Chickenpox tips

yaboreme · 01/04/2022 13:46

My ds currently has chickenpox.

He's so uncomfortable and clearly tired but can't fall asleep - wants his dummy but they are in his mouth poor thing.

Has anyone got/ used any remedies to help relieve little ones? I'm cautious that he isn't drinking a lot and want him to try and rest.

Also he's been sick? Is this common for chickenpox I can't see anything on the nhs website.

Thanks

Fill tights with porridge oats and let it soak in the bath. The other oaty water is soothing

HoldenCaulfieldismyhomeboy · 01/04/2022 23:47

I definitely second the oats in bath. They definitely helped ease the itching for my son. My eldest felt very sick for about 4 days, but didn't actually vomit.

yaboreme · 02/04/2022 21:24

Thanks.

Oaty baths all round.

Get some Virasoothe. My twins were covered in spots and they don’t have one scar between them. The Virasoothe keeps the spots moist and is like a cooling gel. It’s magic stuff.

doodlejump1980 · 02/04/2022 21:29

Oh and remember DO NOT to use ibuprofen for chickenpox. It can make the spots go horribly deep.

CharlieSays13 · 02/04/2022 21:30

Oaty baths do help but a foam from the pharmacy was a game changer. It was called Poxalin or something similar, totally took my child's itch away.

Is he old enough for ice lollies?

User12310 · 02/04/2022 21:35

Poxclin was good. We also used piriton for the itching (the syrup). We often had a few Epsom salt baths each day too.

Largebutnotincharge · 03/04/2022 07:29

My little one is on day three with more and more appearing! I've done an oat bath and have calamine lotion but it doesnt seem to be doing much. Still has a fever too. Cant wait for him to be back to his normal comfortable self!

anniewaits1 · 03/04/2022 07:33

Another vote for Poxclin mousse. It's not cheap but works wonders in soothing the itching and preventing infection or scarring. My eldest got it 2 weeks after his brother and was covered on every inch of his body (and also vomited) and the mousse was only thing that really helped - along with regular piriton syrup.

Largebutnotincharge · 03/04/2022 08:31

I'll give the mousse a go! How long was it until your little ones were feeling better? I just keep seeing more and more spots!

yaboreme · 03/04/2022 08:37

My son is on day 4 and more spots this morning? I'm not sure what to expect as he's my only one. I thought they would have stopped appearing? The first ones are scabbing over but fresh ones coming every day.

He's a bit up and down mood wise, been using virasoothe but think I'll give the mousse a go, see if that helps.

Thanks for the tip on ibuprofen.

Hi OP. My little one is the same. His on day three but theres been sooooo many news spots today and he is so uncomfortable. Hope it passes soon for your little one.

NowNowDermot · 03/04/2022 20:22

Don't know personally whether it works but I keep reading bathing in Head & Shoulders Classic Clean (has to be that particular type) works wonders with chicken pox. My DD hasn't had it yet so no opportunity to try it out but I guess it can't hurt even if it doesn't help! It comes up on google if you search so must be something in it, hope you find something that works for DS from what's been suggested anyway Flowers

KaptainKaveman · 03/04/2022 20:27

My dd is much older now but she had CP when she was about 8 and was literally engulfed from top to toe....eyelids, groin, everywhere . We used calamine lotion which helped.

yaboreme · 03/04/2022 20:43

Thanks everyone.

I've been using virasoothe and also oat baths (used Aveeno sachets, mixed into a little paste and covered his chest and back - made it into a game!).

Hope everyone else's little ones are getting on ok, it's so hard when they are poorly, especially for when little can be done to help. Just the classic 'ride it out' which I'm not good at.

Fingers crossed no more spots tomorrow (for everyone).

Sending hugs 💐

My six month old was horrendous with it. Oat baths are good as above. I used virasoothe and poxcillin mousse but tbh old fashioned chamomile lotion seemed to provide the most relief.

rach2713 · 03/04/2022 21:09

My 3 daughters had chicken pox a few months back and one thing that worked was head and shoulders shampoo. I put it in the bath like bubble bath and it helped amazingly and they didn't itch..

yaboreme · 03/04/2022 21:16

@rach2713 ah someone else mentioned head and shoulders. I wonder how it works....

I'll Google it

LakeFlyPie · 03/04/2022 21:17

I didn't find the oaty bath water helped at all, best thing was Poxclin mousse

rach2713 · 03/04/2022 21:23

It dried there spots up and took the itch out and it left no marks on them. I just put it in the bath like you would put bubble bath in and let them play..

Largebutnotincharge · 05/04/2022 07:34

Hi OP

Hows your little one getting on now?

flower277 · 07/04/2022 16:40

My DS has started with chicken pox today. Been to the 3 pharmacies in my town and no Poxclin mousse to be found 😣 he’s not complaining of itching yet but wanted to be prepared, I bought virasoothe instead.

Largebutnotincharge · 07/04/2022 17:06

@flower277

I tried the head and shoulders shampoo as bubble bath as mentioned in this thread and it was brilliant.

Silverclocks · 07/04/2022 17:11

Bicarb in the bath really seemed to help my two sleep
