Worried about dd

aleC4 · 26/06/2022 22:24

My dd is 15.
For the past few months she has been having on and off bouts of nausea and sickness.
We put it down to her periods as it seemed to time right and she also has terrible cramps.
I took her to the dr 3 weeks ago and she put her on the pill. She then had a stomach bug for 3/4 days where she didn't eat and was throwing up.
She often has no appetite and doesn't really eat much. She has lost a bit of weight but is not skinny and doesn't look worryingly thin.
She is also often lethargic and sometimes falls asleep in the evening.
Since she started taking the pill, since the initial bug, she has been fine.
Last week she started with a pain in her lower back and frequent, painful weeing. I took her to the dr who dipped her wee and gave her antibiotics for a uti. She finished the three day course today.
However today she has had no appetite again and has had very little to eat - a small breakfast, no lunch and a small amount of Sunday dinner. Tonight she started feeling sick again and has just been sick twice.
I don't know what to think.
I feel like I should be doing something but then on the other hand I think it's not anything major. A lot of the time she's absolutely fine.
It's just that she's never been a sickly child and now she seems to feel sick often.
Any advice?

Pregnancy test?

Serious suggestion.

Helen1233 · 26/06/2022 22:28

My first thought was pregnancy test.

Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas · 26/06/2022 22:30

Mine too.

Ring the GP to ask about the results of the urine analysis at the lab. Was it a UTI? Does she need more antibiotics?

aleC4 · 26/06/2022 22:43

Jesus Christ she'd better not be pregnant.
She does have a boyfriend but I'm pretty sure they're not sexually active.
We have had many talks about stuff like that so I don't think she's that stupid.
I have to ring the drs midweek to check the results of the urine test, to make sure they had given her the antibiotics.
I'm assuming it would show up in the sample if she was pregnant?
I can't believe I'm even asking that. 😱

They would either have dipped it with a pregnancy detection strip at the time or not. It sounds like in this case they didn’t, as the focus was on UTI symptoms.

The sending-to-the-lab bit is to see if any bacteria grows so that the correct antibiotic can be given for the most appropriate length of time, so that won’t shed any light on the pregnancy situation I’m afraid.

aleC4 · 26/06/2022 22:57

Oh bugger. We're going to have to have that conversation tomorrow aren't we?
The nurse asked her is there any chance you might be pregnant and she didn't bat an eyelid saying no, didn't squirm or look awkward.
I'm going to have to get her on her own without ds around and just ask her straight. She is a bit of a one for keeping things from me sometimes but hopefully I can convey just how serious this is.
I guess I could say I want a pregnancy test doing to be sure and see what her reaction is?

I wouldn't necessarily jump to the conclusion of being pregnant. At that age, I'd suspect disordered eating. Is she telling you she's been sick?

AnotherEmma · 26/06/2022 23:02

Surely the doctor would have insisted on a pregnancy test before prescribing the pill?

All those symptoms you describe are classic early pregnancy symptoms - I can sort of believe that it hasn't occurred to you (you don't want to entertain the possibility) but surely it would - or should - have occurred to at least one the HCPs?!

I would insist on a pregnancy test "to rule it out".

She might have had protected sex but contraception can fail.

lolil · 26/06/2022 23:04

Surely the doctor would have insisted on a pregnancy test before prescribing the pill?

Why would they?

PragmaticWench · 26/06/2022 23:04

I'd also be concerned about kidney issues and would want that ruled out.

lolil · 26/06/2022 23:05

Posted too soon...

I have never had to do a pregnancy test before being given the pill. Neither have any of my friends or family that I have discussed that kind of thing with. None.

Why would they?

I was forced to take a pregnancy test before getting the coil fitted, despite having a 3 month old baby and insisting there was absolute no chance whatsoever that I could be pregnant (I hadn't had sex since the birth).

Having said that I do remember the first time I got the pill, as a teenager (for heavy periods, not for contraception) and they didn't force me to do a pregnancy test.

Still, if a teenage girl has symptoms that could potentially be signs of pregnancy, surely you would ask her to do a test... if it's not standard procedure it should be, seems like common sense to me?!

HappilyHadesBound · 26/06/2022 23:09

Have a look at gastroparesis

Often misdiagnosed in that age group as an eating disorder.

That's not standard procedure either.

Really? I was a bit put out by it, I have to say.

aleC4 · 26/06/2022 23:11

When she was given the pill she was on her period, she's just started that day so the nurse told her to start taking it straight away and to do three months without a break. Then we are to go back and evaluate how things are going.
Yes she's telling me when she feels sick and when she's being sick.
A couple of weeks ago when she had what we thought was a bug it was just bile in the end as she had nothing inside her. She had horrible stomach pains and was sick several times. There was a bug going round school at the time.
This time it was proper sick but no stomach pain, just nausea.
She's been fine with the sickness thing for two weeks now. No signs at all. She's been at school, been out with friends and taken part in her sports hobbies with no problems.

@HappilyHadesBound thanks for offering an alternative in what has suddenly become a scary situation!
I've had a quick Google and those symptoms are very similar to what dd has.
The one I had not really noted down but is very evident is the feeling full very soon after starting to eat. She will literally eat half a meal if you're lucky and then say she's full.
Might be worth looking into that once we've ruled out the P word 😱

aleC4 · 27/06/2022 07:37

Ok so she has had sex 😱
Once, about three weeks ago.
They used a condom and she did t see any problems with it - didn't split, stayed where it should etc.
I feel sick. I've hardly slept and can't eat.
I've had to ring my boss and say I've got a family problem so I'll try and be in work later.
In the meantime I'm off the sainsburys...
Shit.

OP posts:
lolil · 27/06/2022 07:56

It's unlikely to be pregnancy then as she was given the pill 3 weeks ago as a solution, so this has been going on longer than that. Unless she is not telling the truth about that, but if she is able to be open and honest about having sex then I don't see what benefit there would be in pretending she hadn't previously.

aleC4 · 27/06/2022 08:01

I'm wondering if the times before it was just her period and now it could be pregnancy?
It took a lot to get it out of her to be honest, then she just got upset.
She said it was about the tone she started taking the pi but she's also been so I doubt she was protected from that.

OP posts:
lolil · 27/06/2022 08:18

No I didn't mean she would be protected just that the sickness pre dates the sex. It's been going on for months, she has sex 3 weeks ago.

aleC4 · 27/06/2022 08:22

Ok so the test was negative, we've done two.
However she wouldn't have been due on until next Monday so I'm not sure we're out the woods yet.
We've both had a good cry and she's shit scared, embarrassed and ashamed.
She's telling no one at the moment.
I've told her I'll get more tests and she'll need to another one next week.
It's going to be a long week I think.

OP posts:
Chattycathydoll · 27/06/2022 08:35

Please don’t make her feel stupid. Sex is normal, and contraception isn’t 100%. She’s in a presumably loving relationship, admittedly a young one, but that drive is perfectly ordinary at that age, as long as boyfriend is decent (and the same age as her!). She’s not stupid and doesn’t need to be ashamed or embarrassed.

Also ovarian cysts can make you feel very full after eating. Would also explain the issues with her periods and worth while asking for a US scan to check.

Ok I know you are worried about her but you crying and her feeling ashamed is a really odd place to be. Why are you crying? Just be there for her, give her the strong, supportive mum and make sure she knows she does not need to feel embarrassed or ashamed Sad
