Weird rash on child’s arm

My 9 year old DD had what I thought was an odd small bruise on her shoulder that I first noticed yesterday morning. it’s gradually got bigger since then (see photo) and looks like a purple/dark red rash. Skin is smooth to touch, doesn’t hurt or itch. No visible sign of a bite and she does not recall banging it. I did the glass test and rash does not disappear. Does this look like a cause for concern? No fever, but a bit more tired than usual and did have a sickly headache yesterday evening….
111 advised about an hour ago to get it checked out at A&E which is where she is now with DH but it’s a very long wait and just looking for
some reassurance in the meantime that I’m freaking out unnecessarily and that it’s probably nothing to worry about…

You would think with it being a child they would be seen quicker, no news is good news :)

blahblahblah321 · 16/08/2021 22:23

Hope she gets seen quickly x

Kittii · 16/08/2021 22:38

Sorry I don't have any medical knowledge of this but having been scared witless by my DC's health over the years I know how you're feeling. Hope she gets seen soon and they can reassure you.

SonOfABench · 16/08/2021 22:41

thanks everyone. I’m going through a period of anxiety at the moment so struggling to distinguish between that and knowing if it is something to be genuinely concerned about. now feeling guilty about her being kept up til all hours but wouldn’t forgive myself if it turned out not to be nothing….

LemonPepperOrder · 16/08/2021 22:45

Don’t feel guilty you’re a good mama who has done the right thing, hope everything is okay x

nocoolnamesleft · 16/08/2021 22:47

Odd. Never seen one quite like that. Not been doing any unusual sporting activity? The closest I've seen to that is the bruising you can see on the front of the thighs when short children have been wearing laser quest armour, leaping around, and it has been rubbing over a period of time. You're right to get it checked out.

Panda8383 · 16/08/2021 23:45

You’ve defo done the right thing and nothing to feel guilty about x

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 16/08/2021 23:53

Hope it's nothing sinister, quite odd isn't it? I was expecting to say it's excema/ chicken pox/ heat rash/ allergy . Try not to worry, you'll know soon enough and it's good she's being checked out.

puffylovett · 16/08/2021 23:57

Sending a hand hold! Weird things can be so scary.
The last time I saw a bruise like this, my partner fell weirdly on his knee at the dry ski slope. It wasn’t particularly painful, but they said he had in effect separated his tissues when he slid and the bruising was under the surface of the skin or some such. It was a while ago now so I can’t fully remember but I recall it took an absolute age to go. Hope it’s nothing serious.

Kittii · 17/08/2021 05:21

Any update OP?

minmooch · 17/08/2021 05:27

How is your daughter op? Hopefully all ok.

Thebestcat · 17/08/2021 06:23

My dd had a similar looking bruise caused by sucking her own shoulder as a habit/comfort thing when she was tired. She was not much younger than op’s dd. Obviously needs to be checked out medically but just offering a possible benign explanation.

Mumdiva99 · 17/08/2021 06:31

@thebestcat my youngest has 3 marks this week where he's done that exact thing. Eldest also went through a phase of doing it. But you'd think OP daughter would say if it was self inflicted before a 4 hour wait in A&E.....

lannistunut · 17/08/2021 06:36

How did she get on in A&E? You definitely did the right thing getting that checked. I twice had to take mine for a funny rash, the doctors always said better to check.

Yes I agree with that. In my dd’s case though, when she started sucking her arm she did it in private so I saw the bruise first which was unexplained for a few days. Then noticed her sucking the shoulder in the bath a while later. She was a bit embarrassed and fortunately the habit didn’t continue for very long.

I hope you get to the bottom of it op and that your dd is okay.

beckypv · 17/08/2021 13:56

@SonOfABench how is your daughter? I hope they have been able to give you help/advice

SonOfABench · 17/08/2021 14:05

Sorry for the delay in updating everyone. my 3
month old has kept me busy all morning. After being at the hospital until 3.45 this morning, and after a whole range of blood tests, they were still quite stumped. The blood tests all came back clear thankfully, and she is very perky today considering the late night, so think we just have to put it down to one of those medical
mysteries! Really appreciate the supportive posts and everyone keeping me calm. Thanks all.

Goodness-that looks nasty! Is it any bigger now?

Marmitemarinaded · 17/08/2021 14:49

Has the hospital actually put it down to a medical mystery?

Not in so many words, they seem to think it is bruising/broken blood vessels under the skin and made worse by her possibly rubbing it…they are happy there are no underlying issues causing it. Was certainly a strange one.
