Help- DD hysterical from threadworms

riotlady · 26/09/2022 19:56

Poor DD is 4 and has threadworms- we got her medication yesterday morning but she’s sobbing her eyes out from the itchiness tonight and I can still see worms coming out of her bottom. Should the medicine not have kicked in by now? Is there anything else I can do for her? Have been wiping with a flannel and applying a cream the pharmacist gave us but nothing seems to give her any relief and I feel awful for her

Oh bless her.
I've no solutions, but the medication will work given time.
I think all you maybe can do is what you're doing.

BoredOfGrey22 · 26/09/2022 20:08

I'd be tempted to just use toilet paper and not a flannel... surely you don't want to transfer anything onto the flannel which will have to go somewhere, other than down the loo.

Bath in the morning and clean her bottom With soap.

Hot wash all bedding and pyjamas after wearing once. If works are still there in a week she can have another dose I think.

In my experience they tend to clear up quite quickly after the first dose.

riotlady · 26/09/2022 20:11

Thanks both. I see your point about loo roll @BoredOfGrey22 , just thought a warm flannel would be more soothing when her bum is already irritated. Been chucking them in a plastic bag to boil wash

It can take a few days.

in the meantime bathing or showering in the morning is ideal to get rid of any eggs.

good hand hygiene, clean pjs every night, good household hygiene, hot wash bedding, wipe sides and vacuum etc etc. there are lots of other tips online.

have you treated the whole household? You really should.

plus re-treat in 10-14 days.

my DS had them a couple times around a similar age, thankfully he's 11 now and never had a reoccurrence!

Flapjack637 · 26/09/2022 20:13

I may be wrong but think a really thick layer of Vaseline around the anus is meant to help. I think the worms struggle to get through it if I recall correctly.
but ultimately agree with the other posters. Not much you can do until the meds kick in. Your poor DD.

eatyourcrustspls · 26/09/2022 20:13

I have read about putting Vaseline on their bottom to stop them laying eggs. Not sure if this is true though. I hope it passes soon, they are dreadful. Poor thing.

AdamRyan · 26/09/2022 20:14

They get more itchy when they are dying I've found so hopefully the worst will be over by morning. Poor DD.

Blossomandbee · 26/09/2022 20:15

Bless her, I would think the medicine takes a few days to work. It's got to get through her system and kill the worms, she might then pass dead ones after then.
Would a bath help the itchiness, or a thorough shower (I don't know how to word this) to help wash any worms or eggs away?
I'm sure I read that Vaseline can help with the itchiness too

Madamecastafiore · 26/09/2022 20:16

Antihistamine may help.

Mamette · 26/09/2022 20:17

What about sudocrem for the itchiness. I doubt they could move through that either.

riotlady · 26/09/2022 20:17

Yeah we’ve all had the tablets @User637473847737374 , me and DH haven’t had any symptoms (touch wood!!!) but the pharmacist said the same as you, to treat everyone at once

Hoping the itchier when dying thing is true- I tried to look for them when she first started complaining her bum was itchy and didn’t see any, tonight she’s crawling with them so really seems like they’ve gone nuts

Having a bath now could sooth the itching. I had to do that with my DD in the middle of the night once when she was so uncomfortable. It did help.

Applying vaseline afterwards also helped.

I hope the medicine works soon.

EspressoPatronumm · 26/09/2022 20:18

Have a bath, then Vaseline or sudodcrem thickly around the area.

Jojobees · 26/09/2022 20:18

A bath some antihistamine and Vaseline around her anus and vulva ( the bastards travel) should help her for tonight.

Museya15 · 26/09/2022 20:20

Wash the bed linen, give the bedroom and house a hoover, treat all of you. Bath her in the morning, health visitor told me not to shower her as the bottom soaks in the bath getting rid of the eggs laid during the night. Knickers at bedtime with pyjama bottoms, clean towels everyday for a week. It's how I got rid of them.

MumE78 · 26/09/2022 20:21

Wash everything, bedding, cloths & towels after each use for a few days

riotlady · 26/09/2022 20:23

Everything’s been washed and cleaned today, will do again tomorrow. She’s gone to sleep now but will probs be awake again in a couple of hours cos 10-12 seems to be the worst time

Yes this is what we did with my daughter. First give a bath and wipe down with a flannel. Then dry and put a shit ton of Vaseline on. It protects the skin from their stinging saliva or whatever it is that they excrete.

IsabelaYourBoyfriendsHere · 26/09/2022 20:27

Oh bless her, my eldest is five and was sobbing with itchiness from what I assume was threadworms last month (never found any of the buggers but we all got treated just in case)

Like others have said, I put aloe vera Vaseline on her bum and stopped the itchiness enough to help her fall asleep. Hope your DD can be soothed soon, it's horrible. 🙁

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 26/09/2022 20:29

Aloe Vera wipes are soothing and disposable.

JustFrustrated · 26/09/2022 20:31

I used antihistamine cream on my DD, that anthisan stuff.
Then put vaseline over that. Seemed to work.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 26/09/2022 20:36

My dd had recurrent threadworms at this age and the only thing that worked was getting her to drink pineapple juice!! Apparently pineapple is a natural anti wormer, she drank a glass a day for ages and I never saw a worm again 🤷‍♀️

It worked much better than the tablets which only kill the worms not the eggs.

RainbowCat26 · 26/09/2022 20:49

DC3 has just recently had them, took about 3 days after taking the medicine for them to stop complaining of itching.

pimlicoanna · 26/09/2022 21:35

Plus you need to treat twice not once

My daughter suffered with worms and cried with the itching at night sometimes.
Thankfully its been a few years since she last had them but i seem to recall using vaseline like this too.
