Molluscum

My son has had molluscum for over 18 months (apparently this is common in kids but I’d never heard of it!). For most of that time he had a cluster on his neck and another behind his knee, these have now cleared. But he’s now coming out in them all over the place- arms, chest, legs, face, even one on his scrotum that thankfully cleared quickly. He ended up with antibiotics for cellulitis from one on his arm. The dr says there’s nothing that can be done and we have to wait it out but they just keep cropping up. Is there anything I can do to help him clear them more quickly? I’ve seen mollenol advertised but it’s expensive and can’t seem to find the science behind it- I’ll spend the money if it’s got a chance of working but don’t want to be ripped off. I’m open to herbal/ alternative treatments too but not homeopathy. Thanks

DD started getting cellulitis from hers as they were on the way out, it seemed that caused her body to notice them and then fight then off.

So, I’d give it a couple of months and if then there’s no change start looking at treatment, but for now honestly sounds like DS may be managing them on his own.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 05/06/2022 16:32

Ds had them for nearly a year, then they got more irritated and I was about to take him to he GP when they suddenly disappeared.

TeddyBeans · 05/06/2022 16:38

DS had them last year. I put molludab or something like that on them but I wouldn't recommend it, it stung like mad and he would scream when I was applying it. He got hand foot and mouth which kicked his immune system into all systems go and cleared both at the same time

Oblomov22 · 05/06/2022 16:38

Many GP's are dismissive. I'd used molludab, picked off a head, and although it stings, it then prompts the body to fight it itself, which it hasn't done before.

peachescariad · 05/06/2022 16:48

All my 3 had it when very young, took about 18 months to go but I found sudocream worked very well.
Unfortunately, DS2 has some scar pits under his arm from them. Horrible things but they will go.

BelleTheBananas · 05/06/2022 16:50

Molludab works well. Both DCs’ molluscum disappeared within days.

YingMei · 05/06/2022 16:54

Mine both had this when they were 5, under the arm and down their side. A few days of molludab fixed it for both of them.

Thanks all! Encouraging to hear others have eventually fought them off. I’ll check out molludab.

The newer ones do seem to come and go more quickly than his original ones. Maybe that’s a good sign? There are so many though…

I used colloidal silver spray and it cleared my dd's up. This was about 10 yrs ago.

terriblyangryattimes · 05/06/2022 17:13

My son's went on their own, eventually. He had them for almost 2 years, mostly on the backs of his knees, the creases at the top of his legs etc. The doctor gave us an ointment for when they were itchy (which seemed to be when they were on the way out) but they did go on their own.

SweepTheHalls · 05/06/2022 17:14

It's random, but daily baths witha couple of drops of lavender oil finally got rid of them for us!

Etotheipiplus1equals0 · 06/06/2022 00:43

I think I have some lavender oil- worth a try! Will look at colloidal silver too. Thanks

Another vote for molludab. My son had terrible molluscum for months and months. We got moludab and it cleared it up within weeks :)! (It's a bit painful but my son was ok with it)

SmiledWtherisingsun · 08/06/2022 22:17

I found dipping the end of a q tip in a tiny bit of t-tree oil & dabbing it on the blisters night helped dry them out.
Nothing else made any difference.
It does go.

Ihaveaskedyouthrice · 08/06/2022 22:22

My daughter had a very bad case of them and after about 6 months we tried thuja cream from the health store. It did sting a little but was bearable and got rid of them within a few weeks.

crosbystillsandmash · 08/06/2022 22:24

Sudocrem!!
My dd had them and a very wise mum at school recommended this and it worked!

mamalovebird · 08/06/2022 22:33

Another vote for tea tree oil. A few dabs from a cotton wool just before bed. pad Cleared it up in a few weeks.

feelingprettylight · 08/06/2022 22:35

Another vote for sudocrem. Mine had one on the upper arm and I smothered it day and night and eventually it went. I was relentless, used to put some one multiple times a day.

feelingprettylight · 08/06/2022 22:35

The internet says good quality apple cider vinegar with the 'mother'.

FrazzledFirefly · 08/06/2022 22:43

My son had them for over a year. Mainly just one arm and torso. After many, many months I was advised to find the biggest (the Queen), break the skin and remove the debris. It bleeds a lot but it did cause them all to clear. Horrible, horrible things :-(

Cheerfulcharlie · 08/06/2022 22:44

High dose vitamin C tablets daily for 3 weeks - worked for my son who’s had it for over a year with nothing else shifting them. It did take until 2.5 weeks of the vit c before they started disappearing then within a few days they were completely gone. Miracle!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 08/06/2022 22:49

My DD fell and ripped off her "mother". They were all gone in a couple of days.

With my youngest it took me a few attempts to get her "mother" in a similar way (she would scream when they were touched) but I got at it eventually and again cleared in days... this is apparently not a preferred method though.

Lupyto · 08/06/2022 22:50

Both my kids cleared up after using molludab. I didn’t want to use it as it’s pretty harsh stuff, burns the skin around the spot if you get it wrong. But after 18 months I thought we better try it
