Is there a nasty virus going around that's not covid?

My granddaughter started coughing with moderately high temperature 2 weeks ago, she had a negative test, since then her mum has had a cough and feeling horrible. At my dgd's nursery there have been a number of her friends all coming down with the same thing and having negative results, is it possible that these are all false negatives or that it's some other virus doing the rounds?

Yep. I had that 3 weeks ago. Not Covid. Felt like shit.

So for everyone that's had this other virus was covid ruled out? As I mentioned my granddaughter had a negative test as did a number of children at her nursery.
Ds was hospitalised with it (he has viral induced asthma so even a tame cold affects him a lot), and his test for covid at home and in hospital was negative.

Yep. There's something like this moving through DD school, quite a few of her friends have been off and DD2 who has just turned 1 had it quite badly at the end of last week. She looks fine now, no temp or cough, but still isnt quite herself.

My cousins baby has had something similar and was hospitalised as temp went over 40 degrees. All have had negative covid tests.

Yes, there is something that's like covid but not covid going round - there's also a vomiting bug.

I’ve a horrendous cough, painful sinuses, snotty, no taste/smell and generally feeling crap for 5 days now. 2 negative lateral flows and a negative PCR which I was convinced would be positive! I’m going to continue isolating until it clears up as I’d hate to pass it on and also wonder about false negatives.

Yes of course. That’s how we know it was something other than Covid. Negative Covid tests.
Welliesandpyjamas · 05/07/2021 16:27

Yes, most of the kids in my DH's class got it. He got it bad. I got it bad. Our DC got lighter versions.

It's a heavy, exhausting snotty cold with a persistent cough. And according to tests, not Covid.

My husband was almost bed bound for 6 days, breathlessness, fever, fatigue, had a negative pcr and was sent for a heart check and bloods as he was so unwell, he is getting better now but was told it must just be a virus as all tests were clear.

I saw in the news a few weeks ago, a lot of winter bugs are coming to the surface now.
During winter nobody was mixing so less chance for bugs to spread, now lockdown is easing and more mixing is happening(especially with kids) viruses are being spread.
Son was ill a few weeks ago, then me and then his nan. Sharing is caring and all that.

SpringRainbow · 05/07/2021 16:58

One of my children has typical cold symptoms and the other has a really nasty cough and sore throat. Both have had PCRs and both are negative.

Husband and I also aren’t feeling great with sore throats and an occasional cough, we also took PCRs and they both came back negative as well.

I’m not surprised to hear bugs and viruses are doing the rounds to be honest.

Shock horror there are bugs other than covid. We’ve been ill with colds/temps/lack of smell & taste. No covid. DDs friends across five nurseries all have had something similar and all tested negative. I know so many people ill at the moment and not one of them has covid.

Sssloou · 05/07/2021 17:23

@Kaylasmum49

My granddaughter had a negative pcr, as I mentioned in my first post.
You didn’t specify which test was done.

My neighbour had symptoms did x3 LF tests - all negative - then did PCR which has come back positive been single vaccinated.

My DDs school are all out with COVID or colds. She has had same symptoms for a week. Again LF all negative. We are going to go for a PCR now.

Her school friends all home isolating - no symptoms but one of the Mums (double vaccinated) now tested positive.

Whole year groups out.

There are several nasty viruses going around at the moment.

Makes me think that the masks and sanitation routines were actually doing something.

SuperMonkeys · 05/07/2021 17:41

Yup, I've had it. Miserable

kirinm · 05/07/2021 19:14

My daughter was hospitalised and tested negative for covid in hospital. It is a nasty virus though.
