Hi everyone , dd has a temperature that has occurred overnight last night. she has had calpol throughout the day. She is 22 months , her cheeks are flushed and she’s complaining of ear pain. She doesn’t have a cough but is very rattly on her chest and it’s full of mucus. She has been unusually clingy yesterday and not as active, she generally wants to just sit or lie down. She’s hardly eaten and won’t drink. We have done lateral flow tests on her and she is negative . Her ear temperature is now 39.6. Anyone know what could be causing this. I will be taking her to the walk in center in the morning .

Thanks in advance

You need to get a PCR for a high temperature not a lateral flow.

M2AL · 26/12/2021 19:54

@RedSnailim booking one now, just wondering if these symptoms such as sore ears were linked to anything else. Or if anyone had experienced similar. She has one bright red cheek but she hasn’t got any teeth coming through that I know of, sore ears and a temperature .
Thank you x

Ear infection
Chest infection
Any complaints about her throat?

My DS has had a bad chest and was giving an inhaler and it's worked great

M2AL · 26/12/2021 19:58

@SleighbellsZ she’s hardly eaten today, or drank so maybe she does have a sore throat. Temperature won’t come down with calpol x

Try neurofen for the temp. Much better at reducing a fever. You need a pcr test result before going to the drs, or at least you must pre warn them at the walk in centre so they can isolate you. Please don't just go in.

LincolnshireLassInLondon · 26/12/2021 20:31

This sounds stressful for you, OP. Definitely get it checked out in the morning. Do you happen to be in South East London? We were at an urgent care centre on Christmas Eve with DC (20 months) with very similar symptoms. They said there's a nasty virus going around the nurseries and pre schools in the area.

LincolnshireLassInLondon · 26/12/2021 20:35

Also as PP said, best to call ahead before going in as your DD has a temperature. We'd done a PCR on DS but hadn't had the results back (have since - negative) and didn't think we could wait any longer for help so we called 111 and they booked us an appointment at a specific urgent care centre where they had an isolation booth.

itsacovidxmasone · 26/12/2021 20:39

Would be calling 111 for medical advice now given her temp. Hope she feels better soon x

Fallagain · 26/12/2021 20:41

Could be teething pain or ear infection. Like PP she needs a PCR. Everyone who has a temperature should be getting a PCR when they first develop a temperature.

Is she weeing? If not she needs to be seen. Is she drinking anything at all? Try offering ice lollies or squirt 5 ml of water or milk into the back of her check every 10 mins.

Covidclaire · 26/12/2021 20:41

DC2 just coming to the tail end of 8 days of high temperatures. Negative PCR. No other obvious concerns but doctor prescribed antibiotics over a phone appointment (this was pre PCR result) just in case so as not to lose a few more days.

As others said you can’t just go to a walk in centre without a PCR.

Fallagain · 26/12/2021 20:43

It could be parvovirus

The NHS advice says she should be seen

M2AL · 26/12/2021 20:59

She’s booked in for a pcr first thing. I will attempt at ringing my doctors however they aren’t the best with appointments. I’m just concerned over her temperature if it doesn’t go down x

Hi OP,

With a temp that high and no drinking I'd be concerned about dehydration. Could be many things, a virus, an ear infection, tonsillitis. I'd be wanting her checked over I think, I'd call 111.

DS2 who is 2.5 has just got over something similar following temps of 40 degrees, vomiting, cough, feeling generally rubbish. Negative PCR. Ended up needing antibiotics.

Don't delay seeking medical attention in order to get the PCR results, they will still see her if she needs to be seen. I hope she gets better soon.

MajorCarolDanvers · 26/12/2021 21:48

If she has a sore ear she probably has an infection and will need antibiotics. I would seek medical attention.

EbonanzaScrooge · 26/12/2021 21:50

Give her ice cream or ice poles. As much fluid as you can, is she still having wet nappies as normal?

M2AL · 26/12/2021 22:11

Thankyou everyone , currently trying to get through to 111 now x

Good luck! It does sound like an ear infection. One of my two had them a lot at that age.

McFarts · 26/12/2021 22:27

Give her ibuprofen to help bring her temp down (as well as calpol, alternate them every 6 hours) it also works better for ear ache than calpol.

arcof · 26/12/2021 22:33

Sounds like ear infection, and if so, antibiotics will be needed so get her seen asap tomorrow

Spottybluepyjamas · 26/12/2021 22:47

Give her nurofen while you wait to get through - that works much better than calpol! You can give it at the same time as calpol as well.

SleighbellsZ · 27/12/2021 10:23

Any news op

M2AL · 27/12/2021 11:16

Couldn’t get through to 111, phoned the walk-in center who said they were happy to see her . She’s got tonsillitis , an ear infection and a chest infection. Also waiting on pcr results .

SleighbellsZ · 27/12/2021 11:49

Omg all at once the poor thing!!
Take it she has antibiotics?

Sunshinegirl82 · 27/12/2021 11:58

I'm glad she was seen OP, does she have antibiotics? DS turned a corner after about 36 hours of antibiotics so hopefully she'll be feeling better soon.

Just as an aside I think this is a really good example of why you can't always wait for PCR results before seeking medical attention, especially with children (not saying you would have OP but just a general comment).

My GP told me they've been really concerned about children turning up at hospital much more unwell than they usually would be because people are assuming it's covid and/or waiting for test results. If you're worried then call is my view with children, parents know when their child isn't right.

StarsandStones · 27/12/2021 12:03

I know she is young... but try ice cream... better for the throat...

Vanilla ice cream has fat (and sugars). You can also blitz some yoghurt with fruits and freeze this yourself. Or (diluted) fruit juice.

All the best!
