Worried about dd

aleC4 · 26/06/2022 22:24

My dd is 15.
For the past few months she has been having on and off bouts of nausea and sickness.
We put it down to her periods as it seemed to time right and she also has terrible cramps.
I took her to the dr 3 weeks ago and she put her on the pill. She then had a stomach bug for 3/4 days where she didn't eat and was throwing up.
She often has no appetite and doesn't really eat much. She has lost a bit of weight but is not skinny and doesn't look worryingly thin.
She is also often lethargic and sometimes falls asleep in the evening.
Since she started taking the pill, since the initial bug, she has been fine.
Last week she started with a pain in her lower back and frequent, painful weeing. I took her to the dr who dipped her wee and gave her antibiotics for a uti. She finished the three day course today.
However today she has had no appetite again and has had very little to eat - a small breakfast, no lunch and a small amount of Sunday dinner. Tonight she started feeling sick again and has just been sick twice.
I don't know what to think.
I feel like I should be doing something but then on the other hand I think it's not anything major. A lot of the time she's absolutely fine.
It's just that she's never been a sickly child and now she seems to feel sick often.
Any advice?

They have to ask permission to do a pregnancy test. So if they haven't asked. It's not been done.

Russell19 · 27/06/2022 08:49

I got the impression of an eating disorder not pregnancy. It's a shame that other posters have pushed you to that and got you both upset

aleC4 · 27/06/2022 12:04

@lolil I don't think it was a strange reaction at all. She feels ashamed, embarrassed, scared, so many emotions.
Seeing her upset made me upset, I think that's normal?
She knows I'm not happy about it but she also knows I'm her mum, I love her and I'll be there to help in any way I can.

My first thoughts was more gastro problems. Your daughters symptoms are the exact symptoms my daughter had when she was 12. She ws eventually diagnosed with ccrohnd disease. I'm not saying that is what your daughter has but being tired, no apitite, being sick etc is a sing of gastro problems.

WhackingPhoenix · 27/06/2022 23:35

Sounds like gastroparesis. You also mention she’s always tired and currently has a UTI, could she be diabetic OP? Gastroparesis and T1DM often occur together.

TheWayoftheLeaf · 27/06/2022 23:45

Could the UTI/antibiotics have been messing with how the pill regulated her? So that's why it's come back after taking those for a bit?

I know some antibiotics can stop the pill from working properly.

TheWayoftheLeaf · 27/06/2022 23:48

And I won't lie it doesn't sound like disordered eating to me. She'd be trying to hide that she was being sick in most ED cases.

ExPatHereForAChat · 27/06/2022 23:54

If the pregnancy test is negative, HCG levels probably wouldn't be high enough to cause any symptoms so I think pregnancy can be ruled out here.

aleC4 · 28/06/2022 06:28

Thanks all for your thoughts.
She was fine all day yesterday, no sickness or nausea, just a bit or lower back pain left over from the uti I think.
She didn't have much appetite but ate a reasonable amount.
I do t think she's diabetic, she hasn't been drinking excessively and isn't more hungry (I've read up on this🤣) but does have a few of the symptoms I guess. I'll keep an eye on it.
If the other symptoms continue we'll have another trip back to the drs and ask them to investigate further.
I'm pretty sure it isn't disordered eating, she comes and tells me every time she's been sick in graphic detail!!

Hi all. We did a follow up test this morning which is a few days after dd would have been due her period and all negative so definitely not pregnant.
I had pretty much ruled it out to be honest as she had been so much better this last week. She needed a second dose of antibiotics to shift the uti but we've had no sickness or nausea, she's been sleeping normally and eating pretty well.

I was constantly feeling sick when I was 15-16 y/o. Nauseous, dizzy, exhausted. My parents never took me to a doctor and it just disappeared after a year or two. I think it can be related to hormonal changes, a lot of things happen to the human body at that age.

About sex, if they took precautions and had safe sex you should be proud of her., don't you think? Just my opinion. 15 is too early, I know. I didn't even have a boyfriend or a wish to date back then but nowadays things are different. Don't make her feel she did something terrible, it's a natural thing.

Hope things get better soon!

aleC4 · 08/07/2022 10:55

I am proud of her for taking precautions, both of them actually.
She knows I'm not thrilled at the idea due to her age but I've told her that if she does it again, which I'm sure she will, just to ensure that she uses the same approach.
They've been together 9 months so it's not a flash in the pan thing that they haven't thought about.

I'm resurrecting this thread in the hope that someone might have had similar concerns about their teens.
Since I originally posted dd has been pretty well and hasn't had any more vomiting.
However she has definitely lost weight, she tried some jeans on today that I bought her when it was the jubilee and they are massive round the waist.
She gets a lot of headaches. Not severe ones but regular. I had out this down to the fact she's dyslexic and also wears glasses and has to concentrate hard at school.
She struggles still with her appetite. She usually eats breakfast now which is a bonus but often struggles to find the appetite for her lunch at school. She's made herself eat it as much as she can because she knows she should. She's hit and miss with her evening meal but has been eating a decent amount most days.
She feels sick, a lot. Most days she has some nausea at some time or other. Not enough to stop her doing things but it's there.
She gets tired easily but then she works hard at school, has a long walk home and does a physical sport 2/3 times a week.
We haven't been to the dr about any of this since she was put on the pill as it hasn't been debilitating but the more I think about the more I'm getting concerned.
There's times you'd look at her and think she's the picture if health - when she's running round a sports field for example but other times she looks so pale.
At the start of September she had another uti which in turn led to a nasty kidney infection. She was in agony and we ended up at urgent care late at night. It took 10 days of anti bs to shift it.
This week she's had the start of symptoms of a uti again. We went to the dr today to make sure we catch it early if that's what it is. Apparently her urine showed a slight infection but nothing prescribed because it may not be needed. They've sent the sample off and if it comes back needing anti bs they'll know exactly which ones to give.
Last time she had a sample dipped when she had the kidney infection it had traces of blood in it.
Today when it was dipped the dr asked if there was diabetes in the family! That through me a bit. There isn't but she didn't follow it up with any concern and I didn't think to ask her why she asked that.
Sorry this turned out really long! I guess I just wondered if anyone had ever been through anything similar?

Also to add she's gone to bed at 7 tonight with what I think is a migraine. She had a horrible headache and white spots in her vision. I get migraines with aura so I'm pretty sure that's what it is. She hasn't had one before. She's had two lots of painkillers and nothing has shifted it although the aura has gone.

Has she been tested for coeliac disease?

aleC4 · 25/10/2022 22:58

No she hasn't, I had begun to wonder about some sort of intolerance though.

OP posts:
aleC4 · 25/10/2022 23:05

She doesn't have diarrhoea though so I'm not sure. I'd always associated that with food intolerances.

OP posts:
Bronzeisthecolour · 25/10/2022 23:18

As pp it could be coeliacs- have a read, it effects everything and everybody differently. But vomiting, Pain, feeling full, head aches and tiredness. Can cause infections in any part of body.
My dd lost appetite, head aches, body aches, ear infections, nausea, tired, pale, constipation, vomiting. 4 years later and no infection or aches and obviously all gastro symptoms sorted.
Sounds autoimmune to me. Ask for coeliac bloods ( ask for gene id too) and go from there.

Bronzeisthecolour · 25/10/2022 23:19

Should add she never had diarrhea once.

Wtfisgoingonnow · 26/10/2022 09:12

And no typical gastro symptoms with coeliac disease here either: migraines, joint pain, fatigue, nausea, fainting.

aleC4 · 26/10/2022 14:26

Thanks for the replies, sounds like it might be worth looking into.
Her migraine has gone this morning but she's still feeling a bit fuzzy.
We went out for some fresh air and I took her for brunch. She ate a good breakfast but is now back laying in her bed because she feels so tired.
It's just not normal for an active 15 year old is it?
I guess perhaps her sleep wasn't the best quality last night but still, she hasn't done much to feel tired.

Tonight I went out with friends and dd went to her hobby that she loves.
I've just got in and she's under a blanket on the sofa.
She said she did it but she felt sick the whole time and her head feels weird.
This could still be the aftermath of the migraine but I'm not sure.
I'd discounted the diabetes thing until talking to the friend I went out with tonight. Her son is type 1 and never had the excessive thirst that is meant to be the main symptom.
It's just made made me worry.
I don't know.
I think maybe I need to get her to the dr and just say - help, thus is what's happening, these are her symptoms, can you go some tests?

I’m so sorry your DD has been poorly for so long. I would get an emergency appointment on Monday morning and explain the significant weight loss and fatigue, they should absolutely do more tests. I wouldn’t leave the surgery without an urgent referral if it was my DD.

BHRK · 26/10/2022 21:37

I would go to the GP and say this has been going on a long time and it’s a time for proper answers. Ask them who you can be referred to so that a diagnosis can be made. Sorry she’s so poorly

MrsHemsworth · 26/10/2022 21:45

Another one here suggesting an initial blood test for coeliac disease. As PPs have said, it really can affect people in different ways. I'm a coeliac and suffer with d&v as a side effect, whereas my colleague experiences more of an allergic reaction with hives etc. Before my friend was diagnosed she suffered from extreme tiredness and headaches. There are so many symptoms.

Good luck, and I hope you and your daughter get some answers soon.
