Hi All

Not sure if i am over worrying but i am getting increasingly concerned over my newborns head shape. She is 3 weeks old and her forehead seems to be growing bigger.

Thoughts please, does her forehead look normal?

Thanks

Absolutely does not look normal. What has the GP said?

Well, that's a useful comment.

If you're going to say that, perhaps elaborate, and give the OP reasons why you might be qualified to make this judgement?

OP, one of mine had a seriously misshapen head as a result of ventouse and forceps. I worried about it enough to pay a fortune to a cranial osteopath (who made no difference) but he has just graduated from Oxford, so it clearly didn't affect him too badly.

Looks absolutely normal to me, but I’m not a medical professional.
Looking at my babies newborn photos, their heads were oddly shaped. I presume it’s from being squeezed through the birth canal during delivery?

Contact the GP anyway tomorrow for peace of mind.

My DS had a huge forehead as a baby. His head measurement was well above the 99th percentile, but he was a large baby anyway. We were referred to pediatrics, but they found no reason for it. He's now 5 years old and has grown into his large forehead.

Definitely see a GP even if it's just for your own peace of mind. The months between being referred and being seen at the children's hospital was awful for me... I became obsessed and extremely anxious, taking lots of photos everyday just to see if it was getting bigger.

Big hugs Op, as I know how consuming these fears can be, especially as evening approaches which always made it worse for me.

Speak to your health visitor or GP (I’d be more inclined to go for the latter to be honest as if there is any need to refer your baby for further investigations it will need to come from them anyway) and make sure you take your red book so that any head circumferance measurements can be documented and compared.

Babies head shapes do change in the weeks following birth and in the vast majority of cases it will be nothing more sinister than that, but you have a nagging worry and it is very sensible to get a medical opinion by someone who can examine her in person and do all the necessary checks.

I think it looks fine but I'm no expert. I think your HV will be able to put your mind at rest

It's the 4(?) month mark when their head looks like it's broken in half. Oh I couldn't wait for that to pass and join together. DS luckily has lots of hair so it grew back in and covered the 'crack' temporarily. Scary. I didn't know that happened

If you have concerns please ask your HV/GP for a referral, see my earlier post on 8 June last year. My DS was diagnosed with craniosynostosis (shortly after he was born) and this was corrected surgically at GOSH. His head shape was different to your DD's Girl but it is a rare condition and can be missed so for peace of mind, do get it checked over.

Hello. My newborn's head looks same. I'm also worried. Now your baby's head shaped normally? Shape is changed? Please reply

Girl2020 · 09/10/2023 19:02

Hi, head is normal now so don’t worry x

mummaj84 · 05/06/2024 19:30

Our son has a flat head at the back which is worse one side. From the front he is perfectly symmetrical face etc and no developmental issues. However Im concerned about the back of his heading being asymmetrical and bumpy. You can’t really notice it until his hair is wet now as he’s got lovely curly locks!

We were referred to the paediatrician who says it’s nothing to worry about. The NHS don’t advocate helmets and it’s not severe.

He is one now and no longer sleeps on his back and is very active in the day. So not spending time on his back like when he was a smaller baby. It doesn’t seem to be improving at all, which I was hoping for.

I would love to know if it will improve over time or is there anything I should be doing now to help. Anyone been through this?

Hi, I am the OP for this post and I just wanted to provide an update.
My DD is now 2 and her head is now normal. It is still a little flat when her hair is wet but not really noticeable at all.
Hope this helps x
