Is there a nasty virus going around that's not covid?

My granddaughter started coughing with moderately high temperature 2 weeks ago, she had a negative test, since then her mum has had a cough and feeling horrible. At my dgd's nursery there have been a number of her friends all coming down with the same thing and having negative results, is it possible that these are all false negatives or that it's some other virus doing the rounds?

I think there is. We've all had it and lots of others I know have had it.

Coughing, high temp, lethargic and snot, snot, snot!!

MorvaanReed · 05/07/2021 09:53

There's something moving through the school I work for, all negative test results, lots of children off and today a staff member who is never sick, so it must be bad. Some children have been left with horrible, persistent coughs.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 05/07/2021 09:58

There's always been nasty bugs going round, there were before covid and nothing has changed.

Kaylasmum49 · 05/07/2021 10:03

Thanks for the replies.

It does seem that there are a lot of things going around but I was concerned as I have read a lot about false negative pcr tests. I have had contact with my dd over the last few days and have a mild sore throat. I am going to book a pcr to be on the safe side.

Lots of nasty viruses, colds and as previous poster has stated an abundance of snot!!!

Think it's always been the same with nursery/ school but the little ones that have spent most of their lives in lockdown are getting hit hard now people are moving around again....

We have all had pcr test after pcr test....seems extreme but it's really better to be safe than sorry.

Wh2mval · 05/07/2021 10:44

Im currently at home on annual leave with a virus. I wouldn’t describe it as flu, but very ill. I haven’t left the bed for about 3 days. 😴😴😢😢 probably just a bad cold.

IwillrunIwillfly · 05/07/2021 10:50

As a pp said, there's always hundreds of viruses going around! In particular, we're seeing a higher number than normal for summer of RSV just now.

Branleuse · 05/07/2021 10:50

its probably a cold

Bati · 05/07/2021 10:52

What tests are people using, if its the 30 minute tests then they are very unreliable so you people need to do a pcr test to know for sure if it's covid or not.

Also not everyone is flue like symptoms with covid, some people have sickness and diarrhea, some more like a cold and some severe flu etc. It's different for every one.

Hope you feel better soon x

Apparently all the usual respiratory things that they didn't get during lockdown are now merrily spreading at the rate of knots with the primary schools back. The toddler has been a snot machine since May.

And the pollen counts have been sky high so even people who've never had hayfever are getting hammered with it on top.

LindaEllen · 05/07/2021 11:09

Of course there are other viruses going round. There always are! I imagine we will be in for a rough winter this year though if there's no distancing, as people won't have immunity to other bugs etc after the year of distancing.

minipie · 05/07/2021 11:16

I have read that common winter bugs are surfacing now as they didn’t have a chance in winter (not sure if this actually makes sense from a scientific perspective…)

DD had a high temperature and very tired on Friday, dodgy tummy all weekend. Negative PCR.

kirinm · 05/07/2021 11:16

Was in hospital with by DD last week twice - once due to seizure caused by spiking temp and two days later due to her breathing. Upper respiratory tract viral infections doing the rounds and I guess kids just aren't used to being exposed to these at the moment. Paeds consultant said they are seeing a lot of kids getting two or three viruses in short succession. This one is dragging on and we successfully managed to pass it to lots of other people. I have been unwell with it for about 5 days now - constant temp and cough. Negative covid tests.

DeclineandFall · 05/07/2021 11:18

Covid is presenting as a cold with snot and sneezing. Always did but particularly in the young who don't get it so seriously. LF tests aren't picking a lot of theses cases up as they are borderline asymptomatic and the tests are a bit shit . A PCR will be needed. This is how we presented with covid last year along with anosmia and a bit of gastric issues. The whole cough, fever advice thing thing was always a bit of an issue as far as some doctors/scientists were concerned as it didn't include those who had it mildly and who spread it without knowing.

Kaylasmum49 · 05/07/2021 11:39

My granddaughter had a negative pcr, as I mentioned in my first post.

This is an international site, are you asking if there is a virus going around the world?
How would anyone know if there is a virus prevalent where you are?

Ifitquacks · 05/07/2021 11:44

Yes, plenty of them.

Treehaus · 05/07/2021 11:45

Some nurseries have been advised to close here as staff and children were off in such big numbers with them- apparently it's a delightful mix of loads of the usual winter viruses etc that didn't spread as much during lockdown.

Kaylasmum49 · 05/07/2021 15:43

claralara42 I was asking in general if anyone anywhere had come down with a virus and it not be covid, I don't see an issue with that.

Of course people are coming down with viruses that aren’t Covid, why wouldn’t they be? The usual winter viruses didn’t happen in anywhere near the normal numbers due to lockdown. We’re making up for it now.
claralara42 · 05/07/2021 15:54

It's meaningless, if that is your question, but that wasn't your question.

Of course someone somewhere has come down with a virus and it not be covid.

MaverickDanger · 05/07/2021 15:57

RSV is going round in pockets of the South West and North West.

We had it recently, nurseries have been warning against it & I know a number of children that have been hospitalised.

MyMabel · 05/07/2021 15:57

Yes. My DD18 months was sent home from nursery when I thought she was just being a bit clingy. She was sick in the evening and went in and out of consciousness, wouldn’t eat or drink anything. We rang and ambulance and they took her temp at 39.2, we spoon fed her water, have her calpol and her temp came down to 38.5. Told of she didn’t have a wet nappy over 6 hours to take her to a&e. Was a very scared time and she took a good week to get back to her normal self, broke my heart that she wouldn’t play or smile. Just led watching telly while I worked without a peep.

The GP called after a few days and said there was a nasty virus about.

Kaylasmum49 · 05/07/2021 16:07

So for everyone that's had this other virus was covid ruled out? As I mentioned my granddaughter had a negative test as did a number of children at her nursery.

There have been lots of dc off at my children's school over the past 2 weeks with bad colds. All pcrs negative. Before that it was a sickness bug . All 4 of us caught that
