Hi All

Not sure if i am over worrying but i am getting increasingly concerned over my newborns head shape. She is 3 weeks old and her forehead seems to be growing bigger.

Thoughts please, does her forehead look normal?

Thanks

It looks perfectly normal.
I work on nicu and newborns heads come in all shapes and sizes.

Cocowatermelon · 08/06/2022 20:48

Babies skulls are not one solid piece. That dent behind the forehead is about where one of the fontanelles (soft spot) is. Her head will change shape and size quite rapidly in the next few weeks and months. She’s so young, so if you’re worried, why not try talking to your health visitor or your baby’s doctor.

Moosake · 08/06/2022 20:49

Looks normal to me but I am not an expert. Your health visitor is probably the best point of call if you're at all worried and they can always point you to your GP. Babies heads do change a fair bit.

Cocowatermelon · 08/06/2022 20:52

You could mention it to the health visitor or doctor at her next weighing or vaccine appointment. They won’t mind talking to you about it. Newborns are such strange little creatures when you’ve not had much experience with them. It’s a bit of a learning curve for all first time parents. Her head looks perfectly normal to me btw..

Sponge19 · 08/06/2022 20:55

Absolutely does not look normal. What has the GP said?

Pyjamagame · 08/06/2022 20:59

Get GP to check that out, if nothing but for peace of mind.

Char100300 · 08/06/2022 21:00

I haven’t been to the GP yet as only just noticed it. I am just starting to really panic. Why do you think it looks abnormal?

If you're starting to panic then call the GP tomorrow

AnyFucker · 08/06/2022 21:02

Absolutely does not look normal

can you elaborate ?

Ragwort · 08/06/2022 21:05

Ask for a thorough check up, my DS was born with craniosynostosis (to be honest his head did look very misshapen - not like your DD's) it is quite a rare condition so not always spotted. There is an excellent charity called Headlines who can offer support. My DS had corrective surgery at 6 months and absolutely no side effects- he is 21 now. Feel free to PM me if you like.

Puddlelane123 · 08/06/2022 21:08

Looks perfectly normal to me OP but hard to gauge accurately based on that photo alone - would need to see photos from above. Try not to panic.

legaltigger · 08/06/2022 21:11

It looks normal to me but I would ask HV or GP for reassurance.

Honaloulou · 08/06/2022 21:12

Looks fine to me (but do get it checked if you're worried).

Remember that some people on MN are arseholes who get a kick out of upsetting people - a certain PP might be one of them.

Does this angle help?

Congratulations, she looks adorable even in the half photo - it’s that downy baby hair. Gets me every time 😊

I think her forehead looks normal but you’re the one inspecting every inch of her daily so if you’ve noticed something you’re not happy about get it checked by the HV and if you’re still not reassured go to the GP. It’s been a few years but I generally found HCP’s happy to take concerns about babies and young children seriously on parents say so because it can be so difficult to pin down symptoms with the tiniest ones.

Don’t let yourself sit there worrying about it - get her checked.

Justkeepon · 08/06/2022 21:17

Absolutely normal, in fact I think it's a great shape, my youngest son had a very long forehead/long back of head and his head is perfectly normal now! Middle sons head was flat on one side and almost required a special helmet but eventually fixed itself and helmet wasn't needed.

sjxoxo · 08/06/2022 21:19

Looks normal to me! I think baby’s heads are quite varied in shape & size. Ask your HV if you’re worried though x

Moosake · 08/06/2022 21:22

Just looked at a picture of my DC's head when they were that tiny. It looks similar. That isn't to say you shouldn't get it checked out. Obviously you see your baby every day.

Fleur405 · 08/06/2022 21:23

It looks absolutely fine to me - babies’ heads really do change shape a lot in the first few weeks (especially if they got very squished during birth). You know your baby best though - speak to your HV and/or GP at the 6 week check if you’re at all worried.

Our friends had a baby with this too. His head was kind of bullet shaped. It was very worrying for them but was diagnosed and he had successful surgery. Completely normal shaped head now.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 08/06/2022 21:24

What bit are you concerned about? Looks fine to me but talk to your HV to put your mind at rest.

Grotbag81 · 08/06/2022 21:25

My DS was born with a huge cone shaped head. There was nothing medically wrong. The nurses at weigh in suggested some therapy that involved clamping him down when he was a toddler, which would of been traumatic for any active toddler.

I said his head is the shape it is and will even out, now he's 14 and the lump on one side is barely visible. I used to encourage him to sleep on the lump side to flatten it out.

I have South Asian friends who massage their babies head into shape from birth with oil and place little saucers under a small thin pillow. However I felt the saucer would of made it more pronounced. I did do the massage.

Its her forehead that i am worried about it just seems to be growing quite large?

Thank you everyone for your reassurance. I will contact my HV tomorrow to be on the safe side.

Their heads are massive when they're little, then the sort of even out all over as they get older
