg look like that of a quite large child.

notsureabouttthis · 04/10/2022 20:33

3 (just)

I guess I shouldn't say toddler anymore should I, he still feels like my little toddler!

I've got a 12 year old and a 6 year old.

Trust your gut - you are his mum! You know your child! You clearly aren't happy which is why you are reaching out.

I am a panicker (I always have been) but I was always told by a&e doctors that theyd rather see a panicked mum who can be reassure than a severely ill/dead child.

Or if not a&e, please call 111 and they can reassure you of what to do. 💐

babynoname22 · 04/10/2022 20:39

Hmm I get what you mean. As much as I want to say just normal bruising from a boisterous toddler I wouldn't like the look of it either as it looks quite big! Not sure what to do about it now thought if he is well in himself.

Blanketpolicy · 04/10/2022 20:39

It doesn't look like anything concerning to me.

Ds's shins and legs were always covered in bruises, mostly from boiterious play or walking into the same things over and over.

ChristmasAtHogwarts · 04/10/2022 20:41

My son gets lots of bruises when he plays on one particular bike. Turns out the pedal was repeatedly hitting his shin. Could it be something like that? An outdoor toy that he’s using a lot?

HorribleHerstory · 04/10/2022 20:42

I wouldn’t have given this a second glance, it would be totally normal for my bambi like children who are all legs and fall over or walk into things more often than they don’t. Especially between 1-10 years.

Bundlesofchocforme · 04/10/2022 20:44

My DD had bruises like that constantly at that age and I eventually worked out that it was where she bashed her legs every night on the bottom bar of the stair gate going up the stairs-might be worth going around the house at his height and seeing if you can see where he could have got them.

runningoutofidea · 04/10/2022 20:45

Looks like normal toddler bruising I would wait and see if it fades and no more appear over a few days just keep a closer eye to see if he’s bumping himself on anything etc

FatPatsCat · 04/10/2022 20:47

No medical advice here but looks like my DCs legs around the time she learned(learnt?) to ride a bike, has he done this recently?

If he’s well in himself though I’d weigh up the pros and cons - monitoring over a few more days is better I think. The flip side of a and e for this kind of thing is that they could take an over cautious safeguarding view and keep you in unnecessarily and do more tests to check for NAI as sadly this happens and they have to check but a lot of innocent families go through hell being subjected to the investigation

Blsp · 04/10/2022 20:51

Looks like my 3 year old when she's been on the trikes at nursery.

GAW19 · 04/10/2022 21:05

My little girl is 3, both her legs almost ALWAYS look like this. It's crazy how much stuff they can bang their legs on, stairs, chairs, kids table, baby gate, bike. I'm more surprised when I see my dd without these bruises.
Trust your gut, you know your child the best Flowers

lannistunut · 04/10/2022 21:09

Agree bike/trike pedals leave awful bruises.

I think you have to go with your gut instinct but are you worried it is meningitis ( or similar) or a non-accidental injury?
