Sugar in urine or not?

greyskies1 · 11/04/2022 16:07

My DD is 12. She hasn't been feeling well with a sore throat and stomach ache for three days. I took her to the GP today who diagnosed tonsillitis. Whilst there we gave him a urine sample as requested. He said no infection but would send off anyway. When I got home I tested her urine using the strips we have at home as she is constantly going to the toilet so I assumed UTI too. Whilst it came up no infection it did however show glucose if I'm reading it right. Should I be concerned by this or not. Thanks in advance :)

Sugar in urine or not?

Yes you need to go back to the gp.

Glucose in the urine is usually a sign of diabetes and or kidney dysfunction

Aimee1987 · 11/04/2022 16:11

The image came up after I posted. It looks like trace rather then actual levels. I'm assuming do did a dip stick of the urine so if there was glucose present they would investigated further

Thank you for replying. Is it okay just to wait and see what the results are from the GO sending it off do you think x

Yeah wait for the gp to get back with the results

nocoolnamesleft · 11/04/2022 16:23

The GP may not dipstick, but send off to the lab, where they look for cells and organisms but not glucose. Ring them.

My friend thought her daughter had a UTI and took her to the doctor - dip test showed glucose in urine and sent her straight to A&E where she got diognosed with diebeties.

I hope it's not but it's imperative you check this out asap.

LostInTheColonies · 11/04/2022 21:29

Also took DD to GP with what I thought was a UTI - dip stick showed glucose in her urine, so the GP did a blood test then & there & diagnosed T1 diabetes. Straight to the hospital. Thought it was a UTI as she'd wet the bed (she was nearly 9) and afterwards discovered that she'd been displaying classic symptoms but I had no idea. Thirst, tired, eating huge amounts, lost weight, very cranky.

If it is diabetes, you want to get on to it as soon as possible - it can be very, very serious if not early.

LostInTheColonies · 11/04/2022 21:30

FFS if not CAUGHT early!

Thank you for the advice I have called 111 and am waiting for a call back. I wasn't too sure whether I should be worried as it only shows a trace of glucose but I am now anxious that even a trace is something to be concerned about xx

I often have sugar in my wee and I've had extensive tests to check for diabetes/insulin issues. I don't have anything wrong with me, apparently it's just one of those things.

Just telling you this to reassure you that it doesn't necessarily always mean diabetes.

Thank you. She has never had it before and has been going to the bathroom a lot and also eating a lot. But not any more thirsty than usual. Hopefully 111 will call me back and I can ask them to check her blood sugar levels for peace of mind xx

Definitely get it checked out. If it reassures you when my dc was diagnosed T1 I dipped the urine at home as the GP wouldn't do it on a weekend 🤨and it went to the furthest end of the scale (dark brown) and we caught it very early. She's only displayed about 2 days of extreme thirst.

I will definitely get it checked out. 111 have said it's a 8 hour call back. I will recheck her urine too in the morning. Thank you 😊 Hope you're little one is okay too xx

I've dip sticked hundreds of tests in my years. Firstly- are the strips in date and have they been stored with the lid on? So no moisture can get in?
I'd do a 2nd check with a fresh urine sample and see what that shows. Let us know how it goes.

MarmiteCoriander · 11/04/2022 22:43

Sorry- just read that you were already planning on testing it again!

The strips were opened a couple of weeks ago as I suffer with UTIs which is why I initially brought them and definitely no moisture in them. I only dipped DDs urine today as she was going to the toilet so often and it was frustrating her. Will recheck in the morning and see what it comes back with. Thank you 😊 xx

The GP obviously dipped it as they said no infection, so would likely have noticed if there was glucose as they use similar strips.
That's just a trace not a lot, so I would not panic too much tonight, just follow up with the GP tomorrow if you're worried. Different strips give different readings, if yours or theirs are old or damp then one may be wrong.

I know it's just a trace which is why I posted to ask advice if I should be worried or not. I dipped two separate samples from my DD and both times had the same trace of glucose which is why I was a bit worried. I will retest again tomorrow and see what it comes up with saying and maybe contact the GP and see what they think. I'm not doubting the GP wouldn't have checked it properly but he dipped it and checked it in about 5 seconds. So maybe it could have possibly been missed or it was there and it's actually just a trace so nothing to be too worried about. (I'm hoping) thank you though😊 xx

I forgot to check you aren't using an old jam jar to collect the urine? I had someone once with a sky high reading- which was dark brown on your type of stick. Turns out that she'd collected a sample at home- in a jam jar, and simply poured it into the sterile sample pot I'd given her to use for a fresh sample!

No we have the sterile syringes from the GP (the ones that suck the urine up) as I say I'm Not overly concerned as it is just a trace but I was abit worried with her constant toilet trips which is why I initially checked at all. Xx
