Toddler with chalazion on eye (picture)

DS is 2 next month. Since November he’s had a lump under his eye which has gradually grown. The lump started underneath his skin in his eye bag, now looks like this! It’s on the surface of his skin now but it still looks and feels like there is still a mass under his skin. He’s had doctors appointments and they gave antibiotics, which I think was to stop me pestering them more than anything, but they didn’t make a difference. They’ve said they won’t refer him to hospital because there’s nothing they can do, we just have to wait until it disappears. It is definitely still growing and hasn’t bothered him until now. Now he keeps blinking and rubbing it because it feels like there’s something in his eye, bless him :( has anyone else’s children had this and how long did it take to disappear?

Hi OP
Have you spoken to an optician? Might be worth getting some advice from them. My mum started with one of these in late November and she's still got hers - they can take a while to go.

RainbowWorrier123 · 25/02/2021 14:46

I've had one for almost a year now. In the autumn, after much pestering I finally got an appointment to have it drained. Unfortunately it is still there only a bit smaller. Apparently the only way to really get rid of them is warm compresses several times per day, though I can imagine that might be a challenge with a toddler! And it hasn't worked for me anyway. So I'm sorry that this isn't very helpful, but just wanted to say that you probably aren't being fobbed off, there really isn't much that can be done about these. However I agree with PP that it would be well worth consulting an optician. I keep meaning to do that myself actually.

DailyCandy · 25/02/2021 16:02

I would make an appointment with an ophthalmologist. I don't think the compresses or antibiotics work that much (for adults). I had one removed some time ago as did DH. The removal involved lancing out the clogged oil gland. Mine never returned, nor did DH's.

underneaththeash · 25/02/2021 17:49

OP I can't see it well enough to say if it definitely is a chalazion. Once they've gone to the hard stage then hot compresses don't really work, you need to get them before that.

Is the swollen lid now covering some of the pupil at times (when the pupil is larger)? If it is, it definitely needs referring as it can affect vision development.

Moonshine160 · 25/02/2021 18:17

Thanks for all your comments. No fortunately I don’t think it blocks his pupil but the fact it is getting bigger is scaring me. He’s had three GP appointments now but they’ve only been telephone appointments, they won’t physically see him and I’ve sent photos each time but the problem is it seems to look different on each photo I take! He has another appointment tomorrow and I’m hoping they will refer him.
I’ve attached another photo from today.
The swelling is very hard so I presume that’s why the hot compresses aren’t working :(

Hi OP - I nagged mum to go to the optician as it was affecting her sight. The lump was pressing on her eye and affecting her vision.

Violinmum1 · 25/02/2021 18:38

My DS had a chalazion on his upper eyelid when he was a toddler. Warm compresses three to four times a day worked eventually. It was a hard lump at first, but after about three months of the compresses it finally began shrinking.

unmarkedbythat · 25/02/2021 18:44

I had a chalazion removed a few years ago, is the reason they won't do that covid or age?
Definitely warm compresses. I found they really reduced the discomfort even if they didn't actually get rid of it in the end.

happysunr1se · 25/02/2021 18:49

Have they ruled out an haemangioma? Aka strawberry birthmark/ veinous malformation.

My dd has one which developed after birth. It looked just like that at first and hers was a very aggressive one so it grew rapidly. The nicu staff didn't know it was an haemangioma they thought it was a graze or allergy. My dd was only referred for treatment as a more knowledgeable paediatric Dr happened to be visiting.

Treatment was propranolol to begin with.

Ask the Dr.
If it is an haemangioma propranolol can stop it in its tracks and reverse it, if received early enough.

NerdyBird · 25/02/2021 20:43

My dd had something similar. It only went after I accidentally burst it when I was prodding to see if it was hard or soft. Before that we'd been told it would eventually go but she had it for over year before it burst. I would try and get someone to see it in person.

underneaththeash · 26/02/2021 21:02

OP did you get anywhere with the gp today?
I'm still slightly worried about the ulcerated area on top (that round very red bit) - how long has it been there?
I'm also worried that it may cause visual problems as it's been there so long.

Moonshine160 · 26/02/2021 22:18

@underneaththeash hi. Fourth time lucky. We’ve had a telephone appointment today with a doctor and apparently their lead doctor has reviewed all the photos and decided that they now need to see him urgently and he’s got an appointment to be physically seen on Monday morning! Now I’m really panicking about it in case it’s serious. They have said they will probably just refer him to an ophthalmologist at the hospital but there might be quite a wait? And in the meantime it’s growing bigger.
The ulcerated area has been there about two weeks now. That appeared after he had a course of antibiotics (the last doctor said it was infected when it wasn’t). Not sure if that’s a coincidence or not though.

underneaththeash · 26/02/2021 22:59

That’s good. It probably is nothing serious, but someone needs to have a proper look and it probably needs to be removed.

Snowymcsnowsony · 26/02/2021 23:21

No idea but just wanted to say your dc is absolutely gorgeous!!

Moonshine160 · 27/02/2021 12:12

@underneaththeash thank you for your advice - do you think they would remove it? The first GP we spoke to said they would if it didn’t disappear but the second GP said they wouldn’t remove it due to his age.
@Snowymcsnowsony thanks, that’s lovely of you :)

DailyCandy · 27/02/2021 12:55

Really pleased you got an appointment - do push for resolution, don’t get fobbed off. If they sound in any way reluctant just stand firm. Insist on a referral to the ophthalmologist. Best of luck

Inthedarkx · 05/03/2021 18:52

My daughter had one at the same age but on her eye lid at the top on her right eye. She got it looked at by the eye specialists at the hospital and was on a waiting list to have it removed but by time she actually got round to even getting it done it just disappeared!! It was there for 2 years! I'll try find a pic and post it

Moonshine160 · 05/03/2021 19:52

@Inthedarkx crikey - thats a long time! The doctor saw him on Monday and he has been referred to hospital but I’m not sure when we will hear anything from them. I really hope it’s not too long because it’s starting to bother him a lot. It keeps getting large scabs on the top of it and he’s constantly rubbing his eyes and blinking hard.

Soontobeseller · 05/03/2021 19:57

Your little boy is absolutely adorable!!!

I had a recurring one for months last year and was getting so fed up with them telling me to do warm compresses bit in the end it did work. With a bit of pressure it burst. What a moment! It hasn’t been back since.

Poor boyo Sad

Hope it gets sorted soon.

Moonshine160 · 30/04/2021 18:14

Hi again. So he was referred to hospital at the beginning of March but we haven’t even had an appointment through yet because he’s not classed as urgent. He still has the cyst but it burst about 3 weeks ago and clear fluid came out of it. As you can see from the photo the hard swelling under his skin has nearly disappeared but the ulcerated top/scab is showing no signs of disappearing. Will this go eventually? Any ideas on how to get rid of it? He keeps referring to it as his ‘poorly eye’, bless him.

@Moonshine160 may I know how long it took to come to this stage , my ds is having same problem and it’s been already 2 months since it started. Could you also tell me the remedies that you followed for it to burst out ?

I would am keen to know the same.
My daughter has a huge chalazion lower lid. It's a cause of huge anxiety for me. 6 weeks in now and getting bigger.

Purpleraindrop · 20/03/2023 10:14

Just an update after waiting 5 months we no longer see the little bump oh his eye lid. It got reduced on its own.

Dee1985 · 20/03/2023 13:41

My daughter's current look like this. Were they similar at all? Really hoping they fade
