DD8 wetting pants - UTI?

woodstocky · 10/09/2022 21:31

I've noticed Dd (8, almost 9) has had frequent wet knickers recently. She came home from school on Friday and I could smell urine and when she got changed her pants were soaked. She was really sore around the tops of her legs, poor thing. She said the teacher didn't let her go to the toilet when she needed to go (which I'm not happy about!).

Earlier I picked up her pyjamas from last night and they were also wet and she said she doesn't remember them being wet when she woke up (they must have been). She's been dry through the night for years and this hasn't been an issue before.

We were abroad on holiday last week and now thinking back her pyjama shorts were wet a couple of times in the morning but she was so exhausted while we were away, I put it down to literally being so tired she didn't wake up in time for the toilet. The bed was dry and clean so I'm not sure if it was that she had accidentally wee'd a bit before getting to the toilet in the morning.

She's not had a temperature or complained about tummy ache at all, but she generally doesn't have much stamina and is always tired. She was so tired while we were away but I put it down to her being her usual self plus the excitement of being on holiday/swimming in the pool all day.

Could this be a UTI? Do I need to take her to the doctors do you think? I'm unsure if they actually treat it any more, but I'd need to get it confirmed wouldn't I? Obviously it's the weekend so I won't be able to get an appointment until Monday. Is there anything I can do in the meantime to help?

Ah I'm so glad you got to see a GP and have a plan of action! Really hope she starts to feel better soon and am so glad it doesn't appear to be T1D! xx

mynameischloe · 12/09/2022 21:04

Hope she starts to feel better soon, OP! You sound like such a lovely Mum.

Sorry to resurrect thread but we still have an issue with dd wetting herself and I've no idea why.

She finished her course of antibiotics on Friday and the result from the sample sent off to the lab came back completely clear. She wet herself on Sunday afternoon while she was out playing and then woke up this morning and had wet the bed too. She said when it happens in the daytime she doesn't know it's going to happen. I have encouraged her to use the toilet regularly and take breaks to think about if she needs a wee while she's playing/busy which she has definitely been doing.

No other symptoms of anything at all, so it's really odd as it's so out of character for her. I googled and it can be a sign of stress (she has a history of anxiety) but she's genuinely been fine the past year or so, and there's been no major life changes recently. She seems happy in herself otherwise.

We've got another GP appointment this morning but I've no idea what they will suggest really!

That must be such a worry. Have you considered diabetes? Or an overactive bladder? Is she drinking more? Does she drink lots of blackcurrant or caffeine drinks (like coke?) Have you looked at the ERIC website www.eric.org.uk

We went back to the GP and she has referred us to paediatrics because she has exhausted all options for what could be causing it. It's been going on for 3 weeks now as it first started while we were away. We did get called back in to test for T1 this afternoon which came back normal thankfully.

She's been drinking a normal amount (juice or water and the very occasional fizzy pop but not caffeinated). And otherwise she's completely well!

Your poor DD, OP.

Another vote for the ERIC website, they have really useful information.

Also I would cut out any fluid other than water.

woodstocky · 20/09/2022 21:06

Yes I've discovered ERIC earlier today after consulting Dr Google for the millionth time! It is great. I will definitely switch to just plain water and see how it goes.

It's just so worrying not knowing what the cause is. Dd doesn't seem bothered by it and is completely open talking about it. She said she's just finding it confusing Sad

How's she getting on, OP?

woodstocky · 22/09/2022 12:59

We've had a few nights of wetting the bed in a row but she was dry this morning. She's been ok through the day and generally well/happy otherwise!

I hate to be the one to say this, but I started to struggle with this when I was being abused as a child. Is this something you’ve considered, as hard as it is to think about? Especially as you mentioned she is an anxious child.

I understand why you'd bring it up. The GP we saw did ask lots of safeguarding questions while we were there on Tuesday and it didn't flag anything up. She's literally at school or with me, and doesn't go anywhere else/with anyone else apart from swimming lessons once a week so I don't have any concerns. I will ask her some more questions though. She's extremely open with me so won't find it weird if I ask her things.

I was told avoid blackcurrant, red fruits, artificial sweetener anything with caffeine etc with dd. Unfortunately nothing has actually worked but she was never consistently dry. Even as an adult she has issues ... dd is autistic though (you wouldn't necessarily realise if you briefly met her though, not severe)

It’s fab that the GP thought to ask this, and you have such an open relationship with her.

Continence issues aside, being able to talk about stuff like that is going to put you in good stead for the future! I’m glad your DD has such a lovely attentive mum.

How about something like absence seizures? Has her behaviour been totally normal? I really hope you get to the bottom of this soon Flowers

woodstocky · 22/09/2022 18:05

@Chattycathydoll thanks so much, I've really tried to be as open as possible as it's not something I had at that age. I forgot to say in my previous post that I'm sorry to hear of what you went through as a child Sad

Yes totally normal otherwise, which is strange. I'm just finding it so odd as there's no explanation at all.

Absense seizure is actually a good suggestion.

Things that would indicate this are her not realising she's wet herself - so suddenly realises she's wet and is confused why.

Is she feeling the urge to go?
Does she feel like she needs to go and isn't making the toilet on time?
Is it a full wee or is she leaking continuously?

I've just asked her and she said she doesn't feel the urge to go, it just happens. And she said it's a 'little bit' not a full wee, but sometimes she's been soaked so I'm not entirely sure.

We've not had any daytime incidents this week which is good but her knickers have been a bit smelly when she takes them off at the end of the day, even though she's been getting washed regularly. So I'm not sure if she's leaking a bit still?

I know she's young but could it be a hormonal imbalance or ovulation?

PrettyUpMyPorch · 22/09/2022 23:57

I still think you need to rule out constipation / fecal loading. Have you managed to speak to someone from ERIC on the phone? They are very helpful

I've looked at their website but didn't realise I could call. I'm always either at work or have dd with me so don't have much time on my own to ring, but will see if I can manage it.

She's definitely doing poos as normal (she's very regular!), but I'll look in to it.

I know it won't solve the underlying issue but maybe you could try some pads for her while waiting to get investigated. Always do some for bladder weakness which are very thin, not like a nappy at all! Might help to give her a bit more confidence for school etc and she could change them regularly.

This is a good idea, thank you!

She was dry again this morning which is good. Hopefully we are turning a corner...

sounds like the teacher refused to let her go to the toilet and ended up wetting herself, rather than a medical issue. Teachers should always let pupils to go to the toilet! Really makes me angry
