Headlice! 🤢 Hairdressers?

Mol1628 · 26/05/2022 21:39

Found some on my 9yo son.

I found quite a lot of nits and only one adult. Hoping I caught it early there didn’t seem to be different sizes etc so hopefully just the first batch of eggs.

He’s had them before four times so I regularly comb to check. Are some people more prone than others? His brother hasn’t had them (yet)

He also has a hair cut booked for Tuesday. I’ve combed and pulled as much out as I could find and done a treatment too. If I condition and comb every day from now till his hair appointment is it still ok for him to go?

I would as them but probably not.

womaninatightspot · 26/05/2022 21:48

If you’ve done the treatment and combed then I’d go. Was it two stage treatment? I use Hedrin once which kills all the eggs too.

Experiment627 · 26/05/2022 21:50

Headlice are resistant to the chemical treatments, the combing method is the only treatment that actually works.

Lice cannot fly or jump.

Finalcountdowntoourtripaway · 26/05/2022 21:51

My previous lass cut dd's hair complete with nits.. She didn't care at all!!

Mol1628 · 26/05/2022 21:51

that’s what it was the Hedrin once shampoo but I did the conditioner and comb with nitty gritty as well just to be sure I had got them all.

You need to get the nitty gritty nit free comb. It removes eggs and lice. Lifetime guarantee with the comb also. If it ever gets damaged just post-it to them and they will return a new one to you. I got ours in boots

I'd always thought this but apparently new y treatments smother the eggs/lice rather than bombing them with toxins, so you can't technically become resistant to them. At least, that's what the Hedrin box said, and I so desperately want to believe it. 😂

PaddingtonBearStareAgain · 26/05/2022 21:54

Speak to the hairdresser and see what they say. Some may still do it others not.

Mol1628 · 26/05/2022 21:54

Yes I have the proper nitty gritty comb.

And yep the stuff I used is the type that suffocates them not poisons them apparently!

You’re right I’ll just have to phone and be honest and see what they say.

It’s fine. You’ve nuked them, comb every day between now and Tuesday too.

if I was a hairdresser I’d like to cut your DS on Tuesday, sounds much less likely to have them than many others!

CHiSOCG · 26/05/2022 21:59

Gosh yeah you should have got rid of them by then for sure!!

MarmiteCoriander · 26/05/2022 22:04

I agree with phoning the salon to check.

I had an elderly patient once with a head injury needing sutures. She had a lots of dried blood throughout her hair and I offered to clean it up for her. She said 'that's alright luv, the hair dresser will do that' Shock

Mol1628 · 28/05/2022 09:53

Thanks everyone I’ll just call and check.

Does anyone know if the lice repellant shampoos are worth it? He does seem very prone to getting them for some reason!

As its half term and he's a boy cant you just shave his head?

I still have ours and ds is 21😂

toomuchlaundry · 28/05/2022 09:57

I’ve had to do the walk of shame when not realising DS had nits and hairdresser refused (quite rightly) not to cut his hair

SheWoreYellow · 28/05/2022 10:00

Hedrin Once should have done it. I’d just check before you go.

danni0509 · 28/05/2022 10:04

I would just take him.

If you used a treatment and comb it every day between now and then I doubt there will be anything left in his hair anyway.

Poppetlove · 28/05/2022 10:04

No, I don’t think you should go to the hairdressers with head lice.

Mxflamingnoravera · 28/05/2022 10:11

I found the alcohol based hand sanitisers are fab at dissolving the glue that sticks the egg cases to the hair, try putting sanitiser in his hair and then combing with the nitty gritty comb. Dip it in water between combings you'll get way more out than you could believe. I wept when I saw what came off my son when he was a child. No amount of conditioner will shift the stubborn little buggers.

I found that once I started washing DDs hair with vosene she never got them again. Can't be certain it wasn't a coincidence with her getting older but someone told me lice can't stand the smell

Mol1628 · 28/05/2022 10:12

Thanks. I already got them out I was just wondering what everyone would do about his hair appointment :)

Yes it’s the vosene one I was looking at I might give it a go. After Half term he will probably go back to school and get them again 🙄

I just want to add that using a hairdryer was what finally stopped my DDs infestation that (most embarrassingly) went on for years and years regardless of treatments (pesticide and other) knitty grittys etc. i was in complete despair.

So may I suggest you use the dryer on his hair and see if that keeps them at bay.

One time we were at hairdressers and they found a louse whilst combing through and refused to continue. Had to do the walk of shame.
